Local hero Daniel Suarez takes dramatic last to first NASCAR Xfinity Mexico win

Published

on

Daniel Suarez did something incredible on Saturday, earning a dramatic victory in the NASCAR Xfinity Series’ long-awaited return to Mexico City. He did it all in a backup car, starting 39th before steadily marching through the field.

“This is very special,” said Suarez. “This is very, very special to be here in front of my people. All these people have supported me for many, many years. They have loved me since my NASCAR Mexico days. And now we’re fighting with the big boys, so it feels good.”

The final stage went green with 19 laps to go and that’s when the pivotal moment came. Suarez, who restarted fourth, sent it on the outside in a three-wide move for the lead into Turn 1. He took the top spot by force as chaos ensued behind him. The two fastest cars all day were heavily damaged as both Connor Zilisch and Ty Gibbs crashed. Several other drivers were collected in the melee through Turns 1 and 2 while Suarez escaped unscathed.

Watch: Zilisch, Gibbs, others involved in multiple wrecks to begin final stage

The following restart was much cleaner as Suarez held onto the top spot. Despite the damage, Zilisch drove his wounded car back through the field, setting the fastest lap of all drivers. Suarez was cruising, but of course, a caution with seven laps to go for an incident involving Jesse Love set-up a mad dash to the finish.

Suarez had to hold on in another hectic restart with Gray drawing even with him, slamming doors through Turns 1 and 2. Suarez ran off into the grass due to the contact, but held onto the race lead. Gray never let him get too far away, shadowing him throughout the closing laps. On the final lap, Gray went for a mega lunge into the final corner, but kept it clean as Suarez escaped with the victory in hand.

Gray finished second, Austin Hill third, Christian Eckes fourth, and Zilisch fifth. William Sawalich finished sixth, Austin Green seventh, Jeb Burton eighth, Harrison Burton ninth, and Sammy Smith tenth.

The race got underway with Zilisch starting from pole position. Suarez did not wait to begin his march, quickly moving from 39th to 25th by the time the first caution flew on Lap 3. That was for Sam Mayer, who spun into the barriers.

Zilisch lost the lead after getting bumped out of the way, but he quickly rebounded as a tense fight for the lead played out between himself and Gibbs. They, along with several other frontrunners chose to short-pit, choosing track position over stage points. Carson Kvapil was among those who stayed out, winning Stage 1 win.

Several drivers suffered mechanical issues in the opening stage, including Justin Allgaier Jeremy Clements, and 2020 NASCAR Mexico champion Ruben Rovelo.

At the beginning of Stage 2, Suarez quickly moved from seventh to third with a bold lunge into Turn 1, but it was Zilisch was the driver in control of the race.

There were various single-car spins, but no cautions for cause during the second stage. Of note, Hill suffered a cut tire that put him to the tail-end of the lead lap. As drivers again chose to short-pit, Christopher Bell’s engine blew while running third. He limped into the pits and pulled to the side, allowing the stage to end under green flag conditions.

Sammy Smith claimed the Stage 2 win as Zilisch and Gibbs had a dramatic race off pit road, running side-by-side through the pit exit. Zilisch prevailed, but at the start of the final stage, both he and Gibbs would see their shot at a win slip away through the previously mentioned chaos.

After Suarez’s three-wide move to take the lead with 19 laps to go, he never relinquished the top spot again. This is his first Xfinity winning the 2016 finale at Homestead, where he also won the championship. He now has four career victories in the Xfinity Series.

Hendrick engineer to become Ross Chastain’s new crew chief in 2026

Published

on

There will be a change atop the pit box for the No. 1 Trackhouse Racing Team Chevrolet next season. Brandon McSwain, who has worked as an engineer for the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports team for the past six years, will replace Phil Surgen.

Chastain has worked with Surgen since the 2021 season when he still drove for Chip Ganassi Racing, and has won all six of his Cup races with the same crew chief. The duo nearly won the 2022 Cup Series championship, and most recently earned a crown jewel victory in the 2025 Coca-Cola 600.

They made the playoffs in three of the last four years, and ended the 2025 season tenth in the final championship standings.

Surgen will transition to a new role within the organization, per Trackhouse.

