CCU men's basketball coach retools roster following tough season

Coastal Carolina men’s basketball head coach Justin Gray is retooling his roster after a disappointing first season at the helm.
Coming off a 10-22 record that included a 3-15 mark in Sun Belt Conference play, Gray has added eight players to the 2025 class through the spring signing period.
They consist of four Division I transfers, a Division II transfer, a junior college transfer and two high school signees.
The heavy turnover has become common in the era of the NCAA Transfer Portal and Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) payments to players, regardless of the previous season’s record.
The DI transfers are Josh Beadle from Boston College, DaJohn Craig from Oregon State, A.J. Dancler from Le Moyne and Jerry Ngopot from Sun Belt foe Louisiana-Monroe. Nadjrick Peat played at Division II Hawai’i Hilo and Derrick Green played at Brunswick Community College.
The prep additions are Devin Brown from the Academy of Science in Milwaukee and Tristan Thompson from Florence Wilson (SC) High.
Several of the incoming players have a lot of experience, as three are graduate transfers and one is a junior.
Gray has also added height and size, as two players are 6-foot-11 and one is 6-9.
Beadle, of Columbia, played at BC last year following three years at Clemson and averaged 5.9 points in 18.1 minutes per game for the Eagles, shooting 48.6% on 3-pointers and starting in 16 of the 31 games he played. The 6-3 guard was a key reserve on Clemson’s 2024 Elite Eight team and is in his final year of eligibility.
“We needed a guy with experience, and he brings winning experience to our program,” Gray said in a university release. “We needed a guy that can make plays for himself and others with the game on the line, and he has the talent to do both.”
Craig has three years of eligibility remaining after two seasons at Oregon State, where the 6-1 shooting guard with great jumping ability played in 22 games. He shot 46.7% from the field and 37.5% from outside the three-point arc last season before suffering a season-ending injury in early January after just 10 games.
Dancler, a 6-2 guard, was a second-team All-Northeast Conference selection at Le Moyne who has two years of eligibility remaining. He averaged 15.1 points and 3.4 assists while shooting 40.4% from three-point range last season, when he ranked in the top 10 in the league in 3-pointers made (second), three-point percentage (second), scoring (fourth), assists per game (sixth), assist to turnover ratio (seventh) and free throw percentage (10th).
Ngopot, a 6-11 center/forward who is from the Central African Republic, has played two years each at ULM and Saint Peter’s of the MAAC and averaged six points and 4.3 rebounds per game last ]year as a senior.
Peat, another 6-11 center/forward grad student, is a Jamaica native and rim protector who is moving up a division. He is a two-time PacWest Conference Defender of the Year who is first in career rebounds at Hawai’i Hilo with 648 and second in career blocks with 181. He averaged 7.7 points and 7.6 rebounds in 85 career collegiate games while ranking in the top 20 in Division II in blocked shots in each of the past three seasons.
“[Peat] will be a presence in the paint offensively and defensively,” Gray said in the release.
Green, a 6-9 Fayetteville, N.C. native, spent one year at Brunswick Community College, averaging 11.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per game while shooting 69% from the field to help the Dolphins win their fourth NJCAA Region X Championship title.
Gray adds staff member
Gray has also added to his staff, as Mike Brownhas been named director of player development.
The all-conference player at Western Carolina played one season professionally overseas before embarking on his coaching career, which has included stints in high school and college.
The native of Charlotte, N.C., spent the previous four seasons as an assistant coach at Lander University, helping the Bearcats to consecutive NCAA Division II tournament appearances, including a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2023.
Previously, Brown was a graduate assistant at Memphis under coach Penny Hardaway, assisting with scouting plans. In 2020-21, the Tigers went 20-8 overall and won the NIT championship. His coaching career started as an assistant at Olympic High School in North Carolina.
Brown has a bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurship from Western Carolina and master’s in sport and hospitality management with a concentration in sports commerce from Memphis.
Granger signs with NFL’s Panthers
Former Coastal Carolina basketball center Colin Granger has signed with the NFL’s Carolina Panthers as a tight end, the organization announced in April.
Granger is the tallest player on the organization’s roster at 6-9 and 225 pounds.
According to a Panthers release, this is “Granger’s first foray into football.”
“This isn’t surprising for me knowing Colin,” Gray said in a CCU release. “He is one of the most committed athletes I’ve ever coached. I told him before he’d be successful in anything because he’s always been disciplined and attacks everything with all he has. Those are the ingredients that bring success, and he possesses those. He knows the work has just begun and we are all here to support him.”
Granger played at Ohio University and Western Carolina – where he also played for Gray – before completing his five-year college career by averaging 7.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 17.8 minutes per game at CCU last season.
