HONDA Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI), in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), continues to spark positive change in Filipino communities through its support of the imake.wemake:create.innovate.collaborate competition.
Now in its eighth year and with HCPI onboard for the third consecutive cycle, the program once again empowered young Filipino innovators to build real-world solutions aimed at addressing urgent local problems in the country. These entries were more than just school projects — they were working innovations developed to directly help Filipino communities, from marine conservation to sustainable farming and inclusive education.
Held at Ascott Bonifacio Global City in Taguig last April 24 to 25, 2025, the competition culminated in a final presentation and awarding ceremony that showcased 20 of the most promising projects from student teams across the country. The entries were more than just school projects — they were working innovations developed to directly help Filipino communities, from marine conservation to sustainable farming and inclusive education.
Staying true to its global brand philosophy, “The Power of Dreams – How We Move You,” Honda supported the competition by once again sponsoring the Youth Innovation Prize (YIP). This award recognized three winning schools whose projects best embodied innovation, impact, and potential to improve lives. Each winning team received a P200,000 cash prize to help bring their ideas closer to real-world implementation.
Among the standout winners was Bantayan Science High School’s Project Lusai, an Internet of Things-powered unmanned surface vehicle that uses LiDAR and artificial intelligence for seagrass mapping and water quality inspection. The project offers faster and more efficient underwater monitoring compared to traditional methods, supporting marine biodiversity and improving coastal resource management — a timely solution for the country’s fishing-dependent communities.
Lala National High School’s C.R.A.B.-Tech also earned high praise for its automated crab-harvesting system. By using sensors and load cells to sort market-ready mud crabs from juveniles, the device helps improve aquaculture efficiency, supports sustainable harvesting practices, and ensures better incomes for Filipino crab farmers.
Rounding out the top three was Project Salin from Rizal National Science High School — a wearable assistive device that translates speech in English or Tagalog into animated Filipino sign language (FSL). This innovation makes day-to-day communication easier for deaf individuals and has wide-reaching potential for use in schools, government services, and public spaces. It’s a leap forward in accessibility and inclusion for the hearing-impaired community in the Philippines.
The event also featured a keynote from engineer Mark Kennedy Bantugon, a former DOST scholar and inventor of Pili Seal, who shared how his humble beginnings and unrelenting curiosity led to breakthroughs that are now helping the aviation industry. His message to the students was clear: small ideas, when nurtured, can grow into solutions that change lives.
For Honda, these stories are a powerful reminder of why supporting the next generation of changemakers matters. As the challenges facing the country continue to evolve, Honda remains committed to enabling young Filipinos to chase their dreams, solve real problems, and build a better future — not just through mobility, but through meaningful innovation that moves people and society forward.

FIFA, Hawk-Eye innovating the sport through joint venture, the Football Technology Center
The FIFA Club World Cup has not only been “a perfect test case” for trialing innovations that might debut at the men’s FIFA World Cup 26, but it also has marked the grand unveiling of the Football Technology Center AG. The FIFA Club World Cup has not only been “a perfect test case” for trialing innovations that might debut at the men’s FIFA World Cup 26, but it also has marked the grand unveiling of the Football Technology Center AG. That’s the joint venture created last November by FIFA and Hawk-Eye Innovations with an initial charge of assisting referees and automating data collection.
FIFA and Sony-owned Hawk-Eye first debuted Semi-Automated Offsides Technology at the Qatar World Cup in 2022, and now it has created an enhanced version of it. Only calls in which a player is within 10 centimeters of the offsides line require manual oversight from an official. Also at this tournament, the tabulation of event data — everything from shots, passes, corner kicks and the like — has been automated with computer vision algorithms, supplanting what historically had always been a very manual process.
Early feedback has been positive, putting those innovations on track for an appearance at next year’s tournament. The quadrennial World Cup typically serves as a debut for new tech. Goal-line technology first appeared in 2014, VAR in 2018 and SAOT in 2022.