McSwain has limited crew chief experience, filling in for Rudy Fugle at HMS on a few occasions. The No. 24 Chevrolet of Byron has made it all the way to the Championship 4 in the last three consecutive years.

This continues a trend at Trackhouse as they continue to make internal changes, including crew member swaps and a new president of racing operations. The organization has struggled overall this year in comparison to previous seasons, excluding the dominance of Shane van Gisbergen on road and street courses.

McSwain was also a part of JR Motorsports before joining Hendrick, and was a member of the 2017 and 2018 championship-winning team with Byron and then Tyler Reddick.

Results From Last Week’s Eastern States Weekend

Last Thursday night, Orange County Fair Speedway hosted the Short Track Super Series modified division in the Hard Clay Finale. Mat Williamson was the Hot Lap Hero with a 20.904-second fast time. The six heat race winners for the 61 STSS modifieds that signed in were Matt Sheppard, Chris Raabe, Mat Williamson, Brian Calabrese, Danny Bouc, and 2025 O.C.F.S. modified track champion Jack Lehner. In the 50-lap feature, Matt Sheppard scored the win over Mat Williamson and Anthony Perrego. Matt Sheppard was also crowned the STSS North Region champion.

On Friday night, the Eastern States 50 for the sportsman division saw Jared LaBagh score the win, with Tyler Peet and A.J. Albreada filling the podium. Mat Williamson earned the pole position for the 358-modified Eastern States 100, with Matt Sheppard, Noah Walker, Brian Calabrese, Matt Stangle, and Jessica Friesen locking in the top six starting positions.

Also on Friday, Kaden Honeycutt was at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia competing in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Driving the Halmar-Friesen Racing number 52, Honeycutt started fifth, finished stage one in seventh, stage two in eighth, and stage three in second.

Saturday’s running of the Eastern States 100 for the 358-modified division took place on a fast and smooth track. In a thrilling finish, Anthony Perrego beat Mat Williamson to the line by only 0.056 seconds. Jessica Friesen, Felix Roy, and Brian Calabrese rounded out the top five. Jack Lehner, in the Nelson Motorsports No. 85, finished ninth.

Jessica Friesen of Sprakers had an outstanding run. After time-trialing sixth, she ran in the top five for the first half of the race and moved into second place behind Perrego when Matt Sheppard pitted around lap 95. Williamson, who had pitted earlier, charged through the field and passed Friesen in the closing laps. A top-three finish in the ESW 100 is a major accomplishment for Friesen, who runs a limited schedule.

On Sunday, Alex “Kid Rocket” Yankowski, the 21-year-old 2024 & 2025 Fonda modified champion, started on the outside of the front row and went on to claim his first victory in the iconic Eastern States-Will Cagle 200, collecting the $24,000 check. Tyler Dippel and Peter Britten filled the podium. Our other area drivers had strong showings: Jack Lehner finished fourth, Marc Johnson sixth, Max McLaughlin seventh, and Anthony Perrego eighth.

Overall, our area drivers had a very good showing at the 64th Eastern States Weekend, a weekend that they can all be proud of.

‘C’mon, come and get it’: Gordon on Larson chasing his championship count

Published

on

Jeff Gordon was all too happy to welcome Kyle Larson into the multi-time NASCAR Cup Series championship club on Sunday afternoon at Phoenix Raceway.

Gordon, the vice chairman of Hendrick Motorsports, celebrated with, and for, Larson in multiple ways. The first being as a teammate and friend, and the second as one of the drivers that Larson admitted he would like to match, if not surpass, one day in the champions list. Gordon has four championships, and Tony Stewart, the other driver Larson mentioned, has three.

Larson is now a two-time champion.

“I have the utmost respect for his abilities behind the wheel, and couldn’t be (prouder) of the effort that Rick [Hendrick] put into bringing him to Hendrick Motorsports,” Gordon said. “I’ve known Kyle for many, many years, watching him race sprint cars, and I always knew that if you can put him behind the wheel of a Hendrick Motorsports car, he’d do special things. I also believe that records and championships, they’re made to be broken.

“As long as he’s on our team, I want him to win 10.”

