Blaney has victory in his rearview, confidence in his tank – Speedway Digest
Admittedly, Ryan Blaney considered his victory at Nashville Superspeedway Sunday night almost as much a sigh of relief as it was a rush of celebration. Admittedly, Ryan Blaney considered his victory at Nashville Superspeedway Sunday night almost as much a sigh of relief as it was a rush of celebration. The 2023 NASCAR Cup Series champion has led races and been ranked among the top-10 in the championship points standings all season only to have strange circumstances and just plain bad luck derail his chance at a trophy hoist.
He’s had five DNFs through the opening 14 races – including three consecutively in March. It’s double the number of any other competitor in the top-15 in the points standings. No one has more in the series.
At Homestead-Miami Speedway, Blaney led 124 of the first 207 laps – more than half the race – when his No. 12 Team Penske Ford suffered an engine problem and he had to retire. At Talladega, Ala. and Charlotte he was collected in a crash not of his own doing.
Yet, he’s had top-five finishes – TOP-FIVE FINISHES – in all but two of the nine other races that he was able to finish. Sunday night at the 1.33-mile Nashville Superspeedway he was finally given the karmic-green flag to make good on the good effort he gave.
And it all bodes well for Blaney and Team Penske as the NASCAR Cup Series moves to Michigan International Speedway for Sunday’s Firekeeper’s Casino 400 (2 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).
“It means a lot because it’s just been pretty rocky this year and had a lot of misfortune and a lot of down times, just crappy things happening to us, and it’s like, man, what do we got to do to just finish these races or close one out and just kind of things go our way,” Blaney said Sunday night.
“So, I think that was more — it’s kind of like, I don’t want to say relief, but just like, okay, finally nothing crazy happened and we were able to just run our own race and bring the speed and execute and do our job very, very well.
“It was nice to finally get in Victory Lane tonight after a rocky start to the year.”
Blaney’s work was obviously a personal triumph – marking his eighth season with at least one win in NASCAR’s big leagues – but it also boldly reminded the field that the reigning NASCAR Cup Series championship Penske organization is on top of things. Again.
The storied team has won the last three NASCAR Cup Series titles with Logano in 2022, Blaney in 2023 and Logano scoring his third in 2024.
And now with the regular season just halfway complete, all three Penske drivers, Blaney, Logano (Texas) and Austin Cindric (Talladega, Ala.) already have victories and therefore Playoff berths – as does Penske’s affiliated team, Wood Brothers Racing with driver Josh Berry (Las Vegas). No other multi-car team has qualified its entire lineup yet.
“I’ve been really proud of Team Penske and the Wood Brothers speed this year so far through the first dozen races,” Blaney said. “For the last couple years, we’ve struggled a little bit kind of getting going before the summer months, and I think we’ve figured it out come the fall and things like that or late summer.
“But I thought we just fired off this year with tons of speed, and was really proud of their efforts over the winter for that and carrying over what we accomplished at the end of last year and bringing it bigger and better at the start of this year.
“So, it’s great to have everybody with a win and everybody locked in there, and hopefully we can just continue to rack it up. It’s nice that we have all the speed and all the teams are working very well together right now. Between myself and the 22, 2, 21, we’re all really in sync right now, and that’s tough to get when all four teams are really communicating great and we’re all playing off each other. That’s a really great thing that we have going on at our race shop.”
The encouraging news for Blaney is that the next races on tap have been good venues for the 31-year old. This week the series moves to the Michigan two-miler, where Blaney won in 2021. The following week the sport holds its first international points-paying event on the famed Autodromo Hermanos Rodriquez road course in Mexico City, Mexico. And Blaney has positive history at road course debuts, winning the first race at the Charlotte ROVAL in 2018.
The sport returns to the U.S. the following week for its annual stop at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway, where Blaney earned his career first victory in 2017.
“Michigan is kind of a unique place, but I feel really good about how our kind of mile-and-a-half program has been this year,” Blaney said. “It’s bigger than a mile-and-a-half, but a lot of the same tendencies as some of the mile-and-a-halves that we go to. So, I’m curious to see where we’re going to be at next weekend. The run that we had at Pocono last year was definitely good, getting to Victory Lane there. So, you just hope to keep building off those things. It definitely makes me look forward to next week.
