NEW ORLEANS, La. – The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) has announced the final standings for its Program of the Year Awards. The Carroll College Men finished the 2024-25 season in fourth place in the final standings.

Fresh off of a program-best team finish at the 2025 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championship, the Fighting Saints were recognized with a top-five finish in the final USTFCCCA Program of the Year standings – another program-best.

The USTFCCCA Program of the Year Award honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field seasons) based on the institution’s finish at their respective Championships.

Fueled by a bevy of All-American performances and individual titles, it was a banner year for the Carroll Men, as the Cross Country team, and both Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field teams placed inside the top-12 team scores at their respective championship events.

The Men’s Cross Country team, paced by All-American Zack Gacnik (Confier, Colo. / JR), completed the National Championship 8k course with the fastest team time in school history (2:05:53). The 12th place finish at the national meet was the program’s best since the 2015 season.

The superb year continued on for the Saints at the 2025 NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships, as Weston Means (Billings, Mont. / SO) captured Carroll’s first individual title since 2022 with a school record High Jump of 2.15m (7′ ½”). Three other Saints grabbed All-American honors at the championship (Gacnik – 5000m | Krack, Monaco – Heptathlon), leading Carroll to an 11th place finish.

2024-25 culminated with a Frontier Conference Championship, a pair of individual champions, and a top-five finish at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Means successfully defended his High Jump crown, sweeping the yearly competition. Tucker Monaco (Bakersfield, Calif. / JR) earned All-American honors in both the Pole Vault (8th place) and Decathlon (3rd place). Josh Smalley (Missoula, Mont. / SR) ended his career with an All-American 6th place finish in the Pole Vault. Reuben Hornby (Kalispell, Mont. / JR) finished runner-up in the Javelin, while Brycen Garnder (Spokane, Wash. / JR) placed fifth in the 3,000m Steeplechase. Carson Krack (Whitefish, Mont. / FR) was outstanding, winning the Decathlon as a true freshman, to help vault the Saints into their highest team placement in program history.

In order to be eligible for the award, teams must qualify for each of the Championships. Scoring is based on the team’s finish at each Championship in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field (i.e. 1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points … 31st = 31 points) with the lowest total score for all three championships combined determining the award winner. Ties among schools split points for positions taken.

Power cuts may be inconvenient for most, but for Paul Buhagiar, they could be fatal.

The 65-year-old, a former policeman and water polo player, suffers from pulmonary fibrosis and is now homebound in his Santa Venera apartment.

Pulmonary fibrosis is a chronic lung condition and is characterised by scarring and stiffening of the lung tissue, making it difficult for oxygen to pass into the bloodstream.

He takes over 700 pills a month, some funded by the government, others paid out of his own pocket, and relies on an oxygen machine to stay alive.

So when the electricity goes off, so does his only source of oxygen.

Paul Buhagiar said he has made peace with the idea of death, but not the fear that a power cut could bring it on suddenly.Paul Buhagiar said he has made peace with the idea of death, but not the fear that a power cut could bring it on suddenly.

He shared his story with Hospice Malta in a video interview ahead of this Sunday’s 12-hour telethon, themed Ħajja sal-aħħar [Life till the end].

“I am apparently electrically operated. If the electricity stops, so do I,” he shared. “If you don’t get it back within a few minutes, you’re gone. You turn purple. I have already had a number of close shaves when the electricity goes,” said the pragmatic Buhagiar.

Speaking to Times of Malta, he said he has made peace with the idea of death, but not the fear that a power cut could bring it on suddenly.

“I know where I am heading, so I am not scared to die. I’ve lived a good life,” he said.

“But sometimes the power cuts are the only thing that run through my mind. So much so I am scared to sleep sometimes,” he said.

One of his greatest worries is that a power cut will hit while he’s asleep and unable to react.

“This is my biggest concern these days,” said Buhagiar.

He noted that he even got a generator to use as backup just in case, but due to the heat in summer, even that can overheat and stop.

Buhagiar has lived with the condition for around 20 years, but his health has sharply declined over the past two years and he has been using Hospice’s services since June last year. He now only leaves the house for hospital visits.

Despite the challenges, he maintains an upbeat outlook and reflects fondly on his life.

“I have enjoyed my life. I lived in the UK and spent a lot of time at sea, swimming or fishing. Being by the sea used to make me very happy.”

Though his world has shrunk, he still finds joy in visits from friends and family and watching sports. The care he receives from Hospice Malta has become a vital source of comfort.

“To me hospice is like a second mum. Because I am being loved as much as a mother would her child,” said Buhagiar. He shared that he feels incredibly supported and lucky to receive this service.