“We recognize that, in order to do stuff which is pretty game-changing, you have to do it on a two-, three-, four-year cycle,” Rufus Hack, the CEO of Sony’s sports businesses, told SBJ. “It doesn’t take a year to develop the technology, to implement it, to refine it, to test it, to introduce it. And so we came on this concept of, let’s do an eight-year joint venture where, effectively, they put in some of their IP, some of their technology, their football expertise. We put in people, our technology expertise, our learnings from other sport.”
The vision of the FTC
The Football Technology Center is based in Zurich, like FIFA, and relies on dedicated personnel from both FIFA and Hawk-Eye. In lieu of a CEO, it is steered by a board of directors, consisting of Hawk-Eye’s Hack and Managing Dir Ben Crossing and FIFA’s Dir of Innovation Johannes Holzmüller and Technical Director Steve Martens. There is also a separate joint operational management committee with equal representation from both entities.
“We see this as potentially the Football Technology Center creating new football technologies, assets and IP, which then can potentially be commercialized-slash-distributed to the rest of the sport,” Hack said. “Ultimately, FIFA are very much about looking to democratize sports technology down to the member associations,” referring to the 211 countries and territories across six continents that are represented by FIFA.
“For us, this is less about a significant revenue opportunity of being able to create new products,” he added. “It’s more about being able to be thought leaders and sitting side by side with FIFA, who are effectively the guardians of football technology in the game, to be able to do these new innovations, and then potentially working together to distribute some of that for the rest of the football community.”
Hawk-Eye’s cameras and algorithms capture data from 29 points on the human body, so a player’s limbs, hands and feet are fully tracked. That generates millions of datapoints per game, but FIFA sought practical use of it.
“We have high-quality data available, but at the end of the day, we also want to have valuable information — an outcome, not only for officiating, but also for other areas,” Holzmüller said. “We needed to have some vehicle where we can develop and explore how this data can be used in the future.”
The lead time for many of these projects is long, but there other avenues that can be explored. For instance, Hack said it might be possible in the future to use technology to determine whether that ball has gone out of bounds or whether it struck a player’s hand or other part of the body.
“We believe in these big, long-term strategic partnerships,” Hack said. “We believe it provides a much better opportunity for the rightsholder and partner to co-invest alongside each other and genuinely feels like a partnership, rather than that buyer/supplier relationship.”

Online sports betting drives economic transformation in California
The rise of online sports betting in California is reshaping the state’s economic landscape. With potential tax revenues and business growth, this emerging industry offers significant opportunities. The rise of online sports betting in California is reshaping the state’s economic landscape. With potential tax revenues and business growth, this emerging industry offers significant opportunities. Understanding its impact is crucial for stakeholders and policymakers.
In recent years, the popularity of California Sportsbooks has surged, driven by the convenience and accessibility of online platforms. As more Californians engage in sports betting, it becomes essential to explore how this trend influences the state’s economy. The shift towards digital wagering reflects broader changes in consumer behavior and presents both challenges and opportunities for economic development.
Tax revenue potential from online sports betting
Legalizing online sports betting in California could generate substantial tax revenues. With its large population and tech-savvy demographic, the state is well-positioned to benefit financially. Licensing fees and gambling taxes could provide significant funds for state programs and infrastructure projects. This influx of revenue could help address budget deficits and enhance public services.
Beyond direct tax revenues, the online sports betting market could attract investments from major gaming companies. This would stimulate economic growth and create jobs in various sectors, including tech support, marketing, and customer service. By establishing a fair taxation system, California can balance regulatory oversight with economic incentives, fostering a sustainable environment for this industry.
Comparative analysis with other states that have legalized online sports betting shows promising revenue trajectories. States like New Jersey and Pennsylvania have reported significant tax windfalls, with monthly revenues often exceeding initial projections. California’s market size suggests even greater potential, with experts estimating annual tax revenues could reach billions once the market matures. These funds could be strategically allocated to education, healthcare, and problem gambling prevention programs, creating a sustainable cycle of social benefit.
Impact on local businesses and industries
The expansion of online sports betting has implications for local businesses across California. As residents engage with digital platforms, industries such as hospitality and technology stand to benefit. Bars and restaurants may see increased patronage during major sports events, while tech firms specializing in software and cybersecurity can support the growing online gambling sector.
