MLB DFS Picks: Spotlight Pitchers
In turn, LHP Matthew Boyd is worthy of tournament consideration against the Phillies, with the oft-injured 34-year-old only 10 innings away from his largest workload of the preceding five seasons. The right-handers in the lineup for Philadelphia have struggled this season with southpaws, though they were tremendous last year. It is also worth pointing out that Bryce Harper (wrist) is on the injured list.
Atlanta is in Milwaukee starting a three-game series tonight. Reigning National League Cy Young Award winner LHP Chris Sale will be on the mound against the hometown nine. The 36-year-old has similar numbers to last season, with his strikeouts, walks and home runs each up a tick. The Brew Crew strikes out around league average against southpaws, but their power has disappeared this season with a scant .121 ISO.
Rhys Hoskins and Jackson Chourio are producing like All-Star shoe-ins, but catcher William Contreras is having his worst season against southpaws and Christian Yelich has faltered after a resurgent season last year against fellow lefties. Journeyman Daz Cameron is just happy to be on the field, and former prospect Sal Frelick is much better against righties. The matchup won’t be a walk in the park, but with no Coors Field Extravaganza, there is room under the salary cap to go with a bucks-deluxe pitcher.
Aside from a disastrous performance in his second start of the season, RHP Merrill Kelly has been steady. That game took place in Yankee Stadium, where he allowed nine runs, including a trio of taters in 3.2 innings to the Bronx Bombers. Remember the torpedo bat craze?
In the subsequent 11 starts, Kelly had a 2.55 ERA, 2.56 FIP and a 2.79 xFIP. This was accompanied by just over a strikeout per inning and only five home runs.
The Mariners perform much better on offense away from Seattle, though the team is best positioned to deal with lefties.
Julio Rodriguez and Randy Arozarena are competent at the plate in same-handed matchups, but nothing that should overly intimidate Kelly. Switch-hitters Cal Raleigh and Jorge Polanco do their best work from the left side of the plate, so they will be the biggest worry for the 36-year-old baseball lifer. Rowdy Tellez will be in the lineup until a lefty comes out of the bullpen, and leadoff man J.P. Crawford is a contact maven but short on power.
Kelly is a top-5 option on the full slate, though he really stands out on the three-game late slate, which has some fun contests already posted across the main DFS sites.
MLB DFS Picks: Top Stacks
Main Slate Primary Target: Arizona Diamondbacks
Writing these articles every day is fun, a labor of love and also a reminder of things that go sideways. Your Ol’ Pal said some less-than-flattering things about RHP George Kirby, who had struggled since returning from injury. So naturally, he struck out a career-high 14 Angels, which also is the highest mark in the majors this season, tying RHP Max Meyer of the Miami Marlins. The goal is to be right more often than wrong, and that can be challenging in the highly variant sport of baseball.
Coincidently, the recommendation is again to target a Seattle starter; this time it is RHP Emerson Hancock. Like Kirby, Hancock was a first-round selection, though he is not on the same trajectory as his teammate and is unlikely to ever sniff an All-Star nomination, which Kirby has already earned. RHP Logan Gilbert is nearing a return, with the team wanting him to have one more rehabilitation start in the minors. This means Hancock is likely pitching for a spot in the bullpen; otherwise he is likely to be sent back down to the minors unless the team decides it is struggling RHP Bryce Miller who should be demoted instead.
Tempting fate again, Hancock is not much of a strikeout pitcher, recording more than five in just three of his 25 career starts. The 26-year-old also allows power to hitters swinging the stick from both sides of the plate, with elevated hard-hit and line-drive rates that can turn into extra base knocks.
Pretty much everyone in a Diamondbacks uniform is in play tonight, as only Alek Thomas and Jose Herrera are bats to avoid.
Main Slate Secondary Target: Los Angeles Angels
Tonight LHP Jeffrey Springs will be on the mound for the Athletics, and it appears injuries have gotten the best of the 32-year-old. In 2022, Springs had a breakout season with Tampa Bay, and he was building on that in the early portion of 2023 when he suffered a UCL injury that required Tommy John surgery, though he at least got the bag with a four-year, $31 million deal a couple months prior.
Since returning to action in 2023, Springs has had walk and home run issues, which is not a good combination. He is still a mid-rotation talent on his best days, but those have been few and far between over his 20 outings since returning to action.
Leadoff man Zach Neto, outfielder Taylor Ward and catcher Logan O’Hoppe are the trio to target, along with Angels legend Mike Trout. On the late slate, Jo Adell is worthy of consideration as a discount dandy, though he is a human wind machine when he is not making contact.

