Welcome to “Spin Cycle,” Casino Reports’ weekly Friday roundup of all things impactful, intriguing, impressive, or idiotic in the gambling industry. Pull up a chair, grab a stack of chips and a glass of your beverage of choice, and take a spin with us through this week’s news cycle …

Sweeps in retreat? Maybe not …

For the most part, the news in 2025 regarding online casinos that use the sweepstakes-prizing model has flowed in one direction. It’s been legislation to ban sweeps, it’s been cease-and-desists, and it’s been operators exiting various states.

But that momentum showed signs of reversing this week, thanks to a pair of developments.

On its Q2 earnings call last week, social gaming company PLAYSTUDIOS indicated it is planning to enter the sweepstakes casino space before the end of 2025. “We expect to be live across the full footprint of qualified U.S. states later this year,” CEO Andrew Pascal said on the call.

A few days after that, B-Two Operations — which runs several social/sweeps brands, most notably McLuck — lifted its operating restrictions in two states, Alabama and Georgia. This has been a rarity of late, for a major sweeps operator to re-enter two states it had previously exited because of pending lawsuits in those states.

… but C&Ds aren’t slowing down …

Michigan, long the most aggressive state in trying to put the kibosh on unregulated operators — be they sweepstakes sites, offshores, or both — announced 15 new cease-and-desist orders Thursday.

The list:

  • 7 Bit Casino

  • Avia Games Inc.

  • Grande Vegas Casino

  • High Country Casino

  • Liberty Slots Casino

  • Lincoln Casino

  • Lucky Hippo Casino

  • Miami Club Casino

  • PrimaPlay Casino

  • Slot Madness

  • Slots Plus Casino

  • Sun Palace Casino

  • Vegas Casino Online

  • Vegas2Web Casino

“These unlawful operators try to present themselves as legitimate entertainment options, but they offer zero player protections, no accountability, and a real risk to consumers,” Michigan Gaming Control Board Executive Director Henry Williams said via press release. “Our message is simple: If you want to offer gambling in Michigan, follow the law or we will stop you. We will continue to work aggressively to keep illegal gambling out of our state.”

Deal me out

Here’s a sign of the changing times for ya: At Golden Gate, the oldest active casino in downtown Las Vegas, there will soon be no more human dealers at table games.

The property is owned by Derek Stevens, who also owns Circa in downtown Vegas, where for nearly a year, the second floor of the casino has had no live dealers, instead filled only with slot machines and electronic table games. Stevens has been pleased with the results and feedback on the second floor at Circa, so now the approach is coming to Golden Gate.

The good news for the dealers at Golden Gate: Stevens told the Las Vegas Review-Journal they’ve all been offered positions at Circa or at another Stevens property, The D.

Strange times we’re living in, with land-based casinos phasing out live dealers … and online casinos looking to expand their live-dealer offerings.

  • All this weekend, from Friday through Sunday, Lilac Club Casino in Rochester, New Hampshire, is hosting a “Beat the Champ” poker tournament, with 17-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth on hand to meet fans, greet fans, and possibly beat fans in a Saturday tournament with an estimated $100,000 prize pool as well as a Sunday cash game. A word of warning: Hellmuth is known as “The Poker Brat” for a reason. You may take his chips, but he won’t let you take them quietly.

  • We’ll give the final word this week to our friend Richard Schuetz, who had a very Schuetz-ian reaction to Missouri’s decision Friday to award one of its stand-alone mobile betting licenses to Circa Sportsbook:

One of the most interesting responses concerns the shock people find in Missouri picking Circa. Imagine a state selecting a book renowned for its exceptional staff and honorable reputation.

Twitter recap and highlights of Bengals' Friday practice

The Bengals’ biggest questions heading into training camp were in the pass rush and in the pass protection.

Friday at practice, one of those seemed much better than the other one, as the pass rush seemed to be absolutely dominating the Bengals’ offensive line. Shemar Stewart and Kris Jenkins were both dominating upfront, which is hopefully a good sign for the pass rush, but it is also a bad sign for the offensive line.

While speaking about the pass rush, Trey Hendrickson is still out there just helping coach the young defenders with no deal in sight.

All was not dark for the offense, though. Even as the pass rush was terrorizing Burrow, the wide receivers were still making plays, including a great catch by Andrei Iosivas, which could point to even more year 3 improvements for him. The vets, of course, aren’t ones to be shown up, so Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase also got impressive touchdown catches from Joe Burrow.

On the rehab field were Jermaine Burton and Mike Gesicki, so the offensive firepower wasn’t even all out there. Although there is no fix for the guard position coming from the rehab field, it could be time for the Bengals to look outside the current roster for a solution there.

Here is what Twitter had to say about the Bengals’ Friday practice session.

TONIGHT, TNA Wrestling presents Emergence streaming LIVE at 8pm ET on TNA+ from the Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena in Baltimore, MD. Tickets are on-sale now at Ticketmaster.com.

As one of the most dominant factions in TNA Wrestling history, The System looked to restore order after losing ground to Superstars from WWE NXT. Moose vowed to lead the fight for TNA, as he turned his attention towards the reigning TNA World Champion, Trick Williams.

In a blockbuster tag team main event on iMPACT!, Moose would join forces with his System ally, Eddie Edwards, to battle Trick Williams and A.J. Francis. The closing moments saw KC Navarro inadvertently strike Williams with his crutch, allowing Moose to capitalize and pin Williams following an explosive Spear.

