The Wayzata girls soccer team won the program’s eighth state championship last fall.

It was the Trojans’ first state title since 2012.

Wayzata is hoping it won’t take another 12 years before their next state championship win, but they will have a young group in 2025.

The Trojans only return seven players from last year’s team and have eleven sophomores on their roster this season.

Key returning players include goalkeeper Sophia Alvarez, defender Carolyn Voss, and forwards Lauren Craig and Alex Vellieux.

The Trojans will kick off their season at home against Rogers on Saturday.

Akron Garfield vs Southeast OHSAA high school football score, updates

PALMYRA TWP. — Kemp Boyd’s passionate postgame talk included a striking statement.Past Garfield football teams wouldn’t have overcome the adversity this one did, the longtime coach said after the Golden Rams prevailed 21-19 at Southeast Aug. 21.”I’ve had some good teams, but this team is a special group,” Boyd said. “The amount of resiliency they showed was huge, and I think some teams that I’ve had in the past, like when we didn’t get a call or something happened, we just lost our composure. Like we didn’t know how to bounce back when adversity hit, but these young men have been bouncing back, not only all their lives but since December for us.”

The Golden Rams (1-0) bounced back all night.

They rallied from a demoralizing opening drive in which the Pirates (0-1) churned 80 yards on 11 plays for a quick touchdown. They withstood the storm after a Maverick Wood 86-yard kickoff return to the house left Garfield trailing 12-7 at the half. They overcame a sea of penalties (16 for 130 yards) that put their leads in peril.

How did the Golden Rams do it?

They kept charging forward, led by Sheldon Corley as the impressive sophomore ran for 153 yards on just 17 carries. That included an absurd drive to start the second half in which Corley ran the ball eight times for 78 yards to put Garfield ahead for good at 15-12.

Sheldon Corley (5) of the Akron Garfield Rams drives up field on a run play against Southeast, Aug. 21, 2025, at Southeast High School, in Palmyra Township, Ohio.

Still, it was never easy, even after junior Khamari Brady added insurance with a six-yard TD run that put the Golden Rams up two scores.

A fumble gave Southeast a chance, and Wood, a junior, capitalized with a counter for a 37-yard touchdown to draw within two points (21-19).

The Pirates got the ball back with 3:20 remaining and a chance to win the game, but the Golden Rams’ defense held strong, including stuffing a counter to turn second and six at the Southeast 48 into third and 18 at the 36.

The Pirates worked their way back to the 50, but no farther as they turned it over on downs and the Golden Rams secured their fifth straight opening win.

Patrick Youel, head coach of the Southeast Pirates varsity football team, left, chats with Kemp Boyd, head coach of Akron Garfield football, during pregame drills, Aug. 21, 2025, at Southeast High School, in Palmyra Township, Ohio.

Garfield plays counter well

The Golden Rams totally stuff that counter and now it’s third and 18 for the Pirates from their own 36 with 42.4 seconds left.

Garfield leads 21-19.

Southeast still alive

Bizarre game with endless twists.

On third and 17 from his own three-yard line, Southeast quarterback Joe Sharish barrels right for a gain of 21 and a first down.

Now second and five from the Pirates’ 29, down 21-19, with 1:35 remaining.

Big third down coming

Huge tackle by Landon Durstine on Sheldon Corley to set up a Garfield third and 13 from the Southeast 48. There is 3:38 left. Golden Rams lead 21-19.

Southeast’s Maverick Wood pulls his team within two

Up nine, Garfield did the one thing it couldn’t do, fumble, and Southeast pounced. The Pirates’ offense, largely stifled over the past two quarters, quickly handed the ball to Maverick Wood for a 37-yard counter TD run.

It’s Garfield 21-19 with 6:57 left.

Garfield capitalizes on third Southeast turnover

The Pirates turn it over for the third time — two fumbles and a pick — and the Golden Rams take advantage on two Khamari Brady runs. The first, for 17 yards, got Garfield in the red zone. The second, for six yards, got the Golden Rams in the end zone. Nice sidle right by Brady to shake the only tackler with a chance.

It’s 21-12 Garfield with 9:23 remaining.

Scary moment for Garfield

The Pirates had a promising drive, pushing past midfield thanks to a 25-yard completion from Joe Sharish to Maverick Wood. A fumble ended the possession.

Now it’s Garfield in Southeast territory. A promising drive but Golden Rams QB Darius Sales is down with an apparent leg injury.

It’s 15-12 Garfield with the Golden Rams on the Pirates’ 45 and 39.5 seconds left in the third.

