Correa, a dual citizen of Ecuador and the United States, has been racing in European junior formula series as well as in sports cars since 2016.

INDIANAPOLIS — Three-time Formula 2 podium finisher Juan Manuel Correa is heading stateside after competing in Europe for the better part of nine seasons.

The 25-year-old driver, who holds dual citizenship in Ecuador and the United States, has signed with HMD Motorsports to replace the recently departed American driver Bryce Aron in the No. 39 Indy NXT entry in the upcoming race on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.

He will also compete in two oval tests and at least seven event weekends, according to Wednesday’s press release.

“I’m incredibly excited to join the HMD Motorsports family and compete in Indy NXT in 2025,” Correa said. “This opportunity is a huge step in my career, and I’m looking forward to applying everything I’ve learned in my previous experiences to the upcoming races.”

Correa’s junior formula career began in Italian Formula 4 in 2016, where he won three races and finished sixth in the championship. He also competed in German Formula 4 that same year, scoring one podium at Motorsport Arena Oschersleben.

By 2018, Correa was competing in the GP3 Series, which is now known as Formula 3. While he did not score any podiums, he did score points in over half of the races and finished 12th in points.

In 2019, Correa moved up to the Formula 2 championship with Charouz. He scored two podiums, both second place finishes, in Azerbaijan and France. However, his season was cut short after he was involved in a terrifying crash at Spa-Francorchamps. The accident caused life-threatening injuries to Correa and also killed fellow driver Anthoine Hubert.

The accident not only sidelined Correa for the rest of the 2019 F2 season but also forced him to miss the entire 2020 racing season due to injury. He eventually returned to the cockpit in 2021, driving in the Formula 3 Championship for ART Grand Prix. He scored one podium during his return to F3, finishing second at Zandvoort in 2022.

Correa returned to Formula 2 at the end of 2022 before returning full time in 2023. In 2024, Correa once again raced in F2, scoring one podium, a third-place finish in Spain.

In addition to his junior formula background, Correa has been dabbling in sports cars since 2023. He ran a partial schedule in the World Endurance Championship with Prema Racing in 2023, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and made an IMSA start earlier this year at Sebring in the LMP2 class.

“We are thrilled to welcome Juan Manuel Correa to HMD,” HMD Motorsports Team President Mike Maurini said. “We have been in contact for a while, and when we crossed paths last week at Barber Motorsports Park, I had asked if he was interested in racing in Indy NXT. Less than 24 hours later a deal was done, and 36 hours later, he was on a plane to Indy.”

Indy NXT is set for a doubleheader at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course on May 9 and 10 as support races during the Sonsio Grand Prix weekend for the IndyCar Series.

The NASCAR Cup Series will make its debut at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit in Mexico City for nearly 90 minutes of practice Friday.

Cup cars will be on track for a 50-minute session starting at 4:05 p.m. ET and then another 25-minute session on the 15-turn, 2.42-mile road course at 5:30 p.m.

Because of two planes that were grounded Thursday in Charlotte, North Carolina, and delayed several teams, NASCAR adjusted the Friday schedule by moving up a 50-lap NASCAR Mexico Series race and shifting the Cup practices later. Xfinity practice also was moved to Saturday.

Some exercised in an oxygen-deprived setting, as seen by Tyler Reddick on a bike at the Toyota Performance Center, and a few slept in hypoxic tents.

Qualifying will be held Saturday at the Mexico City track, which will play host to the first Cup points race in series history Sunday.

What’s Happening?

Matt Lewis, a producer for iRacing’s upcoming console game, NASCAR ’25, recently answered fans’ questions about the game as part of a Discord Q&A on Thursday. Here are some key takeaways from that Q&A.

What’s Happening?

Since late 2023, NASCAR fans have been waiting for the release of iRacing’s upcoming NASCAR console game. In…

  • Though they have yet to set a release date for NASCAR ’25, as expected, the game will be released during the playoffs in late September or early October. We previously theorized that this could be the case, as five of the past six NASCAR games were released around that time.
  • The game will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. Notably, it will not be released on the previous generation of consoles. This confirmation also clarifies that it will be available on PC, something non-simulation racing game fans were worried about.
  • NASCAR ’25 will have an online mode featuring 36 (Truck Series) to 40 (Cup Series) entry fields and private lobbies. Alongside a release date, more information and visuals, such as in-game screenshots, series rosters, and gameplay footage, will be released in July and August.
  • The roster includes roughly 190 drivers across the three NASCAR National Series: Truck, Xfinity, and Cup, alongside the ARCA Menards Series. With a roster this big, the game will have over 400 paint schemes.
  • We have covered all the news and rumors about NASCAR ’25 and its development via the article linked above.

