The Dukes had a very modest NIL budget last year, fronted largely by the Montpelier Collective, which is led by Cliff Wood, a former JMU senior associate AD for development. The collective works closely with JMU athletics and has plans to be officially folded under university management by summer 2025 in anticipation of the House v. NCAA settlement receiving final approval.“Those are conversations we’re having right now as an administrative team,” JMU athletic director Matt Roan told The Athletic last summer regarding revenue sharing. “We need to set goals for where we are and for where the puck is heading as well. For us, a version of revenue sharing — a uniquely JMU version of revenue sharing — is certainly something that we’re interested in.”

Sluka’s running ability should pair nicely with JMU’s offense as well. The Dukes had success using wildcat quarterback JC Evans in the Boca Raton Bowl with Barnett sidelined, running Evans 10 times for 64 yards and a touchdown. Sluka ran for 253 yards (6.5 yards per carry) in three games with UNLV in 2024 and rushed for more than 1,200 yards in each of his last two seasons with Holy Cross. What’s JMU’s NIL, financial outlook?

No definitive injury update or timetable has been provided on Barnett, who returns to JMU in 2025, but at the very least Sluka offers some competition and veteran insurance should Barnett miss any time. The Dukes previously added another quarterback in Richmond transfer Camden Coleman this offseason.
