Giants' full

A large contingent of Giants coaches, front office, scouts and personnel members were in Colorado on Friday. It had nothing to do with a ski vacation.

The 14 members of the Giants were in Boulder to view the pro day (which Colorado billed as “NFL Showcase”) for quarterback Shedeur Sanders and receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter.

The Big Blue band of 14 included head coach Brian Daboll, general manager Joe Schoen, plus a bevy of other executives and coaches.

Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders takes part in passing drills during Colorado’s NFL football pro day Friday, April 4, 2025, in Boulder, Colo. AP

For the Giants, who own the No. 3 overall pick in next month’s NFL draft, Friday could be viewed as somewhat of a dry run for the first round of the draft because, by all indications, when their selection arrives it’s possible both Sanders and Hunter will be available.

Albizu University Announces Launch of Men's and Women's Soccer at Miami Campus

Albizu University is proud to announce the launch of Intercollegiate Athletics with men’s and women’s soccer teams at its Miami Campus, with competition to begin in Fall 2025. The university initiated the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ (NAIA) Pathways to Membership process, enhancing student life and furthering its mission to promote academic and personal growth through inclusive excellence.

“This is a transformational step forward for our Miami Campus,” said Dr. Yianni Vassiliou, Chancellor of Albizu University’s Miami Campus. “Adding intercollegiate athletics—beginning with men’s and women’s soccer—supports our commitment to expanding student engagement, enhancing campus vibrancy, and growing enrollment in a mission-aligned and sustainable way.”

The proposed program anticipates recruiting an initial cohort of 30 student-athletes, supported by a targeted scholarship program and athletic director and coaching staff, with plans for expansion in subsequent years. The initiative complements Albizu’s degrees and academic focus in psychology, health, education, and community-centered professions, drawing from South Florida’s strong soccer culture and demand for mental health, education, behavioral sciences, and culturally responsive education.

Albizu’s administration has identified local field partnerships and a clear implementation timeline, including coaching staff and launching outreach this spring. Juan Carlos (JC) Gonzalez has been hired as the Athletic Director and Men’s & Women’s Head Soccer Coach. The university projects significant enrollment growth from the program, with expectations to double the impact through future athletic offerings.

Horse Creek Academy soccer players sign to college program

AIKEN — Tyler Simpkins and Dominic James first met while playing pee-wee football .

And now the pair will play for the same college soccer team after signing to continue their athletic careers at Columbia International University on May 20.

“Since like ninth grade, just showing up every practice, just the grind that you have,” James said. “And then it all pays off when you finally get that text or that message saying, ‘Hey, we want you to come out.’ It all sums up to something. So just the grind, that’s what it was really.”

The Horse Creek Academy seniors have been the core of the school’s up-and-coming soccer program since it started when they were freshmen. Head coach Adam Lambert said it was their passion for the sport that reignited his love for the game when he was brought on to coach the group.

“It’s amazing the amount of pride I have for these two,” he said. “No one has worked harder in the four years that we’ve had. They’ve only improved themselves. They started from …pretty much an entry level. They’ve done nothing but work in the off-season, in the season, to better themselves. They show up to every practice. I knew they were going to be college athletes. I really did. ”

The pair are more like brothers than teammates, and Simpkins said they always knew they wanted to pick a team they could play together on. Columbia International is a faith-based private school, which was another major factor in their decision to call it home in the fall.

They’ll also both be majoring in sports management.

“For me, it was the Christian aspect of the school,” Simpkins said. “And as someone with faith, that was just a big part of it. And, you know, to further my soccer career, it’s just an amazing thing and I’m so grateful that God is allowing me to do that.”

When thinking about the moments that made the biggest impact for James and Simpkins during their high school careers, two games stood out the most: the Stallions’ first team win and their first playoff victory this year against Lewisville.

Lambert said that as a coach, he’ll never forget the look on Simpkins’ face after they won their first game as a new team and the focus that James brought to the field from day one.