Hospice Malta has supported 1,560 patients this year and now operates from the new St Michael Hospice, which will soon house 16 in-patient rooms. Demand is rising and according to Hospice they receive three new patients each day. Sunday’s telethon (11am–11pm) will be aired on every local station and will help fund its free professional home and hospice care.

“What you have to do it because you don’t know what tomorrow will bring,” shared Buhagiar as a reminder for anyone willing to listen.

Former MSU baseball players Byrne, Stroh getting shot in pro ball

They both know it’s a long shot that they’ll reach the major leagues, but for former Minnesota State baseball players Aidan Byrne and Zach Stroh, at least it’s an opportunity.

The two players recently signed contracts to play in the American Association of Professional Baseball. It is perhaps the lowest rung of the professional baseball ladder.

AAPB was formed in 2005 and has teams mostly in cities not served by Major League Baseball or its minor league affiliates. In 2020, the AAPB became an official MLB Partner League and the level of play is considered the equivalent of high Class A ball in the minors.

Byrne signed on May 30 with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Stroh signed June 23 with the Milwaukee Milkmen.

“It was a welcome surprise,” said Byrne. “I had taken about a week off from baseball after leaving MSU. “Then I had been hitting and lifting for a couple of weeks when I got the call. I joined the Fargo club in Milwaukee.”

Byrne, a shortstop for both MSU and the RedHawks, has started slow offensively for Fargo-Moorhead, hitting .228 through 25 games. He’s been solid defensively with a .985 fielding percentage.

“Hitting (in the AAPB) has been an adjustment,” he said. “The pitchers here are pretty good. Many of them have minor league experience.”

At MSU, the Eagan native set program records for career walks, singles, hits and runs batted in. He hit .349 this spring as a Maverick and graduated with a business degree and also a 1-year graduate certificate in business leadership.

While attending MSU, Byrne played three summers with the Willmar Stingers of the Northwoods League collegiate baseball league. “That helped me a lot with adjusting to the grind of all the traveling.”

“I think MSU’s culture of excellence prepared me well for this,” he said. “Everybody is always pushing everybody else to get better.”

Stroh was at a wedding on June 29 when he got a text from the coach of the Milwaukee Milkmen. Less than 24 hours later he had joined the team in Fargo.

“It was sweet to get that text,” Stroh said. “I was hoping it would come. I still love playing baseball.”

The Elk River native led MSU in batting this spring with a .399 average. He had 13 doubles, seven home runs and 46 runs batted in.

But that was college, this is another level. Like Byrne, Stroh has been struggling at the plate since joining the Milkmen. Through three games he was hitting .167.

Also like Byrne, Stroh has three years of Northwoods League baseball under his belt. The rigors of long bus rides have not been an adjustment.

Mostly an outfielder for the Mavericks, Stroh has been converted back to catcher, which he played at Butler Community College before joining MSU. “It’s kind of like riding a bicycle, you don’t forget.”

Since he graduated MSU with a major in sports management and a minor in coaching, Stroh had been working in New Ulm for a roofing, siding, flooring company and was also coaching youth baseball in the metro area when he got the call.

“They understood this was an opportunity I had to take,” he said.

Stroh says his arm is stronger now after two years of playing outfield. He describes the starting pitching in the AAPB as similar to what he saw in college, but says the guys who come in to relieve throw pretty hard. “Most of the bullpen guys are throwing in the mid-90s.”

He aspires to be a coach when his playing days are over but he’s in no hurry. No timeline has been set for how long he’ll give organized baseball a shot.

‘”We’ll see how this year goes and then I’ll go from there,” he said. “You never know what can happen.”

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is not already thinking about her retirement from track and field. However, the 25-year-old hurdler and sprinter does not plan to be around for another decade.

You won’t have to let her out to pasture because she will already be there. Hypothetically speaking…

Nobody in track and field can touch McLaughlin-Levrone when it comes to the 400 hurdles right now. She is not too far off from that same status in the 400 flat even though she has yet to compete in the event at the World Championships or the Olympics.

To say Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is just now hitting her prime is a crazy thing to say because of how dominant she has been for so long already, but it is an accurate assessment of her current fitness and form. Unfortunately, as is with anything, the American superstar will one day start to decline.

She is going to hang it up once it reaches that point. Hopefully not soon!

McLaughlin-Levrone recently detailed her plans to retire before the age of 35 during an appearance on the Ready Set Go podcast. You will not see her on the track in 11 years! A decade more is more than enough.

There is an end point. I don’t think I’m one of the athletes where you’re gonna have to be like, “dude, it’s time for you…” I think I’m going to know for myself.

— Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, via Ready Set Go

The goal is to keep having fun.

