Following the only “off weekend” of the season, the NASCAR Cup Series returns to action this week at one of the sport’s most iconic venues, Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.
Expectations are always high – and variable – for the high-speed, anything-goes brand of racing on a drafting track such as Talladega and Sunday’s Jack Links 500 (3 p.m. ET on FOX, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) will undoubtedly add to the track’s storied history.
Will the season’s most dominant drivers – Hendrick Motorsports’ Kyle Larson and William Byron, Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell and Denny Hamlin – add to their victory total? Will a driver from the perpetual championship contending Team Penske organization finally get that organization its first win of 2025? Or will Talladega produce a long-shot victor able to get it done in the frantic closing laps that make Talladega one of the most exciting venues on the schedule?
That unpredictability and genuine suspense is exactly what has made this race so compelling. Nine of the last 16 Talladega races have been decided on a last-lap pass. And there have been at least 66 lead changes in the last three races on the sport’s largest oval.
There are, however, drivers that have proven themselves favorites on the big track.
23XI Racing’s Tyler Reddick is the defending winner of this Spring Talladega race and HYAK Motorsports’ Ricky Stenhouse Jr. claimed his second Talladega win in the Fall.
It’s been 10 races since someone claimed back-to-back Talladega wins, however. That nod belongs to Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney, who has an impressive three Talladega wins, claiming trophies in 2019, 2020 and 2023.
He could really use a strong showing this weekend. The 2023 NASCAR Cup Series champion has endured a series of bad-luck showings this season – the results hardly matching the day’s effort on track. The driver of the No. 12 Team Penske Ford is ranked sixth in the championship – one of six drivers in the top-10 without a victory yet.
His teammate, reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion Joey Logano is in a similar situation. The driver of the No. 22 Ford has had strong showings in-race but yet to earn a top-five finish in the opening nine events of the season.
This year’s Daytona 500 winner – and current championship points leader – Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron is the only repeat winner on the big drafting tracks such as Daytona, Talladega and Atlanta with three wins in the last 12 races. But the driver of the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet has never won at Talladega.
Hamlin, a two-race winner, sits 30 points behind Byron in the standings. The longtime driver of the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota is considered a drafting track master with three Daytona 500 victories and a pair of Talladega trophies (2014 and 2020). Hamlin is the only driver to finish on the lead lap in all nine races of this season. His JGR teammate Christopher Bell – a series best three-race winner in 2025 – is ranked third in the championship and the driver of the No. 20 JGR Toyota is looking for his first Talladega win.
Hendrick’s Kyle Larson, a two-race winner this season, is another racing for his maiden Talladega series win. As dominating as the 2021 series champion has been throughout his career, he’s never won at a drafting style track. His teammate, 2020 series champ Chase Elliott, sits fifth in points and is racing for his first win of the year. He won at Talladega in 2019 and 2022.
Only five drivers have won this year – Byron, Hamlin, Bell, Larson and Wood Brothers Racing’s Josh Berry. Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing owner-driver Brad Keselowski leads all active drivers with six Talladega trophies, including the first of his championship career in 2009. He finished runner-up in both Talladega races last year. He’s currently ranked 31st in the points and badly needing a good showing to get back in the title talk.
“I still think Talladega is one of those racetracks where anybody can win. Next Gen has been a little bit fickle at Talladega in the way that it values different things than the car before did,” Keselowski explained. “It seems to really value the last pit stop and executing that at a very high level and then the fuel saving stuff, which I think is gonna be the word everybody hates after this weekend. So, it’s different.
“It’s a different type of racing than what Talladega was four or five years ago before the Next Gen car, but I think that’s part of what makes Talladega special is just how the racing there has evolved at least a half dozen times since I’ve been in Cup and its different eras of racing that values different things. I appreciate that. There are certainly types that you like more than others of racing there, but I do think that it’s a place where I think of the 39 entries, 33 of them have a realistic shot of winning.”
Two-time series champ Kyle Busch is also a multi-time Talladega race winner, last taking a trophy at the big track in 2023. The driver of the No. 8 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet sits 15th in the standings and is looking for his first win in the series since that 2023 season.
Defending Spring race winner Reddick and his 23XI Racing teammate Bubba Wallace are winless in 2025 but also considered drafting track favorites. They are ranked seventh and eighth – respectively – in the standings. Wallace claimed his first series trophy at Talladega in 2021.
Of note, the driver that led the most laps in the last nine Talladega races failed to win.
Busch Light Pole Qualifying is Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. (Amazon Prime, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). Spire Motorsports driver Michael McDowell is the defending pole-winner. Interestingly, the pole winner hasn’t finished better than 17th in the last six Talladega races.
Flat-Out and Fearless: Talladega Promises Another Xfinity Thriller
The NASCAR Xfinity Series returns to the high-banks of Talladega Superspeedway for Saturday afternoon’s Ag-Pro 300 (4 p.m. ET on The CW Network, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). The bemouth 2.66-mile track always provides a season highlight reel and has all the trappings for another headline-making show this weekend.
The last six Talladega Xfinity Series races have been won by six different drivers. There are 11 drivers entered this weekend that have never competed in the series at the big track.
Richard Childress Racing’s Jesse Love scored his first career series victory at Talladega last year holding off Riley Herbst and Anthony Alfredo by .141-second. Love led a race best 28 laps – the first time the race winner has led the most laps at Talladega since Tyler Reddick’s work in April 2019.
A couple of noteworthy streaks – Chevrolet has won the last 11 NASCAR Xfinity Series races at Talladega and Richard Childress Racing has won the last six pole positions.
RCR simply has a dominating record at the big circuits winning 10 of the last 19 races at drafting tracks (since 2022) including two races this season already. The team has led 1,152 laps in the last 19 drafting track races – nearly four times that of any other team.
Eight of RCR veteran driver Austin Hill’s 10 career wins have come on drafting-style tracks – Talladega, Daytona and Atlanta. Hill and Love led the most laps in their victories – Love at Daytona and Hill at Atlanta – already this season. Hill’s 734 total laps led on drafting tracks is a series record.
Should he win Saturday, the 31-year old Georgia-native Hill, would become the winningest driver on this style of track – a ninth win breaking the all-time mark he shares with a pair of NASCAR Hall of Famers, the late Dale Earnhardt and Tony Stewart.
Reigning NASCAR Xfinity Series champion, JR Motorsports’ Justin Allgaier takes a commanding 87-point lead over Haas Factory Team’s Sam Mayer into the weekend.
There are four former Talladega race winners in Saturday’s field – Sammy Smith, Jesse Love, Jeb Burton and Aric Almirola. Burton, driver of the No. 27 Jordan Anderson Chevrolet, is the only multi-time Talladega winner among the current series full-timers. He won in 2021 and 2023.
Smith is looking to become the first driver since Justin Haley (2020 season sweep) to win back-to-back Talladega races.
“Although you never know what’s going to happen at Talladega, I’m looking forward to going back there with this No. 8 JR Motorsports team as the defending winners,” said Smith, who was awarded the Rockingham victory last week after Love’s car was disqualified in post-race technical inspection.
“We had a great car in the fall and coming off this past week at Rockingham, we’re even more hungry to keep the momentum rolling and get this Pilot Chevrolet in Victory Lane again.”
Qualifying for the race will be Friday at 5:30 p.m. ET (The CW App). Hill won the pole position for this race last year.

RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin vetoed a bill Tuesday that would allow African American history courses to count toward graduation requirements. The bill would have allowed students to substitute World History 1 or World Georgraphy with African American History or Advanced Placement (AP) African American Studies.
The bill was introduced by Sen. Lamont Bagby (D-Glen Allen) and Del. David Reid (D-Ashburn) in January. The bill passed in the Virginia Senate 30-9, with one abstention. A number of Republicans had voted in favor of the bill although all nine of the bill’s opponents in that chamber were Republicans.
The bill then passed the House of Delegates with an amendment that allowed students the option to substitute World Geography with African American History, instead of substituting World History.
Youngkin had proposed an amendment in March that would have stalled the implementation of the law, stipulating that the 2026 General Assembly would also have to pass the bill in order for the law to effect. That amendment was narrowly rejected by the Senate in am 18-22 vote.
“A thorough sequential study of world history is critical to preparing students for informed citizenship and global awareness,” Youngkin writes in his veto. “… While I am supportive of expanding choices in what elective classes students may take to satisfy graduation requirements, we must ensure that classes that replace others are germane to the comprehensive goal of high school education standards.”

Situated on Albright Grade just outside Lewiston, FreedomNorthwest Arena at the EC Enterprises Motorsports Park is the region’s hub for Monster Truck rallies, demolition derbies, motocross racing and more.
Founder Eric Christiansen established the site four years ago after his company put on events at the Lewiston Roundup Grounds and a venue in Potlatch. Remembered even by nonmotorsports fans for the historic traffic jam its first demolition derby caused in May 2021 as patrons sought entry, the park has since improved its customer processing and parking efficiency to avoid traffic bottlenecks while continuing to draw high levels of attendance. EC Enterprises also expanded its repertoire of events to include novelties like a “horsepower vs. horse power” exhibition timing horses against motorcycles in June 2023 and a pair of sprint boat racing programs scheduled to be held this summer.

