“A Lot of It’s Up in the Air”: Bill Belichick Weighs In on How He Is Navigating the Uncharted Waters of NIL as UNC HC

NFL contracts have always been streamlined and at the fingertips of a coach like Bill Belichick. But the former Patriot is learning that navigating NIL is a very different challenge. For a coach who came from a league full of rules, there’s currently a noticeable lack of them when it comes to recruiting in the NCAA.

When we think of Belichick, we think of many traits and attributes. But perhaps the most noticeable of all his quirks is how meticulous he is about his ways. When you’re 73, you eventually grow accustomed to doing things a certain way.

However, a recent interview with Rece Davis suggests that Belichick hasn’t yet figured out the rules of NIL. It’s been an interesting navigation process for him, mostly filled with questions and trying to understand his parameters.

“For me, it’s really pretty simple. Tell me what the rules are, and then we’ll play by them. Right now, a lot of it’s up in the air,” Belichick shared on ESPN College Football.

“Once the house settlement’s done, once some rules are solidified, and honestly, it’ll probably take a year for this to settle in and see how things go. There’ll be some adjustments made.”

It definitely still feels like the Wild Wild West when it comes to the current state of NIL. At the moment, there’s no standardized set of rules—at least at the federal level. That’s why the NCAA has called on lawmakers to establish a uniform framework around it.

But with the amount of issues going on in the world right now, mixed with other factors like convenience and timeliness, NIL doesn’t seem like it’s going to be sorted out anytime soon. At least, not for another 2-3 years.

Yet, Belichick doesn’t seem to care about what the rules are going to be for it. He simply wants to know what they are so that he can legally operate his UNC Tar Heels football team.

“I’d say right now, it’s a lot of ‘we’re not sure, we’ll have to wait and see.’ Some people view it one way, some people view it another way. You just have to come to an agreement on that. But I think things will settle eventually,” Belichick concluded.

It’s not exactly what fans of college football want to hear. Complaints surrounding Ohio State and Oregon’s ability to essentially pay for their football rosters drew the ire of many this past season. And with no rules on how much you can give to players, it’s become a contest of popularity, and who has the highest NIL payroll.

For Belichick, this must be tough to navigate. In the NFL, there was a free agency period, and every team had a hard salary cap they couldn’t exceed. It was a much clearer and more defined set of rules… and fairer, too.

But now in college, who knows how much NIL payroll UNC has to offer? Furthermore, who knows how much they’re allowed to spend, when they can spend it, or how much more other schools have? That’s information privy to very few. Belichick certainly has access to some of it, but it must still be difficult to fully grasp.

It’ll be interesting to continue tracking how Bill adjusts to college football. The product on the field may be similar, but off it, it’s a whole different ballgame. That’s what he’s learning day by day.

The 2025 season opener for Syracuse football is officially 90 days away,

In the meantime, the Orange are connecting with the local community.

Meier’s Creek Brewing Company hosted an NIL meet and greet with players on Saturday afternoon. Fans mingled with their favorite Orange stars and participated in activities like a punting contest with SU punter Jack Stonehouse.

The players in attendance included Stonehouse, DT Dion “Tank” Wilson Jr., DL Rashard Perry, OT Byron Washington, and TE David Clement.

“It’s amazing getting to interact with the fans,” said Washington. “They get to see how we are without any equipment on, and I think that’s a good opportunity for us to show them that we’re not always mean. We’re friendly, and we can just turn it on and off.”

“It means everything to me, being there for the fans,” said Wilson Jr. “They make the Dome what it is, and the area what it is.”

Clement agreed, saying that it’s a valuable experience to connect with the community because the fans “get to see us as people.”

The Orange open the season on August 30th against Tennessee at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA.

Cooper Flagg reportedly made staggering $28 million in NIL money in one season at Duke

Cooper Flagg might be taking a pay cut to go to the NBA.