The inaugural SA Water Polo Winter Series delivered world-class action, record crowds, and a big boost for South African water polo.
Gqeberha, South Africa (12 August 2025) – The Newton Park Indoor Pool in Gqeberha was the stage for a thrilling debut of the South Africa Water Polo Winter Series that took place from 8 to 10 August, where the Rhinos men’s and Elephants women’s teams powered their way to overall victory.
The three-day tournament brought together 112 of South Africa’s top senior water polo players. Drafted into four franchise squads, namely the Rhinos, Buffaloes, Elephants, and Lions. All battling it out for a share of the R224,000 prize purse.
The men’s final was a heart-stopper. After a tense 13–13 draw in regular time, the Rhinos edged past the previously unbeaten Lions with an 8–7 penalty shoot-out win.
“It’s unbelievable,” said Rhinos captain Jonathan Swanepoel. “To have a game of such swings up by two, down by two and then an opportunity to win it at the end with three rounds of penalties that was definitely one for the spectators!”
The 24-year-old, who has competed at three world championships, believes events like this are vital for the sport’s growth.
“A tournament of this level of quality and professionalism is exactly what this country needs, and what the world needs, so I’m feeling really inspired and looking forward to many more of these to come.”
In the women’s competition, the Elephants were unstoppable, going unbeaten into the final. They led from the first chukka against the Rhinos and held on for an 11–10 win, despite a strong late surge from their opponents.
A high-calibre event indeed, as 2020 Tokyo Olympian and veteran of four world championships, Nicola Macleod praised the franchise system for its competitive balance.
“I’m so proud of the team,” said Elephants captain Nicola. “Last night we had to play catch up, so we weren’t going to do that again. Being out in front gave us a lot more composure, as you don’t necessarily need to score, you just have to make sure you don’t concede.”
Bronze went to the Buffaloes men’s team with a 13–11 win over the Elephants, while the Lions women claimed a 10–8 victory over the Buffaloes.
Tournament director Siegfried Lokotsch was thrilled with the response.
“The standard of water polo on display and the level of intensity was incredible. I haven’t seen water polo like that in at least 15 years,” he said. “For a first event, the vibe was also fantastic… we got much more support than we anticipated.”
The Winter Series, the first national tournament under South Africa Water Polo (SAWP), also hosted a development clinic for 68 young players. This included those from under-resourced communities. Coached by big names in the water polo fraternity like Lwazi Madi, Kelsey Thomson, and Chad Roman.
It was a weekend of high-intensity action and big wins.

NBA Scout Expects Lakers' Luka Dončić to Win MVP, Scoring Title Next Season

An NBA scout who was in attendance to watch Slovenia play Germany during a EuroBasket friendly was amazed by how “incredible” Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Dončić looked.
Dončić has lost 30 pounds since last summer, a league source told DallasHoopsJournal.com.
“Man, he looks incredible,” the NBA scout told DallasHoopsJournal.com. “He’s quicker and more explosive. He’s getting by people more easily. I think he’s on a mission, man. I think he’s gonna win MVP and the scoring title next season. He wants to get revenge on Dallas for basically fat-shaming him.”
Dončić led the NBA in points per game during the 2023-24 season. He averaged 33.9 points.
The Dallas Mavericks traded Dončić last season because general manager Nico Harrison had issues with the five-time All-Star’s weight, diet, work ethic and conditioning. Dončić dealt with a serious calf injury last season, preventing him from getting into the elite shape he’s in right now.
One of the best players in the NBA, Dončić played in 28 games with the Lakers last season after the Mavericks shockingly traded him in February. The skillful point-forward averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists with the purple and gold.
Los Angeles lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the 2025 postseason in five games, but Dončić played well offensively, averaging 30.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.8 assists despite being “out of shape.”
Dončić, 26, signed a three-year, $165 million extension with the Lakers on August 2. He recruited Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart to Los Angeles this offseason.
“I’m really grateful to the Lakers organization, my teammates and the fans for welcoming me and my family with so much support and kindness since day one,” Dončić said after signing his extension. “This is an amazing organization, and I truly believe in what we’re building together.
“I’m going to keep working as hard as I can to bring another championship to Los Angeles and to make Laker Nation proud. This is just the beginning. I’m excited for what’s ahead and to keep building something special with this team.”
Dončić enters next season with career averages of 28.6 points, 8.6 rebounds and 8.2 assists with the Mavericks and Lakers. He’s third in NBA history in points per game, trailing only NBA icons Michael Jordan (30.12) and Wilt Chamberlain (30.07).
Lakers second-year head coach JJ Redick is expected to start Luka Dončić, Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, LeBron James and Deandre Ayton next season. Dončić is looking to win his first NBA title. He lost to the Boston Celtics in the 2024 NBA Finals with the Mavericks in five games.
