CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A NASCAR Cup Series champion, a two-time Southern 500 champion, and a modified legend are headed into the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Kurt Busch, Harry Gant, and Ray Hendrick will be immortalized in the NASCAR Hall of Fame, joining the previous 67 inductees. H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler, the longtime promoter and manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway, was awarded the 2026 Landmark Award.

Kurt Busch

The 2004 NASCAR Cup Series Champion will enter the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.

Busch won 34 races in his illustrious career, including the 2017 Daytona 500 and the 2010 Coca-Cola 600.

The Las Vegas native won races with five different teams: Roush, Penske, Stewart-Haas, Ganassi, and 23XI.

Busch was a cornerstone of 2000s NASCAR for his on-track success and outspoken behavior, often fueled by a short temper that fused iconic rivalries with Jimmy Spencer, Tony Stewart, and even his own brother, Kyle Busch.

Harry Gant

“Handsome” Harry Gant will head into the Hall of Fame in his seventh year on the ballot. Gant won 18 races in his career, most notably the 1984 and 1991 Southern 500s.

Gant won four straight races in September 1991, tying a modern NASCAR record.

The Taylorsville, North Carolina native scored five top-five points finishes, including a second-place finish in 1984 behind Terry Labonte.

Ray Hendrick

“Mr. Modified” was inducted into the Hall of Fame on the pioneer ballot. Hendrick is estimated to have won over 700 races in NASCAR’s modified and late model sportsman divisions.

Hendrick was named one of the 50 Greatest NASCAR Drivers in 1998.

NASCAR coming to San Diego for road race in Coronado – NBC 7 San Diego

NASCAR is replacing its Chicago stop with a road race in San Diego, according to the Associated Press.

A source within the racing organization told NBC 7 that the event would run on the naval base on Coronado during Father’s Day weekend (June 19-21) next year, adding that the raceway could be as long as three miles.

The event will be the first NASCAR points race run in Southern California since 2023 in Fontana, Calif., and the first one ever held in San Diego County.

The idea to hold a race in San Diego was raised after it was announced that Chicago would not be holding its road race next year. It’s not clear at this point who conceived of the Coronado concept, but the stock-car series does a lot to tap into its military fan base, so the selection of San Diego County makes sense.

How long San Diego County might have the race is an unknown as well, especially given the following statement NASCAR released:

“Following a successful three years, the NASCAR Chicago Street Race will hit pause in 2026 to allow NASCAR to be responsive to residents’ and elected officials’ feedback. We will continue to work together toward a new potential date and develop a plan to further optimize operational efficiencies with the goal of the event’s return in 2027.”

An official NASCAR announcement for San Diego has been scheduled for Wednesday, though the organization has not responded officially to a request for a comment for this story, nor has the city manager or police public information officer of Coronado.

Several other outlets are reporting the news as well, including The Athletic, the New York Times sports site; and Racer.com.

“NASCAR has explored multiple options to hold a points race in Southern California — a key market to the league, its teams, media rights partners and sponsors,” reported the Athletic recently. “This search led NASCAR to San Diego, which has never hosted a Cup race …”

Southern California last hosted NASCAR in 2024 on a quarter-mile short track built inside the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum during its exhibition season in February.

Denny Hamlin, who wasn’t even sure he’d be healed from offseason shoulder surgery in time to compete in the Clash at the Coliseum, won the exhibition that NASCAR hurried into a one-day show to avoid a dangerous Pineapple Express storm headed toward California.

Hendrick’s Kyle Larson announcement forces broadcasters into change – Motorsport – Sports

Kyle Larson was supposed to be in the broadcast booth this Saturday during the Pennzoil 250 Xfinity Series Race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The 32-year-old was meant to be one of several drivers experimenting with broadcasting hits for their post-racing careers alongside Ross Chastain (Charlotte and Mexico City), Austin Cindric (Nashville), Ryan Blaney (Pocono), AJ Allmendinger (Chicago), Christopher Bell (Sonoma), and Denny Hamlin (Dover).

Instead, Larson has been drafted by Hendrick Motorsports to run their No. 17 Chevy in Saturday’s afternoon race, marking the second time he will try to complete a double this season. He is not the only driver on double duty and The CW Network, set to air the race, will now need to find a late replace.ent.

The former Cup Series winner was victorious in his last Xfinity Series race, winning the 2025 Andy’s Frozen Custard 300 in Texas (this race came part of a triple attempt: Larson narrowly finished second in Friday’s Truck race).

Larson’s victory in Texas came for JR Motorsport, with which he also won the 2022 Sunoco Go Reward 200 at the Glen. Most of his Xfinity Series racing experience, including his two 2024 wins, has come for Hendrick Motorsports.

Larson certainly has a number of years left before he has to pivot to broadcasting. Kyle Busch may bot have many, and he explained to The Athletic for trying the new gig

“I’m just dipping my toe into this and giving it a shot and seeing what the networks think, what the producers think, and everybody behind the scenes to see if I have a voice and an opinion later on down the road,” he explained.