Flagg, who is expected to go to the Mavericks with the No. 1 pick in the draft, earned $28 million through two NIL deals during his one year at Duke, reporter Howard Bryant told Bob Costas on “The 92nd Street Y.”

Entering Duke as the No. 1-ranked freshman in the country, Flagg had a $13 million deal with New Balance and a $15 million deal with Fanatics.

It is unclear if those figures represent the totality of multi-year deals or a one-year payment.

Either way, the money didn’t distract Flagg from the prize as he won National Player of the Year and led Duke to the Final Four.

The top pick in the 2025 NBA Draft is expected to sign a four-year, $62.7 million contract, according to Spotrac.com.

That averages out to a shade under $16 million per year – or about the same as what another former Duke star, Grayson Allen, earned to average 10.6 points per game in 64 games and seven starts for the lowly Wizards this season.

Celtics star Jayson Tatum has the highest average salary in the NBA at $62.7 million.

Of course, Flagg can still supplement his on-court income with endorsement deals. He will be represented by mega-agency CAA.

The Mavericks surprisingly won the NBA Draft lottery despite having a less than two percent chance to get the No. 1 pick.

It sparked a new wave of NBA conspiracy theories that the league was rewarding the Mavericks with Flagg for making their head-scratching trade of Luka Doncic to the Lakers for a return that amounted to peanuts when compared to other blockbuster deals.

Presumptive No. 2 pick Dylan Harper played at Rutgers after signing an undisclosed NIL deal with Fanatics.

Harper’s teammate at Rutgers, presumptive No. 3 pick Ace Bailey, had an NIL deal with Nike.

ESPN’s On3 ranked Flagg as the second-most-desirable NIL athlete in college sports last season, behind Texas backup quarterback Arch Manning.

In the name, image, and likeness era, college football general managers have become a position of necessity. They manage millions of dollars in NIL funding and have to watch how every dollar is spent to build competitive rosters while maintaining some sort of ethical and compliance standards. It has been alleged that there are going to be rosters taking the field next season that cost upwards of $35-40 million.

Texas Tech has fully embraced the NIL game and used it to entice 21 transfer players to come to Lubbock. At the center of that success is new GM James Blanchard. Blanchard was a hot commodity and turned down a Director of Player Personnel position at Notre Dame to build at Tech. Recently, Blanchard indicated that he views Texas Tech in a similar way to what Oregon must have looked like when that program was on the verge of becoming a national power.

“As far as resources and alignment go, this has to be one of the best five jobs in America. Now, we have to put a proven product on the field and get those results to back that up. But from the admin to the donors to the coaches and support staff, I can only imagine this is how it felt at Oregon when they first started getting tread on those tires”

– Texas Tech football GM James Blanchard

Blanchard used the NIL power given to him from an alumni base that has its foundations in oil money to revamp an 8-5 team into a team that many analysts see as a favorite to win the Big 12. Beyond that, Tech has the skill and experience to make the 2026 College Football Playoff and compete with the big boys of college football. With Blanchard in place and a war chest of an NIL program, Tech is poised to be a consistent threat in college football for years to come.

Kentucky named one of college basketball’s biggest transfer portal winners by CBS Sports

It was a very, very good offseason for Mark Pope and the Kentucky Wildcats, retaining almost all of the team’s production with remaining eligibility, signing three top-40 high school recruits and adding one of the top transfer portal classes in the country. With 14 talented pieces on the roster going into 2025-26, there aren’t many groups better from top to bottom when you combine ability, versatility, size, experience and depth.

In fact, there may not have been a bigger winner of the offseason than Kentucky — at least if you look at the program’s five top-60 portal additions, as David Cobb of CBS Sports believes.

In a list of the biggest winners of the 2025 portal cycle, the Wildcats sit atop the list put together by CBS Sports, a class that included six total newcomers and just two departures in Kerr Kriisa and Travis Perry.