Garfield starts second half with dominant drive

The Pirates started the game with a dominant opening drive. Now it’s the Golden Rams’ turn. They barrel their way down the field. Ten plays for 78 yards. Sheldon Corley continues to be unstoppable with 78 rushing yards just on that drive. He adds the conversion run, too. Why not?

It’s 15-12 Garfield with 5:25 left in the third.

Halftime stat glance

Something striking at the half. After its 11-play opening drive, Southeast has run just five plays since. That’s due largely to a kickoff return for a touchdown (a good thing to wipe out a potential drive) and a fumble on the second play of another possession (a bad thing).

The Pirates have 16 carries for 75 yards at half and have yet to attempt a pass.

Golden Rams QB Darius Sales is 5 of 10 for 73 yards. Jordan Spaulding has 57 of those yards on two catches. Sheldon Corley has been hard to tackle with seven carries for 69 yards.

Both teams can’t punch it in late in the half as Southeast maintains lead

A lot of points left on the board late in the first half as the Pirates hold their 12-7 lead.

Garfield got to the Southeast 17 on a pretty impressive two-minute drive but a holding call ends up dooming the drive. The Pirates got to the Golden Rams’ 24 on the drive prior.

Missed opportunities for both sides as Southeast leads 12-7 at the half.

Maverick Wood puts Southeast back on top

The Golden Rams’ first lead didn’t last long as senior Maverick Wood fielded that kick at the Southeast 14, bounced off a hit around the 25 and sped toward the right sideline en route to an 86-yard kickoff return to the house.

What a bounce-back from Wood after his fumble helped lead to Garfield’s first score.

It’s 12-7 Pirates with 8:43 left in the half.

Garfield capitalizes on fumble to take the lead

Well, the Golden Rams take full advantage of the Pirates fumble. On third and seven, Sheldon Corley pushes the pile to get just past the marker. A couple of plays later and Corley has the perfect seam for a 22-yard TD run.

It’s 7-6 Garfield with 9:05 left in the first half.

Garfield takes momentum into the quarter break

The Pirates had all the momentum until a fumble in the final minute of the first quarter. The Golden Rams took over at the Southeast 47. One play later, they’re at the 36 after a punishing 11-yard run by Sheldon Corley.

It’s 6-0 Pirates at the break.

Strong opening drive for Southeast

The Pirates couldn’t have asked for a better start. An authoritative 11-play, 80-yard drive down the field in which they faced just two third downs. They are certainly using quarterback Joe Sharish more as a runner early. The senior has four carries for 44 yards already. Landon Durstine punched it in from the one.

It’s 6-0 Pirates with 5:23 left in the first quarter.

Garfield-Southeast kickoff is here

It’s 69 degrees and almost autumn-like here at Freedom Field. The Golden Rams will kick off to the Pirates to start this game.

Tale of the tape between Akron Garfield and Southeast football

School 2024 record Last postseason berth
Garfield 4-6 2020
Southeast 3-7 2023
A quick guide to Garfield-Southeast football.
  • The Golden Rams went 1-4 in nonleague play last year, with their lone win coming against the Pirates. On the other hand, they went 3-2 in the City Series.
  • The Pirates hope to snap a four-game losing streak at Freedom Field. Granted, a number of those losses came against top foes like Crestview and Garrettsville Garfield.

Meet the Garfield Golden Rams football team

Garfield’s Ziiyahn Blair and Brima Barry celebrate after a goal-line defensive stand to clinch a win over Southeast on Aug. 24, 2024.

The Golden Rams were solid defensively last season. In addition to holding the Pirates to 13 points, they held every opponent but Revere to 28 points or fewer. That should be the backbone once again for Garfield with safety Zilyahn Blair, defensive tackle Corey Williams and defensive end Jamir Jenkins all notable forces on the defensive side. Starpower aside, Garfield is a tad green with just five returning players with any starting experience. Watch for Blair to additionally wreak havoc on offense as a star wide receiver.

Meet the Southeast Pirates football team

The Pirates are looking to bounce back from last year’s 3-7 finish, their worst win-loss record since 2015. They’ll have to do so without last year’s leading runner, Bryer Pickana, but they do return dual-threat quarterback, Joe Sharish, who looks to be greatly improved in his second season starting under center. He should be helped with versatile weapons surrounding him like Alaunte Massrock, Nathanel Rivera and Maverick Wood. Southeast should be particularly strong up front as they return a number of starting linemen.

Southeast quarterback Joe Sharish scrambles from the pocket as Garfield defensive lineman Corey Williams puts on the pressure, Aug. 24, 2024.