“I always try to look forward to the next week, no matter if we win the race or run 35th,” Blaney continued. “I always try to close the book Monday morning and move on to next week and look forward to having a shot at winning, running well.
“I think it bodes well. Like I said earlier, I think our speed is really good, and that is kind of across short tracks and speedways and mile-and-a-halfs and two miles. So hopefully we can have a good run — big weekend next weekend for Ford and RP [team owner Roger Penske] being in their backyard.”

Kyle Larson will look to get back into the winner’s circle when he takes part in Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway. Larson has had a lot of success at Sonoma and won last year’s event as well as in 2021. He placed eighth at the 2023 race. Larson already has three wins on the season and 12 top-10 finishes in 2025.
Larson is at +600 to win the race, while Shane van Gisbergen is the +140 odds-on favorite. Other contenders include Michael McDowell (+1000), Chase Elliott (+1200) and Tyler Reddick (+1400) in the latest 2025 Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway odds, from DrafKings Sportsbook. Sunday’s race is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. ET. Before making any 2025 Toyota/Save Mart 350 picks or NASCAR at Sonoma predictions, you need to see what NASCAR insider Steven Taranto has to say.
Taranto, who moonlights as a sim racer and has 20 career wins in iRacing, is the lead NASCAR writer for CBSSports.com. He has an annual NASCAR media credential and also publishes a popular weekly NASCAR predictions column, famously calling Ross Chastain and Daniel Suarez’s breakthrough wins in 2022.
Taranto was red-hot for SportsLine in 2024 as he nailed 17 winners, including 16-1 longshot William Byron at the Daytona 500 and 14-1 longshot Chase Elliott at Texas. He correctly picked the Straight Talk Wireless 400 winner in Larson on March 23. Anyone following his NASCAR picks at their favorite sportsbooks could have seen huge returns.
Now, Taranto has analyzed the starting lineup and odds for Sunday’s 2025 NASCAR Save Mart 350 in Sonoma . He’s only sharing his best bets at SportsLine. You can also use them to take advantage of the latest FanDuel promo code, DraftKings promo code or BetMGM promo code.
2025 NASCAR Save Mart 350 expert picks
For the 2025 Save Mart 350 in Sonoma, Taranto is high on road specialist van Gisbergen at +140. He has dominated road courses this year, winning two of them and placing sixth at the other. He led the most laps (60) en route to the win at the Viva Mexico 250 in June and claimed the win at last week’s Grant Park 165.
At the March 2 Echo Park Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, he finished sixth. Van Gisbergen also won the 2023 Grant Park 220, for his only other NASCAR Cup Series victory. He is a three-time season champion in his Supercars Championship career. He earned wins in 2016, 2021 and 2022. See which other drivers he’s backing at SportsLine.
Top NASCAR props for Sonoma
Head-to-head: Taranto sees Ryan Preece (+175) finishing ahead of Tyler Reddick (-240). Although Preece has yet to finish in the top-10 at Sonoma, he has five top-10 finishes over the past eight Cup Series races. He was seventh a week ago at Chicago, and was eighth at Pocono last month. His best finish this season was at Las Vegas in March, when he placed third.
Reddick, meanwhile, is coming off back-to-back top-five finishes. He took fourth at Atlanta and third in Chicago. Prior to that stretch, however, Reddick struggled a bit, finishing 32nd at Pocono, 20th at Mexico City and 13th at Michigan. He has seven top-10 finishes in 2025. See all of Taranto’s picks at SportsLine.
How to make 2025 Save Mart 350 predictions
Taranto has also identified four other drivers in his 2025 NASCAR Save Mart 350 best bets. He’s also high on a huge NASCAR longshot who’s going off around 80-1, potentially netting any backer a huge payday. You can only see who they are here.

Sports Seriously
Another week, another win for Shane van Gisbergen.
The Trackhouse Racing driver made it back-to-back wins for the first time in his young NASCAR Cup Series career with a dominating victory at Sonoma Raceway.
