STANDISH, Maine – The 2025 Saint Joseph’s College men’s soccer schedule has been announced. With 16 regular-season tilts on the docket, the Royal Blue will open the campaign at home on Friday, August 29th, with a 4:00 PM match-up against NEWMAC foe Wheaton College and conclude the regular season with a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest at Elms College on October 29th.
Led by seventh-year Head Coach Will Pike ’11, the Monks are slated to play 12 GNAC games and four non-conference match-ups this fall. In addition to the opener versus Wheaton, Saint Joseph’s will face all three of Maine’s NESCAC programs—Bates (Sep. 3), Colby (Sep. 16), and Bowdoin (Sep. 23)—in a challenging non-conference slate.
Saint Joseph’s begins GNAC play on Saturday, September 6th, with a 2:00 PM game at Rivier University and, following the September 23rd tilt at Bowdoin, will close the regular season with nine consecutive conference contests.
The 2025 GNAC Tournament begins with quarterfinal action on November 1st and continues with the semifinal and championship rounds on November 4th and 8th, respectively. The tournament champion earns the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Tournament, which begins on November 15th.
In 2024, the Monks finished with an 8-8-3 overall record and a 7-5-2 mark in GNAC play. As the #5 seed in the GNAC Tournament, Saint Joseph’s traveled to #4 Emmanuel College for a quarterfinal match up on November 2nd. After a 1-1 draw through 110 minutes of regulation and overtime, the Monks were eliminated in penalty kicks—marking the program’s first first-round exit since 2015.
Games to Watch:
August 29 vs. Wheaton College – Saint Joseph’s opens the season with a new-look roster and hopes of avenging a 5-1 loss to the Lyons last fall in Norton, Mass. The Monks are 0-5-1 all-time against Wheaton.
September 13 at University of Saint Joseph – The Monks face the reigning GNAC Champion in their second conference match of the season. The Blue Jays defeated SJC 3-1 last year in Standish.
October 25 vs. Emmanuel College – Saint Joseph’s seeks redemption following a 2024 GNAC Tournament exit at the hands of the Saints. The contest is the first of four consecutive home games in a 10-day span to close the regular season.

Christina Formella, the soccer coach and special education teacher who later claimed she’s was being accused of sexually assaulting an underage student because she is “good-looking,” is now claiming she’s the victim of misogynistic “sexist scrutiny” and complained about being portrayed as a “predator.”
“It’s a spectacle — a public ritual that punishes women not for what they’ve done, but for how they’re perceived,” a rep for Formella’s family said in an exclusive statement to the New York Post on Thursday (July 3).
“When men face accusations, we discuss evidence and procedure. When women face accusations, we attack their character, their choices, and their worth as human beings,” the rep added. “This isn’t justice — it’s gender-based persecution disguised as accountability.”
Formella, who had previously worked at Downers Grove South High School in a Chicago suburb, is now facing a total 55 charges including aggravated sexual assault, aggravated criminal sex abuse and grooming, which could carry up to 60 years in prison if convicted. The teacher, who was allowed to walk free with an ankle monitor, is accused of grooming the boy when he was 14 and engaging in about 50 “sexual acts”, including having sex with the boy five times at her home during school hours and at least 45 incidents at the school where she worked as a special education teacher, according to prosecutors.
The relationship reportedly began in January 2023 and ended in September 2024, however, Formella allegedly contacted the boy even earlier when he was 14 years old. The former college soccer player reportedly brought up her future husband, Michael Formella, a former college baseball player, multiple times in texts to the boy sent in September 2023.
The couple was married last summer and prosecutors claim Michael was unaware of his wife’s alleged affair until her arrest in March. Christina initially appeared in court on March 17 and denied the sexual assault allegations, which were reported to have taken place two years earlier, claiming “everybody comes after her because she is good-looking and she is just a good person who cared too much about [the victim],” according to court documents obtained by WGN9.
The teacher and student allegedly exchanged text messages professing love for each other and talking explicitly about sex they had in a classroom, which was found by the teen’s mother on his iCloud account.
“I love you sooooo much baby… Even though this morning was short, it was perfect,” Formella, who was 28 at the time, allegedly wrote to the boy.
Formella claims the boy, who was 15 at the time, got possession of her phone and sent himself explicit messages as part of a blackmail scheme. The boy’s mother initially reported inappropriate sexual contact with her son’s soccer coach and tutor to the Downers Grove Police Department on March 15.