“It was the first game we won in our first game of the high school season,” Simpkins said. “That was something that really jumped the love for the game for me, and this playoff run we had our last few weeks. That was an amazing, amazing experience. Bus rides with the team, winning a playoff game, something that a couple years ago we would’ve never dreamed of. And so to do that with them, even though we didn’t make it all the way, just to experience that with them, something, just 20, 30 years down the line, you still remember that. And that was just an amazing feeling. That’s some of the memories that I’ll take with me for the rest of my life.”

In their final year as Stallions, they helped to lead the team to a region championship during their first year in Region 3-A with an 11-7 record and made their first playoff run, which ended in the second round.

As they prepare to transition to the next phase of their athletic and academic lives, the two are prepared to continue growing side by side while motivating each other to keep achieving new goals.

“The one thing I know I’ll do for him is I’ll make sure to push him whenever he needs it,” James said. “I’ll make sure he grows as much as I try to improve myself. And we’re just going to go down this journey. We’re going to as teammates, as brothers, we’re just going to try to see if we can get where we want to go.”

By Russ Hodges, Sports Editor

ROCHELLE — Fernando Diaz experienced both physical and mental growth throughout his four years with the Rochelle Hub soccer program. Playing all four years at the varsity level, Diaz saw his confidence and his physicality on the field increase as he gained more valuable experience.

That growth resulted in Diaz earning a key leadership role as a starting forward during his senior season, when he posted a career-high 16 goals while serving as a team captain for the Hubs, who won 12 games during the fall. Diaz, who concluded his four-year varsity career at RTHS with 33 goals and 13 assists, will continue his academics and athletics at Kishwaukee College.

“I chose Kish because it’s close to home and I will develop into a more confident and intelligent player,” Diaz said. “Playing soccer at Rochelle taught me to be confident in my decisions and to always push to be better. I’d say I improved in being more physical during my time at Rochelle because I always felt smaller than my opponents, so I had to adjust and be more physical.”

Diaz, whose twin brother Francisco also played four years of varsity soccer at RTHS, scored his first career varsity goals as a freshman in 2021. Diaz, who played midfield and forward during his time with the Hubs, enjoyed a breakout sophomore season in 2022, when he scored nine goals (third most on the team) and dished out four assists (tied for third most). Diaz said he intends to earn his associate’s degree at Kish and pursue a career as a physical therapist.

“I’m looking forward to making more connections with not only the people around me, but hopefully other universities to play for because it’s a dream of mine,” said Diaz, whose two older brothers, Alexis Bueno and Sergio Magallon, both played soccer at Kishwaukee College. “What swayed me to Kish was my brothers’ experiences with the program. I’m hoping that I can help and improve in the midfield and possess the ball. I want to get better at playing with IQ.”

Diaz scored seven goals and led the Hubs with seven assists during his junior season, when he became a team captain for the first time in his career. Diaz kept the captain’s badge as a senior in 2024, helping Rochelle bounce back from a five-win season in 2023. Diaz, who earned an Interstate 8 All-Conference award in 2024, will reunite with teammate Alberto Casillas at Kish.

West Plains' Antonio Baca signs with Blackburn College men's soccer

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – West Plains senior soccer star Antonio Baca signed his NLI with Blackburn College on Tuesday.

The end of the school year is upon us, but more and more star senior athletes are continuing to find their next home to compete in college.

On Tuesday, one of the founding members of the West Plains’ soccer program signed his letter of intent.

Antonio Baca, a team captain for the Wolves, signed with Blackburn College Men’s Soccer.

Blackburn is located in Carlinville, IL. Signing his letter surrounded by friends, family and teammates, Baca understood the importance of the big day.

“It means a lot to me,” Baca said. “I’m very thankful for them. I’m excited, I didn’t expect this many people.”

He spoke on why he felt Blackburn was the place to be.

“It was just a good experience, when I met with the coaches, when they showed up for a showcase,” he said. “I connect with them really well and it just seemed like the right fit.”

As a sophomore the year that West Plains opened its doors, he was one of the founding members of the boys soccer team.

“West Plains prepared me very well, with Coach A and Coach Dodson,” Baca said. “They’ve helped me out a lot, with us being a new school, you know, and making playoffs for two years. I can’t thank them enough. I think they’ve guided me in the right direction to play at the collegiate level, and I’m excited.”