Beginning with the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Motor Speedway on May 25, five NASCAR Cup Series races will be shown exclusively on a streaming service for the first time in NASCAR history.
Prime Video will broadcast the Coca-Cola 600, Nashville, Michigan, Mexico City and Pocono in a stretch of races from May 25 to June 22.
Joining lap-by-lap announcer Adam Alexander and former crew chief Steve Letarte in the broadcast booth for Prime Video’s coverage will be NASCAR Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr., who returns to the booth after a one-year absence.
Earnhardt Jr. was a color commentator for NBC from 2018-23, and joins both Prime Video and Turner Sports for a total of 10 races this season.
As fans prepare to switch over to Prime Video to watch Cup Series racing, Earnhardt Jr. expects the transition to be a relatively easy one.
“I don’t know that it’s going to be that big of a transition (for fans),” Earnhardt Jr. said in a virtual news conference on Wednesday. “It’ll probably happen pretty seamlessly and quick.”
In 2022, Prime Video became the exclusive home of “Thursday Night Football.” Earnhardt Jr. says the “TNF” broadcasts are a good representation of what fans can expect from the streaming service’s maiden voyage of NASCAR coverage.
“I would say you can look at the ‘Thursday Night Football’ coverage, and all the bells and whistles,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “That would be a good way to look at how Amazon’s race coverage might look and how it might differ somewhat.”
“At the same time, there will be a lot of things that are very traditional – a three-man booth, the faces you may see. There will be some things that will be expected, but there will be some new technology to show some data and information for our fans that are watching.”
In a similar fashion to how the CW covered the 2024 NASCAR Xfinity Series playoffs in anticipation of every Xfinity Series race being televised on the CW in 2025, Prime Video has given fans a similar opportunity to get familiar with the service. Aside from the Clash, Daytona 500 and the upcoming All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro, Prime Video has been the carrier for Cup Series practice and qualifying through the first 12 races while using Fox Sports’ broadcast talent and production.
Prime Video will continue to cover practice and qualifying for the Cup Series during its five-race stretch of races.
“I’m excited about (the broadcast),” Earnhardt Jr. said. “I think all of the networks push each other to put good products out on Sunday. Amazon will bring some really cool ideas and ways of approaching the sport that will be better. I’m grateful to be a part of that team.”

RFK Racing will welcome fans to its Concord, North Carolina headquarters on Friday, May 23 for its annual Fan Day celebration, just ahead of the iconic Coca-Cola 600 on Memorial Day Weekend. This year’s event will include autograph sessions with RFK drivers, guided shop tours, interactive partner displays, live SiriusXM coverage, and a major partnership announcement that fans won’t want to miss.
This year’s Fan Day will also feature an exciting team announcement scheduled 12:00PM in front of the team museum located at 4600 Roush Place. While details remain under wraps, fans in attendance will be among the first to hear exclusive news that will shape the future of RFK Racing.
The day’s autograph sessions begin at 9:00 a.m. ET with NASCAR Champion Brad Keselowski, followed by a 10:00 a.m. ET session featuring Chris Buescher and Ryan Preece. Both sessions will take place inside the RFK team museum and require a limited-access ticket, available on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition, SiriusXM will broadcast live from Fan Day.
Renowned motorsports artist Bill Patterson will be creating a live painting on-site, beginning at 9:00 a.m. with a final reveal scheduled for around 11:00 a.m. The artwork will capture the energy and spirit of RFK Racing and will later be replicated on merchandise available in the RFK Racing Gift Shop. Proceeds from these items will benefit the Austin Hatcher Foundation, which supports children and families affected by pediatric cancer.
Also returning this year are guided tours of the RFK Campus. Fans will get to experience the full operations of RFK’s shop in a guided tour led by RFK team members. Registration for those tours is available on-site at the designated RFK tent.
RFK’s valued partners will be engaging with fans throughout the day with interactive displays and branded experiences. Participating organizations include BuildSubmarines.com, Castrol, Consumer Cellular, Fastenal, Fifth Third Bank, Ford, Esperion, and Kroger Racing, as well as Celsius, Colgate, Kraft, and Bimbo. Roush Performance, the Checkered Flag Foundation, and Driven will also be featured as part of the day’s activities.
Other Fan Day attractions include driving simulators, tire changing unit, photo opportunities with team trophies, food trucks, access to the team store, live music, and more. Plus, Lake Norman Humane will be coordinating pet adoptions.
In collaboration, Rick Ware Racing will also hold a complimentary fan event in the area adjacent to RFK’s display, that will feature various race vehicles and driver autograph sessions, including its NASCAR and NHRA Top Fuel Dragster cars.
RFK’s team store hours during Coca-Cola 600 week and weekend are as follows:
- Monday-Thursday: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. ET