Madelyn Desiano, current professional soccer player and member of UCLA’s 2022 Women’s NCAA Division I national championship soccer team, is celebrating the release of her new book — Bend Never Break: The inside story of UCLA Women’s Soccer and their inspiring National Championship journey.
The book tells the inside story of the Bruins’ path to the top of college soccer through the trust and resilience they built in each other throughout the season. Bend Never Break is available to purchase on Amazon.
Desiano’s career at UCLA was worth a story in itself. She had back-to-back ACL tears during her freshman and sophomore years with the club and had yet another surgery in 2020. After making a full recovery, she was able to take the field again in 2021 when the Bruins won the Pac-12 title. Finally, as their starting right back in 2022, she helped lead UCLA to a national championship.
During the championship season, Desiano scored 11 points off three goals and five assists, starting in 23 of the 25 games she played in. Despite a journey worth a book in itself, she felt compelled to write about a team she’ll never forget.
“My mom was actually the one who suggested I write our story,” Desiano told UCLA Bruins on SI. “I knew just on a personal level, with my injuries and adversity, I could write a compelling and inspiring story. But then adding our incredible team and everything we went through, I knew the book would be really really special.”
The writing process may have been just as tedious as her journey back to the field, what with pulling all the information she could find to spark even the faintest memories of that season. Over two years she spoke to various teammates and coaches and scrambled to find any picture, news entry or video possible. She drew inspiration from a legendary Bruins coach to find a theme and help her cultivate the perfect story.
“I knew I wanted to incorporate Coach Wooden in it,” she said. “So i used each block of the pyramid of success to help tell our story. That was a fun process deciding which story or player coincided to each block.
“It wasn’t super difficult! The second part are what I considered mini essays, where the first part is a bit more story-telling and thematic messaging. The hardest part was the last two months; finishing editing and then doing the promoting/marketing. I think I will most remember just re-watching our games or looking at old pictures. That’s how I remembered a lot of moments. Memories flooded back and I was able to write with such detail.”
Since raising the title trophy with UCLA, Desiano has enjoyed a professional career, playing for the Houston Dash and OB Q, a Danish women’s team.
Her journey, admittedly, has been treacherous, but it’s nothing compared to the struggles she had to endure early in her Bruins tenure. In fact, she finds solace in the little things along the way.
“It’s been filled with many ups and downs but I’ve had such a blast moving around the world, traveling, playing internationally, and meeting new friends,” Desiano said of her professional career thus far. “I got to live in a new country and experience playing European football, which has always been a dream of mine.”
Asked about what she took from her time with the 2022 squad that’s helped her along her way, she admitted that there probably won’t ever be another expereince like it.
“Nothing will ever compare to our 2022 team,” she said. “I think having that experience is knowing that no one can ever take that away from us. The talent, trust, and joy is something I will never forget.”

WARREN OH- Howland High School standout Ava Boothe is gearing up for another shot at a national title with the SVA soccer team, sharing her excitement and insights during a recent Player Profile on YSN.
Boothe, who helped her team secure a championship two years ago, is now preparing for the elevated challenge of competing in a higher bracket at this year’s nationals in Denver. “Hopefully we win it again and hopefully, like, the teams are scared of us,” Boothe said, underscoring both the confidence and humility she and her teammates are carrying into the tournament. Preparation for Denver’s challenging altitude hasn’t been taken lightly. Boothe explained how the team has been training with masks to simulate the thinner air, an effort that paid off in previous trips. “When we went down last time, a lot of players threw up like on the other team because they didn’t train or anything. But we didn’t throw up or anything,” she said with a laugh.
Beyond the pitch, Boothe highlighted the importance of camaraderie and team bonding, recalling team hikes and whitewater rafting trips as memorable off-the-field experiences. The senior also spoke highly of her relationship with Coach Greg, who coaches her at both SVA and Howland. “Me and him are like real tight. So we have a really good relationship,” Boothe said. Looking ahead, Boothe is considering several college offers, hoping to balance her soccer ambitions with studies in business, marketing, and possibly sports management. She stressed the importance of finding a college where she feels comfortable and supported, readying herself for both academic and athletic success. As the SVA squad heads to Denver, Boothe’s blend of determination, preparation, and appreciation for her teammates and coaches sets the stage for another promising run at the national crown.