What’s Happening?

Ahead of perhaps the most important race weekend of the 2025 season, travel issues have forced NASCAR to make crucial schedule changes to this weekend’s race at Mexico City’s Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

Racing Electronics Push DownRacing Electronics Push Down

  • Thursday afternoon, two flights leaving Charlotte Douglas International Airport failed to take off. As a result, drivers, crew members, and NASCAR personnel onboard were forced to find an alternative route to Mexico City, with some headed to Atlanta to catch a flight further south.
  • With their hands tied, NASCAR officials decided to move NASCAR Xfinity Series practice from Friday afternoon to Saturday morning. Furthermore, NASCAR is changing the practice schedule from two sessions to one 50-minute session at 11:05 a.m. ET.
  • The NASCAR Cup Series will still have its two sessions on Friday afternoon. However, they are pushing back both sessions to later in the afternoon. Now, session one will be at 4:05 p.m. ET, and session two 5:30 p.m. ET.
  • Nonetheless, for the Xfinity Series, what was supposed to be 75 minutes worth of practice is now just 50. The loss of practice time, while necessary given the circumstances, will be crucial for these drivers, as the NASCAR Xfinity Series has not raced at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez since 2008.

During the Thunder Valley Nationals, Erica Enders had her fourth qualifying run disqualified due to a rule infraction that involved the rear wheels on her Camaro. The reason given was the wheels failed to meet NHRA’s approved specifications for Pro Stock. This incurred a 100-point deduction, a $5,000 fine, and kicked off a firestorm on social media.

After the event, the NHRA released the following revised statement to add clarity to the situation from its perspective:

Things get interesting when Richard Freeman, owner of Elite Motorsports, dropped his response in the comments section of the NHRA’s post on Facebook:

Where this starts to get sticky is the fact that the NHRA does have the final say on how rules are interpreted. Pro Stock is a brutally competitive class, so successful teams like Elite Motorsports are going to look at the rulebook and try to find ways to improve their program; that’s what top-tier teams do. The problem is, the NHRA feels like this conflicts with how the rules are written.

We will continue to follow this story and provide updates as they develop.

A bit of trouble for the NASCAR industry on the way to Mexico City. Two chartered flights have been held up in Charlotte. On Wednesday this week, Dale Earnhardt Jr. had to change his travel plans after his plane was held up in another country.

Today is the day that drivers and team members are expected to arrive in Mexico City for the NASCAR weekend. It is a historic race weekend with the first international points race for the Cup Series since the 1958 season. So, all eyes are on the sport as they embark on this journey.

Ryan Ellis, driver of the No. 71 Chevy for DGM Racing, posted a photo from the Charlotte airport. Firefighters are seen on the tarmac as NASCAR industry members walk off the plane.

Ellis reported in a prior tweet that upon attempting takeoff, the “plane made a small boom” and returned to its gate. So, not an ideal start to the weekend for these NASCAR drivers and team members.

Matt Weaver of Sportsnaut and The Sporting News reported that passengers on the flight were told by the captain that “engine 2 blew.” The captain suspected a bird had possibly flown into the engine just as the plane attempted to take off. Scary situation.

So, the NASCAR Mexico City weekend is on hold for these industry members. While they have run into a bit of trouble, NASCAR has made arrangements for another flight.

NASCAR Mexico City weekend off to rough start with travel woes

Currently, NASCAR Is trying to find an alternative flight for the personnel left in Charlotte to get to Mexico City. Finding a last-minute international flight is not the easiest thing to do. However, the weekend can’t go on without these drivers and team members at the track.

Tomorrow is when the action starts. There will be extensive practice sessions for both the Cup and Xfinity Series. This is a new track for the field. Even drivers who competed in the Xfinity Series races in Mexico City years ago, they will not necessarily recognize the configuration being used this weekend, although it is similar.

The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez is a historic venue that hosts all kinds of races throughout the year. Daniel Suárez is used to racing on the oval back in his NASCAR Mexico Series days. F1 races at the track on a yearly basis, but that is not the exact same configuration that NASCAR will compete on.

There are a lot of questions right now around the weekend. The main one at the moment is when these drivers and teams will actually get to the city and settle in. Then there is the altitude change. Mexico City sits 7,500 feet above sea level, and these NASCAR drivers are not used to that kind of elevation. The air will be thinner, and blood oxygen levels will be lower than the drivers are used to.

Drivers like Tyler Reddick have been doing what they can to train for the intense altitude difference. While others have somewhat shrugged it off with it being only a one-time thing this season. We will see if those who have prepared the most gain an advantage on the field or not.