Behind the scenes, work is already in full swing at all engine manufacturers for 2026, with Red Bull Powertrains and Ford no exception. Mark Rushbrook, boss of Ford Motorsport and Ford Performance, already stated that most internal goals are being met, although he emphasised that it’s impossible to hit all milestones straightaway. Rushbrook also acknowledged that the competition is difficult to gauge, although he shares Christian Horner’s view that Mercedes seems confident.
An equally significant variable for next year, as much as the competition, is the future of Max Verstappen. Although the Dutchman has a contract with Red Bull that runs until the end of 2028, his future remains a major talking point. The four-time world champion has been linked to Mercedes on many occasions – with Toto Wolff admitting in Zandvoort that talks were held until last year’s summer break – and Verstappen has also been linked to Aston Martin, where Adrian Newey is designing the 2026 car and Honda will join as engine supplier.
Verstappen is an important figurehead for Red Bull, and therefore Ford, but Rushbrook makes it clear that Ford’s commitment to the project is not dependent on one individual.
“Everywhere we race we want to have the best team with the best drivers and the best people. But did we sign the deal for any one person in particular? No, because we know that it’s a long-term deal and that those people are going to change. We knew that about Christian Horner, about Adrian Newey, about the drivers and some of them have changed already before we even got on the racetrack,” Rushbrook refers to Newey and Sergio Perez.
“Do we want to see Max stay in the Red Bull-Ford for 2026 and beyond? Of course. He’s a champion. He’s a great person and he elevates the entire team with him, but are we going to run away if Max leaves the team? No. We are committed.”

When asked if he fears Verstappen could leave the team, Rushbrooks smiles: “You like to use the word fear, don’t you? Again, I wouldn’t call it a fear, but we want to take the right actions to make sure that the team with Red Bull Powertrains-Ford continues to win races. As I said, all the people in the programme are an important part of that. So do you take actions to keep a driver like Max in there? You’re already taking those actions anyway because you want to win, but do you also keep a pulse on the people? Of course, so I guess the answer is yes [that we’d like to keep him].”
This is naturally because Rushbrook understands how important Verstappen is for the current competitiveness of the team, in both the drivers’ and the constructors’ championship. “He’s a champion for a reason. Obviously his talent, but also that he wants every part of the team and the programme to be the best it can be.”
Is the current Red Bull form reason for concern?
The bigger picture is that Rushbrook said last year that Ford wants to work with the best teams in all championships it takes part in. At the start of last season, Red Bull was still the dominant force in F1, but this is no longer the case. Is that a concerning prospect for the Blue Oval brand?
“We know that in all forms of motorsports, but especially in Formula 1, there are dynasties of teams that just win, win, and win. But then they go through spells where they don’t, so there’s always that ebb and flow. Do we want Red Bull to still be winning races at the end of last year and this year? Of course, but we know that the team still has great people who are capable of winning consistently.”
Having said that, the 2026 regulations will be the first major technical overhaul in Red Bull’s history that has to be taken on without Adrian Newey. It is another unknown, but Rushbrook makes clear that he has full confidence in the technical team that remains in place. “The feeling is still the same. A few weeks ago, we were in Milton Keynes and met with Pierre Wache and all the technical people. We still believe in the people, in the team that is there and in their ability to win races.”

It’s the unofficial kickoff to summer with the Victoria Day long weekend now just a day away, and Toronto Motorsports Park is ready to welcome thousands through the gate.
The Victoria Day Weekend Spectacular kicks off on Friday and runs until Sunday, and offers no shortage of attractions for all types of racing lovers.
Race Director Neale Armstrong says there’s nothing like drag racing, and says the park is better than ever.
When it comes to the lineup of vehicles taking to the drag strip, there’s no shortage of variety there either.
Armstrong says no matter what you’re looking for, you’ll probably find it.
Outside of his title as Race Director, Armstrong also races himself as he sits behind the wheel of the Northern Warrior Jet Dragster, which boasts a jet engine.
He says it doesn’t take long to make it through a quarter mile.
Passes can be purchased for individual days, or as a weekend bundle for Friday, Saturday and Sunday through Toronto Motorsports Park’s website.