I want to enjoy the rest of my career. The front has been so fulfilling. It’s been beautiful. We’ve accomplished some great things and obviously there’s still more that I am still striving towards.

— Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, via Ready Set Go

However, there is more to Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone than just track.

[I am in] this latter-half of [my career], because I just don’t see myself running for ten more years. We’ve accomplished quite a bit and I think there’s still more to be done, but I do feel like track and field is not everything for me. And I think the more time that passes, the more content I am with what the Lord has allowed us to do.

— Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, via Ready Set Go

This does not mean the 400-meter superstar is going to slow down any time soon.

I’m going to strive and work until the day I do hang up my spikes.

— Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, via Ready Set Go

It just means that there is an end in sight. The end is way off in the distance but it exists. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone is not going to run herself into the ground. Of course, this outlook could change over the next decade, but you won’t see her on the track at 35 running against girls half of her age. She is going to retire at some point. She is done as soon as it no longer starts to feel good.

What's big, purple and fuzzy? Meet the new mascot of the Erie Moon Mammoths

AI-assisted summaryJohn Oliver’s “Last Week Tonight” partnered with the Erie SeaWolves to rebrand the minor league team as the Moon Mammoths. The mascot, Fuzz E. Mammoth, is a large purple mammoth, is inspired by the discovery of mammoth remains in an Erie County lake and will debut on July 19.The SeaWolves will play as the Moon Mammoths for four games this season, with potential for future use pending MLB approval.A big, fuzzy mammoth mascot appeared alongside host John Oliver on the “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” show June 29. During that episode, Oliver and his team introduced Erie to its new Minor League Baseball team identity, replacing the SeaWolves for four games in the 2025 season.

With the new name, the Erie Moon Mammoths, came a new mascot: a giant purple mammoth with tusks, a long snout, wearing a black and lavender Moon Mammoths jersey and an astronaut helmet.

The back of the jersey in the promo Oliver used to introduce the team reads “Fuzz OG,” but the Instagram post from “Last Week Tonight” introduces the mascot as “Fuzz E. Mammoth.” The SeaWolves’ main mascot is C. Wolf, a giant gray wolf with a pirate hat and eye patch.

Here’s what we know so far about the new giant purple mammoth.

On the June 29 episode of "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver," Oliver introduces the new alternative identity of the Erie SeaWolves, the Erie Moon Mammoths. With a new identity comes a new fuzzy, purple mascot shown on the television show.

How did Fuzz E. Mammoth come to be?

This whole promotion started back in May when Oliver made a call out to MiLB teams wanting to rebrand a team. The catch was that Oliver and his team at the “Last Week Tonight” show would have full control over the rebrand.

When Erie SeaWolves Greg Coleman president heard of the contest, he submitted an email of 11 reasons why the SeaWolves were the perfect fit for this rebrand. The email caught the attention of Oliver and his team, and later became the reason as to how the SeaWolves eventually became the Moon Mammoths.

After being announced as the winners of the rebrand, it was up to Oliver and his team to create the new MiLB team identity. When they came up with the Erie Moon Mammoths in recognition of diver George Moon discovering mammoth remains in Lake Pleasant, Oliver said he was “as happy as I get as a human being,” according to mlb.com.

What is a moon mammoth?

The new mascot is a combination of big, fuzzy, purple, eccentric and Sesame Street.

Mlb.com describes the Moon Mammoth mascot as, “… think Snuffleupagus if he were purple with white tusks, could stand on his own two feet and had gotten a serious sudden injection of energy.”

The new mascot earned the seal of approval from Oliver’s own kids after they saw a prototype. They also had an inaccurate sense of what the mascot would be doing for a living as they believe he works on Sesame Street.HBO's "Last Week With John Oliver" introduces the new mascot to the new Erie Moon Mammoths on June 30.A familiar face behind the fuzzinessAn entertainer familiar to costumed performances was inside the body of the mascot during the appearance on the “Last Week Tonight” segment.Performer Noel MacNeal, who portrayed Bear in the “Bear in the Big Blue House” children’s series, was dancing around as Fuzz E. Meet the Mammoth on July 19

The new mammoth mascot will be making its debut at the SeaWolves (Moon Mammoths) game on July 19 against the Chesapeake Baysox.

The Baysox wrote to the SeaWolves on Instagram that they love the rebrand and will be bringing their alter ego, the Oyster Catchers, to the inaugural Moon Mammoths game.

The new Erie Moon Mammoth mascot shown with John Oliver, host of the HBO show "Last Week with John Oliver." Fans in Erie will meet the new mascot on July 19 at UPMC Park.

Oliver is expected to make an appearance in Erie on July 19 to introduce the Fuzz E. Mammoth to his new home in Erie.