Hendrick signed Larson to drive the No. 5 Chevrolet beginning with the 2021 season. In the first year of their partnership, Larson won 10 points races plus the All-Star Race and the championship. Over the following three years, Larson, Cliff Daniels, and the team won 13 races while finishing seventh, second, and sixth in the championship.

It has taken Larson five years with Hendrick Motorsports to win two championships and 26 races.

“He and I have a good relationship because I think being from California, close to one another with Elk Grove and Vallejo, and the sprint car stuff,” Gordon said. “We’ve built a good friendship. You motivate people in different ways. He motivates himself in measuring and looking at what’s the next goal, the trophy, the championship. I use it for him, too.

“I’m like, ‘Buddy, you got three to go. You’re only at one. You got to get to two before you can get to three and before you can get to four.’ We have a standing joke about, ‘C’mon, come and get it.’ I hope he gets it and plenty more after that.”

Phoenix Raceway hosted the Cup Series championship for the sixth time on Sunday. Hendrick Motorsports won three of the six championships decided there between Chase Elliott (2020) and Larson (2021, 2025).

Pulaski County Motorsports Park set to open in 2026

Pulaski County logoRacing will Return to the Speedway and Dragway

Pulaski County, Virginia – The Pulaski County Sports & Entertainment Authority announced today that it plans to reopen Pulaski County Motorsports Park and bring racing back to both the speedway and dragway for the 2026 season. Over the past several months, the Authority and the County’s Sports and Entertainment Department have evaluated opportunities to revive racing, working closely with members of the local racing community, as well as representatives from NASCAR, the IHRA, and others.

Organizers plan to host a combination of local divisions and regional touring series events at the speedway with a schedule that is anticipated to start next April and conclude in September of 2026. A similar April–September schedule is being planned for the local drag racing community. Complete schedules will be released for both the speedway and drag way by the end of this year.

“Since the first time that I experienced the Pulaski County Motorsports Park, I felt an obligation to see if we could resume racing there,” said Tim Miller, Executive Director of the Pulaski County Sports & Entertainment Authority. “I can’t imagine having a world-class facility like this and not making an effort to make the most of it.”

Previously owned by the Shelor Team and known as the Motor Mile Speedway, the facility was graciously donated to Pulaski County by David Hagan and Larry Shelor in 2024, along with historic Calfee Park. The gift of these two world-class and storied facilities was part of the impetus for the Board of Supervisors to strategically form the Pulaski County Sports & Entertainment Authority, which was created in July 2024, and is responsible for the advancement of the County’s sports and entertainment initiatives and venues.

“The donation of the Pulaski County Motorsports Park and historic Calfee Park was a watershed moment for Pulaski County”, stated Jonathan D. Sweet, County Administrator. “Not only was it an incredibly generous gift, but these additional assets will allow us to better realize our vision for creating a sports and entertainment enterprise and to successfully compete in the sports tourism industry, which will ultimately be transformational on multiple levels.”

The Pulaski County Motorsports Park first opened in 1952. Originally a dirt track, the oval was paved in 1988 and began to host competitive NASCAR sanctioned races. The drag way was constructed in 2005, and is the home track of four-time NHRA World Funny Car champion Matt Hagan. It has hosted a number of local, regional and national events over the years. The last race was held in July 2023 when the SRX Series was featured on ESPN’s Thursday Night Thunder.

The track has been inactive since that time.

Additional details of the 2026 season, including divisions, dates, prize money, and touring events will be announced in the coming weeks.

About the Pulaski County Sports & Entertainment Authority

The Pulaski County Sports & Entertainment Authority was created in 2024 in order to oversee a growing list of facilities, including historic Calfee Park, the Pulaski County Motorsports Park, and the new Pulaski County Sportsplex, and to establish the Pulaski County as a premier destination for sports and entertainment, where world-class facilities, outdoor recreation and adventure, and rich culture combine to help create memorable experiences that drive economic growth.

About the Pulaski County Motorsports Park

The Pulaski County Motorsports Park is a 152-acre motorsports complex featuring a 0.416-mile paved oval racetrack and a 1/8-mile paved drag strip. Located in Pulaski County, Virginia, the facility has gone by several names in the past including Pulaski County Speedway, New River Valley Speedway, and Motor Mile Speedway. It was purchased by the Shelor Team in 2004 and later gifted to Pulaski County in April 2024.