Additionally, advertising agencies and media companies might experience increased demand as betting platforms seek to capture market share through targeted campaigns. This interconnected web of industries contributes to a dynamic economic environment fueled by online sports betting activities.
The ripple effect extends to professional sports organizations and venues within California. Local teams could benefit from increased fan engagement and sponsorship opportunities, while stadiums and arenas might see enhanced revenue through partnerships with betting operators. This symbiotic relationship between sports betting and athletic entertainment creates new revenue streams for existing sports infrastructure, potentially funding facility improvements and community programs.
The role of betting platforms in California
Betting platforms are central to California’s online sports betting ecosystem. They facilitate wagering and act as technological hubs that drive innovation and efficiency. By offering user-friendly interfaces and diverse betting options, these platforms cater to a wide range of preferences among bettors.
Robust betting platforms help establish trust among consumers by ensuring transparency and fairness in transactions. As these platforms evolve, they enhance user experience while safeguarding against fraudulent activities through advanced security measures. Collaboration between betting platforms and regulatory bodies is essential for maintaining ethical standards and promoting responsible gambling practices.
Future economic outlook for online sports betting
The future economic outlook for online sports betting in California appears promising. If current trends continue, substantial revenue streams could flow into state coffers from taxation and industry-driven investments. As more Californians embrace digital wagering, consumer spending patterns may shift towards entertainment-related goods and services.
This shift could impact retail sectors catering to bettors’ needs, such as sports merchandise retailers and travel agencies offering packages around major tournaments. While the rise of online sports betting presents opportunities, it is important to assess potential risks alongside rewards to make informed projections about its statewide impact.

In the northern hemisphere, it’s hard to not spend the winter in a state of slumbering sloth, just waiting for sunshine and good times to start again. Conveniently, Prime Day fitness tracker deals (all four days of them) drop right in the middle of summer, which makes this a great time to pick up the smartwatch or smart ring that you just didn’t have the cash for at Christmas.
This year, you have four whole days to shop the Amazon deals, but if you don’t want to take that much time, I’ve highlighted the sales on some of our favorite fitness trackers and smart rings. Not a subscriber yet? Perhaps our list of the best Amazon Prime Perks can convince you to sign up. Deal hunters should also check out our Best Amazon Prime Day Deals roundup and Prime Day liveblog.
WIRED Featured Deals
Fitness Tracker Deals
The Best Smart Ring
As you might expect with my job, I am frequently asked what fitness tracker to get, and this year, more often than not, I have told people to just buy an Oura Ring 4 (9/10, WIRED Recommends) . You don’t have to wear it on your wrist, the battery life is longer than most trackers, and Oura issues interesting, meaningful software updates regularly. This is the first time it’s gone on sale, and you should get it.
The Best Fitness Tracker
Fitbit has faced pretty stiff competition over the years (most notably from the Apple Watch), but its flagship Charge line is still the best overall fitness tracker for the money. Even tracking multiple activities a day, the battery lasts over a week. The updated app looks great, and multiple Google integrations make the Fitbit Charge 6 (7/10, WIRED Recommends) easier to use than ever.
The Best If You Have an iPhone
The Apple Watch Series 10 is the best fitness tracker for iPhone users. It still doesn’t have blood oxygen sensing due to a patent dispute, but it’s otherwise a solid fitness tracker. The standout feature is sleep apnea notifications. The watch uses an accelerometer and machine learning to check if you have breathing disturbances at night. The Series 10 is also thinner, lighter, easier to wear, and charges faster than previous models.
The Best Kids’ Watch
I have personally convinced many parents in my life to buy the Fitbit Ace LTE (7/10, WIRED Recommends) for their kids. It’s a Fitbit, so it works even if one parent is Android and the other is Apple (if so, why?), and the $10/month subscription includes data, so you don’t need to fuss with adding service to your cell plan. Fitbit Arcade incentivizes my kids to keep their watches on and charged, and I like Google’s included kids’ safety features.