“Kentucky went shopping in the luxury aisle and came away with some high-end portal additions to reinforce a roster that is losing five double-figure scorers to due to the expiration of eligibility,” Cobb said of the Cats. “Five of the additions are ranked among the top-60 transfers, headlined by No. 12 Jayden Quaintance. After shining as a shot-blocking freshman at Arizona State last season, Quaintance will combine with ex-Alabama forward Mo Dioubate to give the Wildcats a ferocious front court. Jaland Lowe (Pitt) will run the show at point guard after averaging 5.5 assists for the Panthers, while Denzel Aberdeen (Florida) and Kam Williams (Tulane) will add perimeter pop.

“Year 1 under coach Mark Pope showed proof of concept, and now the Wildcats are poised to keep building after a strong offseason.”

Not too shabby.

Among the other big winners: Louisville, St. John’s, UCLA, Michigan, Kansas State, Washington, UConn, Florida, San Diego State and George Washington.

The losers? North Carolina, Kansas, Arizona, UCF, Oregon State, Washington State, Memphis and Robert Morris.

Kentucky sits at No. 2 nationally in On3’s transfer portal team rankings, that rating system combining both additions and departures. Quaintance sits at No. 4 overall in the On3 Industry Ranking, followed by Lowe at No. 52, Dioubate at No. 61, Williams at No. 80 and Aberdeen at No. 89.

Colorado Buffaloes Gain Transfer Portal Commitment From Ex

Depth shouldn’t be an issue within coach Deion Sanders’ revamped offensive line.

On Friday, the Colorado Buffaloes picked up their ninth offensive lineman from the transfer portal this offseason as Cooper Lovelace announced his commitment. Lovelace played his first three post-high school seasons at Butler Community College (2019-21) in Kansas before spending two years with the USC Trojans (2022-23) and one with the Northwestern Wildcats (2024). The three-star transfer (per247Sports) is a seventh-year senior who benefited from the NCAA’s recent ruling that granted former junior college players an extra year of eligibility.

Lovelace played in 11 games at Northwestern last season, including nine starts at left guard, and allowed only one sack. He also has great size for an interior offensive lineman at 6-foot-5, 315 pounds.

During his first season at USC in 2022, Lovelace saw 22 total snaps at left and right guard across three games. In 2024, he saw minimal action in four games at right tackle and right guard. Lovelace was the highest-ranked junior college transfer interior offensive lineman in 2022, per 247Sports.

Lovelace entered the transfer portal on April 25 following one season at Northwestern and visited the South Carolina Gamecocks on May 2 before ultimately committing to the Buffs on Friday.

Other transfer portal offensive linemen who’ve joined the Buffs this offseason include Larry Johnson III (Tennessee Volunteers), Andre Roye Jr. (Maryland Terrapins), Walker Andersen (UCLA Bruins), Xavier Hill (Memphis Tigers), Zarian McGill (Louisiana Tech Bulldogs), Zylon Crisler (Illinois Fighting Illini), Mana Taimani (Ole Miss Rebels) and Aki Ogunbiyi (Texas A&M Aggies). Left tackle Jordan Seaton will likely be the only returning player on Colorado’s starting offensive line come Week 1.

Colorado’s offensive line is led by a three-man coaching tandem of Gunnar White, Andre Gurode and George Hegamin. In March, White spoke on what he’s looking for in transfer portal offensive linemen.

“Athletes and size, right?” White said. “In order to run the ball, not only do you have to be powerful, but you have to be athletic, too, to change up the schemes if you want to pull a guard or pull a tackle or whatnot. And then we try to get length on the edge, too. My philosophy is that if you get tackles, tackles can easily screw down inside. They can go for guards. You don’t see 6-foot-6 people just walking around the Earth anyway. They are hard to find, much less that are strong and are fast and have great bend and can run, too. That is part of the molding and development part of it.”

The Buffs also picked up a commitment from former North Alabama linebacker Shaun Myers on Friday, giving “Coach Prime” 32 incoming transfers. According to 247Sports, Colorado’s transfer class still ranks No. 19 nationally and No. 2 in the Big 12 Conference.