Van Gisbergen took the pole position for Sunday’s race in Sonoma after sweeping the pole positions and the race wins in both the Xfinity and Cup Series events last weekend in Chicago.
This weekend was a similar story with even more dominance on race day. In all, van Gisbergen led 97 of the 110 laps of the race. He’s by far the top driver on road courses this year with three wins (Mexico City, Chicago, Sonoma) out of four races.
“Trackhouse Racing gave me a great Chevrolet again. What a great couple of weeks!” van Gisbergen said after the race. “Just to execute, make no mistakes, have great pit stops, great strategy and be able to hold them off there at the end – it’s incredible. Chase (Briscoe) was driving really well. We had a lot of fun there.”
The New Zealander started Sunday’s race from the pole and kept in front early. He pitted just before the end of Stage 1, ceding the stage win to fellow Trackhouse Racing driver Ross Chastain, and re-took the lead soon after his stop to win Stage 2.
Another pit stop dropped him down the order during Stage 3 but he quickly recovered to take the lead once again by lap 90. He kept control through late caution periods to secure the win.
Chase Briscoe came home second – exactly where he started the race. Chase Elliott, Michael McDowell and Christopher Bell rounded out the top five.
“I don’t know if I really saw everything (van Gisbergen) had, truthfully,” Briscoe said after the race. “I felt like every time I would get close; he would just start driving back away. We were definitely the second-best car. I don’t really know what more I need – maybe a little bit a grip. But even if I had a little more grip, I don’t know if I’m going to be able to gain the speed that he had.
“But overall, great day for the Bass Pro Shops Toyota. This is by far my worst race track, so to run second to him, it definitely means a lot, so proud of the day.”
Round three of the in-season challenge saw the 32-driver field whittled down once again. Four drivers remain: Ty Dillon, John Hunter Nemechek, Ty Gibbs and Tyler Reddick.
Dillon and Nemechek square off next week in the top half of the bracket, while Gibbs and Reddick face off to decide the bottom half of the bracket.
The rest of the Cup Series field will have a much better chance at victory next weekend in Dover. That’s also the penultimate round of the NASCAR in-season challenge that will leave two drivers in contention for the $1 million prize.
Thirty-two drivers entered the in-season challenge. After three rounds, just four remain, including just one driver from the top 10 seeds. Here’s the bracket entering Round 4 in Dover:
Top half of bracket
- No. 32 Ty Dillon vs. No. 12 John Hunter Nemechek
Bottom half of bracket
- No. 23 Tyler Reddick vs. No. 6 Ty Gibbs

In a masterclass of road course racing, Shane van Gisbergen powered his No. 88 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet to victory in the Toyota/Save Mart 350, leading a staggering 97 of 110 laps to secure his third NASCAR Cup Series win of the season.
Starting from pole position, van Gisbergen controlled the pace from the outset, winning Stage 2 and fending off late-race challenges from Chase Briscoe and Chase Elliott, both of whom surged forward on fresher tires during a flurry of late cautions. Despite the pressure, SVG held firm, showcasing precision and poise through Sonoma’s technical turns.
Race Highlights:
- Lead Changes: 12 among multiple drivers
- Cautions: 6 for 17 laps
- Margin of Victory: ~1.3 seconds
- Stage Winners: Ross Chastain (Stage 1), Shane van Gisbergen (Stage 2)

Van Gisbergen’s win marks his third consecutive road course victory, further cementing his reputation as one of NASCAR’s elite road racers.
“We had an amazing car. Chase Briscoe, what a great racer and gave me respect. Jumped the last one a little bit and it was pretty tense, but amazing. So stoked for Red Bull, Trackhouse, Chevy. I believe we had a really fun weekend here, some great races, and I hope everyone enjoyed that.” Said Gisbergen
“It means everything. That’s why I race cars. I had an amazing time in Australia, and then to come here and the last couple weeks or years actually has been a dream come true. I’ve really enjoyed my time in NASCAR. Thanks, everyone, for making me feel so welcome. I hope I’m here for a long time to come.” Continued Gisbergen
The Cup Series now heads to Dover Motor Speedway on July 20, where van Gisbergen will look to extend his hot streak on a very different kind of track. But for now, Sonoma belongs to SVG.