With a pinfall victory over the TNA World Champion under his belt, Moose will now challenge Trick Williams for the TNA World Title LIVE August 15 at Emergence. Can Moose bring the TNA World Title back home? Or will the era of Trick-NA continue?

After recapturing the TNA World Tag Team Championship in an awe-inspiring Ladder match at Slammiversary, The Hardys are looking to immortalize their legacy as one of the greatest tag teams of all time. Now they must put their titles on the line against another fan-favorite duo, Zachary Wentz and Myron Reed of The Rascalz, who are coming off a victory over the former champions, The Nemeths.

After becoming the youngest TNA X-Division Champion of all time at Slammiversary, Leon Slater would make his first successful title defense less than two weeks later in a breathtaking three-way match against Jason Hotch and Cedric Alexander.

Later in the night, Alexander would congratulate Slater on his victory, but the two agreed that a singles showdown was needed to determine who the better man truly is.

With that, we now know that the fighting champion, Leon Slater, will defend the X-Division Championship against Cedric Alexander LIVE August 15 at Emergence. Who will soar to victory in what promises to be an awe-inspiring encounter?

During an emotional interview with Tom Hannifan, Sami Callihan contemplated his retirement from in-ring competition. But the “Death Machine” wants to give himself one final opportunity to prove that he still has what it takes. That opportunity will come at Emergence when Callihan goes head to head with the surging Mike Santana.

The competition is more fierce than ever in the Knockouts tag team division. After chaos ensued in the aftermath of the Knockouts World Title match between Jacy Jayne and Ash By Elegance, reigning Knockouts World Tag Team Champions The Elegance Brand will now defend against Fatal Influence, The IInspiration and the team of Léi Yǐng Lee and Xia Brookside in a four-way matchup.

Steve Maclin and Jake Something have been embroiled in a highly intense rivalry for the TNA International Title. Recently on iMPACT!, their one-on-one championship encounter ended in a no contest after both men were counted out. Now the two are set to face off once again with the TNA International Championship up for grabs but this time, there will be no disqualifications and no countouts.

Recently on iMPACT!, Mustafa Ali scored a big victory over Joe Hendry, albeit not without the help of his loyal followers. Now, Ali will look to continue his relentless tirade when he steps into the ring with Matt Cardona at Emergence. Cardona is coming off a momentous victory over another member of Order 4, John Skyler.

Battle lines have been drawn as The System vows to restore order in TNA Wrestling. At Emergence, Eddie Edwards and Brian Myers will wage war with A.J. Francis and Rich Swann of FIR$T CLA$$, just one night after Swann stole the victory in their six-man tag team showdown.

The action begins on Countdown to Emergence streaming LIVE AND FREE at 7:30pm ET on TNA+ and TNA digital platforms.

After coming up short against The Rascalz, The Nemeths took out their frustrations on the fans in Rhode Island, members of TNA staff, and even The Home Town Man himself. While Santino Marella has suspended Nic for his actions, Ryan must now lock up with The Home Town Man in singles competition, without the help of his big brother.

Knockouts take center stage on Countdown to Emergence after Rosemary spewed green mist into the face of Indi Hartwell. As Hartwell continues her climb through the division, the demonic Rosemary looks to bring her momentum to an abrupt halt.

Atlas School highlights graduating students' capstone projects on Demo Day

TULSA, Okla. — Atlas School, a software engineering school in Tulsa, highlighted their graduating students’ capstone projects on the school’s Demo Day.

“Demo Day is the culmination of 20 months of our software engineering program at Atlas,” said General Education Instructor Brianna Al-Alawneh. “We have three subspecialties. That’s machine learning, systems programming and full stack web development. Demo Day is a chance for students who are graduating to team up and develop new ideas and new programs. This could be anything from mobile application to web applications and everything in between. We have employer partners that sometimes will sign up to work with students and come to the Demo Day to see their ideas come to life brought by our groups and our students.”

Al-Alawneh described some of the capstone projects completed by the program’s graduating students.

“We have the ‘Little Guy’s Game Link’ and those are for indie web developers and game developers that are needing to edit and process their games to make sure that they are working effectively and efficiently. It actually goes through those and debugs them…We also have a group that is working [on an] electrical panhandler. They are working with resource management for our homeless population trying to make it easier for them to receive donations via things like CashApp or even credit card donations all through a secure location that’s centralized so that people can trust it.”

FOX23 had the opportunity to speak with a group that developed an application to assist those struggling with their mental health.

“Our project was conceptualized in order to help people with their mental health,” explained Machine Learning Engineer Abigail Aleman. “In particular, when they’re in a state of crisis so that they have a place to go if clinics are closed and they’re not able to get in to see a doctor, so that they can chat with the chatbot on the website and receive some help. There’s resources on there.”

Aleman said the goal of the application is to provide people with easily accessible resources without having to face any judgement.

“Really ultimately, I think it was about helping people. Mental health is definitely stigmatized in our society and so I feel that this kind of makes it easier to talk about these kinds of things.”

Al-Alawneh shared how it feels to see students evolve and grow their skills over the course of the program.

“It’s kind of indescribable to be a part of—a small part of—a journey for people in technology who are just starting out because you never know who someone is going to be, so when you see them taking steps and gaining confidence, you just wonder how far it can go. It’s such a privilege to watch and be a part of.”

Enrollment for Atlas Schools’ next class of students ends on August 22 with the first day of instruction set for September 2.

To apply and to learn more, you can visit their website at atlasschool.com.