A Great Garmin
Garmin is known for its Forerunner series of running watches. The Forerunner 255 (8/10, WIRED Recommends) is the older version of the Forerunner 265 that we recommend in our roundup, but Garmins age well, and the older version does have some features to recommend it over the newer one, like better battery life.
The Cheapest Tracker You Should Buy
It may be cheap, but the Amazfit Active 2 (6/10, WIRED Reviewed) is no slouch on the sensor front with a photo plethysmography (PPG) sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, barometric altimeter, ambient light, and temperature sensor to track your sleep, heart rate, and blood oxygen saturation. It also boasts tons of workout modes, long battery life, and 5 ATM water resistance.
The Most Affordable Apple Watch
While it’s not the most exciting Apple watch, the SE series is a cheapest way to try out an Apple fitness tracker. The SE uses watchOS 11, which can connect to the Vitals app, which makes it easy to check your heart rate and respiration in a dashboard without hunting through the Health or Fitness apps. It has the last S8 chip, which is what the Series 8 has, and features like Crash Detection to call your emergency contact and emergency responders if you’ve been in a car accident. The SE series doesn’t have the latest health features, like the ability to check your skin temperature and the display is noticeably smaller than Apple’s other options, but for the price this is hard to beat, especially on sale.
A No-Subscription Smart Ring
While the Oura Ring 4 is undoubtedly the champion of smart rings, you’ll be paying $8 a month if you want the full experience. The Ultrahuman Ring Air (7/10, WIRED Recommends), though, comes with an included “lifetime subscription,” meaning you’ll have full access to your data and analytics when you pick one of these up. It’s the first time the price has dropped this low too, so if ever there was a time, it’s now.
A Stylish Garmin
Most Garmin watches aren’t likely to win any beauty prizes—they’re chunky, with an emphasis on the technical over aesthetic. The Lily 2 is the exception. It’s Garmin that looks more like, well, a nice watch. You can even get it with a leather band. It’s one of the smallest Garmins and battery life is on the short side—3 to 4 days. But it has a Pulse Ox sensor, a beautiful Corning Gorilla Glass lens, a metal bezel, and standard Garmin features like Body Battery and fall detection.

Electronic Communication by Players Clarified in High School Softball

No player shall be allowed to transmit or record audio or video from the playing surface in high school softball. This new language in Rule 1-8-6 of the NFHS Softball Rules Book further clarifies the use of electronic devices and what is permitted in the sport after language was added last year to allow for electronic communication for coaching purposes.
This change was the highlight of the NFHS Softball Rules Committee’s rules recommendations as a result of the committee’s annual rules meeting held June 15-17 at The Alexander hotel in Indianapolis. The NFHS Board of Directors subsequently approved the rules changes to take effect next year.
“While increased media exposure has positively influenced the growth and visibility of softball, the committee determined that the potential risks associated with players transmitting or recording audio or video through devices during live play outweighed the benefits,” said Sandy Searcy, NFHS director of sports and liaison to the Softball Rules Committee. “As wearable technology continues to evolve, the committee believed it was essential to establish clear guidelines regarding the permissible use of such devices to ensure the safety and integrity of the game.”
The proper uniform for an umpire was adjusted in Rule 10-4-2, noting that ‘charcoal gray’ slacks were allowed, instead of ‘heather gray.’
“Manufacturers have ceased production of heather gray umpire pants, and this update will help guide umpires toward selecting pant options that are actively being produced and readily available,” Searcy said.
Finally, the 2026 Softball Rules Book will include a reformatted Rule 8 for improved clarity and comprehension. Longer sections were separated, and additional article references were added to penalties and effects.
A complete listing of the softball rules changes will be available on the NFHS website at www.nfhs.org. Click on “Sports” at the top of the home page and select “Softball.”
According to the most recent NFHS High School Athletics Participation Survey, 345,451 girls in 15,635 high schools played fast-pitch softball in 2023-24 making it the fifth-most popular girls sport, while an additional 6,107 girls participated in slow-pitch softball.
