Women’s Basketball at Arizona
NAU women’s basketball lost to the University of Arizona Wildcats, 87-76, on Nov. 21 in Tucson, Arizona.
The Lumberjacks took an early lead with a three-point jumper by redshirt freshman guard Naomi White, who scored a career-high of 28 points.
The Wildcats clawed their way back but couldn’t close the gap in the first quarter, as the Lumberjacks went into the break ahead, 15-14.
Redshirt junior guard Tanyuel Welch led the charge for the Wildcats to open the second quarter. Her performance early on marked a turning point for the game as the Lumberjacks could not regain control of the lead, and the Wildcats ran away with the game, steadily holding their 11-point margin.
The Lumberjacks will face the University of Northern Iowa Panthers next in the UNLV Thanksgiving Turkey Tip-Off in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Women’s Volleyball at Northern Colorado
NAU women’s volleyball beat the University of Northern Colorado Bears, 3- 1, on Nov. 21 in Greeley, Colorado.
The top-ranked Lumberjacks traded points with their Big Sky opponent in a first set that had no clear leader, but a kill from redshirt junior outside hitter Hanah Stoddard ended the set in the Lumberjacks’ favor.
The second set was a close one as well. The Bears held a steady lead, but a kill by freshman right side hitter Laney Wilson off an assist by junior setter Ella Hosfeld gave the Lumberjacks the push needed to close out the set, 26-24.
The Bears took the third set in a 25-16 victory, the largest set margin of the game. They held a steady lead for most of the set, seeing only short runs from the Lumberjacks that were halted by self-inflicted errors.
An attack error by the Bears propelled the Lumberjacks forward in the fourth set. A kill from senior outside hitter Kylie Moran, assisted by senior setter Keira Hall, gave them a 25-19 victory, ending the match.
Football at Weber State
NAU football lost to their Big Sky rival, the Weber State University Wildcats, 48-28, on Nov. 22 in Ogden, Utah, in the Red Rock Rivalry game.
The Wildcats opened the game with a 24-yard touchdown run by senior running back Colter May. The Lumberjacks quickly responded with a rushing touchdown by redshirt senior wide receiver Isaiah Eastman to tie the game.
After a second Wildcats touchdown, junior quarterback Ty Pennington threw a 74-yard touchdown pass to redshirt senior wide receiver Kolbe Katsis with 4:31 left on the clock, bringing the score to 14-14.
The Lumberjacks’ offense went scoreless in the second quarter as the Wildcats paired together a touchdown and a field goal to take a ten-point lead. Lumberjacks’ senior defensive back Mikale Greer intercepted a pass and returned it for a 42-yard touchdown in the waning moments of the half, putting the Lumberjacks down by only three at halftime.
After back-and-forth punts, the Wildcats locked the Lumberjacks out with an interception in the third quarter, not allowing them to put any points on the board while adding another touchdown and field goal to their score. They continued to outpace the Lumberjacks in the fourth quarter, scoring both before and after the Lumberjacks’ lone touchdown of the second half.
The Lumberjacks ended their season No. 6 in the Big Sky Conference with a 7-5 regular season record and a 4-4 record in the conference.
