Purdue athletes ready to compete at NCAA track and field championships

Purdue basketball coach Matt Painter on Boilers’ 2025-26 season
Purdue conducted its first practice on Monday ahead of the upcoming season. Hear what coach Matt Painter said afterwards.
WEST LAFAYETTE − Cameron Miller is as ready as he can ever be.
The environment this week will not faze the Purdue sprinter in his third trip to the NCAA outdoor track and field championships.
Three months ago, Miller was the bronze medalist in the 200 meters at the NCAA indoor championships.
In a college career that started in 2019 and has spanned three schools, Florida and Louisville before coming to Purdue with his father, who is the Boilermaker head coach, Miller makes no bones about how he wants to go out this week, beginning with Wednesday’s 200-meter semifinals.
“Run sub 20 (seconds) and go for the win,” Miller said before departing for Eugene, Oregon, last week.
Last month in Eugene, Miller ran a personal best 20.12 seconds in the 200-meter preliminaries at the Big Ten Championships. Two years ago, Miller placed eighth in the 200 at the NCAA outdoor championships and last season was 12th. He’s the only participant in this year’s 200-meter race to be competing at the outdoor NCAAs for a third time.
More importantly for Miller, he’s one of four Boilermakers representing the track and field program.
Jalen Elrod, heptathlon
Elrod was heartbroken after missing the NCAA qualifying mark by one point last month. She traveled to Eugene as an alternate. It was announced on Tuesday that an athlete in the heptathlon scratched and she would fill the spot.
“These past few weeks have been the biggest emotional roller coaster of my life,” Elrod said. “When I initially missed the national mark by only one point, I was devastated. It felt like my collegiate career came to such an unsatisfying ending.”
Elrod was an All-American in pentathlon during the indoor season and now she aims to become Purdue’s first heptathlon All-American since Angela Craft in 2001.
“I know we’re going to make some magic happen this weekend,” said Elrod, who competes on Friday and Saturday.
Bode Gilkerson, high jump
The only Indiana native of Purdue’s foursome in Oregon this week, Gilkerson was a two-time state high jump champion at Plainfield and helped the Quakers win the overall team state title in 2022.
Gilkerson cleared 7 feet, 1 3/4 inches at the NCAA East First Round meet in Jacksonville, Florida, marking the first Boiler high jumper to reach nationals since Eric Blackman in 2017.
The sophomore takes the approach of trying to set a personal record every meet. If he’s able to do that on Friday, he believes that bodes well for All-American recognition.
“Coach (Tony) Miller tells us that this competition is like no other,” Gilkerson said. “I’m looking to do the best that I can do. In my mind, that’s going to take me to the top eight.”
Andreas Hantson, decathlon
A native of Estonia, Hantson has the most unique path to ending up in West Lafayette.
He sent out emails with his high school scores and results to college coaches in the United States.
Purdue assistant coach Raffael Craig responded, After viewing a few YouTube videos and reading up on Purdue University, Hantson made a spontaneous decision to leave his home country and move to Indiana.
Now he’s representing the Boilermakers in the most grueling event at the NCAA Championships.
“My goal was to get there last year,” said Hantson, a sophomore. “This year, I had to. I had to do whatever it takes.”
Hantson qualified with 7,686 points at the Bryan Clay Multi-Event meet in April.
“My goal is to do my best in every event, because if I do that, I’m going to get a good score and then, most likely, I’d be a first-team All-American,” Hantson said.

Men’s Volleyball Adds Milan Zarkovic as Associate Head Coach

Zarkovic comes to Westwood after spending the last 12 seasons with the Hawai’i men’s volleyball program, where he helped lead the Rainbow Warriors to back-to-back National Championships in 2021 and 2022, as well as runner-up finishes in 2019 and 2023.
“We are thrilled to welcome Milan Zarkovic as our new associate head coach for UCLA Men’s Volleyball,” head coach John Hawks said. “Milan’s extensive experience internationally and domestically, as well as his passion for the game, will be invaluable to our program. Milan has a proven track record of developing elite players and fostering a competitive team culture, which aligns perfectly with our championship aspirations. I look forward to working alongside him as we continue to build on our tremendous legacy here at UCLA. Welcome to Westwood, Milan!”
While at Hawai’i, Zarkovic led the Rainbow Warriors to seven appearances in the NCAA tournament, four national title game appearances, and two NCAA titles. During his time in Manoa, UH accumulated a better than 75% winning percentage and recorded five of the winningest records in program history. Zarkovic was named the AVCA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2020 and 2023.
“I am very excited for the opportunity to work for one of the best university institutions in the world,” Zarkovic said. “I’ve had a long-standing volleyball relationship with John Hawks, and that will be our strength moving forward at UCLA. I’m heading to California as a man who took great pride in what I did in Hawaii, and I feel like I left them in great shape. I’d like to also add a big thank you to John Hawks, Gavin Crew and their administration for all your efforts to bring me to the Bruin family!”
Zarkovic’s accolades extend past the collegiate ranks, as he also has an extensive head coaching history in Europe. Zarkovic has more than a decade of national team coaching experience, including serving as head coach of Belarus’ Senior National Team from 2011-12. He served as head coach of the Serbian Junior National Team (formerly Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro) from 2001-13, leading the team to a bronze medal at the European Junior Championships in 2010 and a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships in 2011.
In all, Zarkovic helped the Serbian youth teams capture five gold medals at the Balkan Championships and three runner-up finishes. He also led his teams to the World Junior Championships three times, including a third-place finish in 2011 in Brazil and seventh-place finishes in 2003 in Iran and 2005 in India. Under his guidance, Serbia moved up from a No. 28 FIVB ranking in 2003 to No. 1 in 2010. In addition, he directed the Serbian squad which captured gold medals at the 2009 and 2011 World Youth Championships. The 2009 squad also won gold at the European Youth Championships, while the 2011 team won silver.
Zarkovic has also coached in the professional ranks for over 20 years at nine different clubs, including a stint with Al Ain in the UAE from 2012 to 2013. At each stop, Zarkovic led his team to a championship. He began his coaching career in 1990 with VC “Anorthosis” (Limassol), then from 1992-97, he coached in VC “Enosis Paralimni” before moving to VC “Pafiakos Silogos Athlopaidion” from 1997-2000. During this time, he led his clubs to several championships and cup titles.
In 2000, Zarkovic returned to Serbia as coach of VC “Partizan” (Belgrade). For the next four seasons, he remained with the club and won both the Championship and Cup titles. In 2004, he coached VC “CSS Sfax” (Tunisia), where he managed to win both the championship and cup titles again. In 2007, he returned to “Partizan” where he coached until 2011. During the 2010-11 season, he won yet another Championship title.
UCLA men’s volleyball enters the 2026 season fresh off another strong season in 2025. The Bruins, under first-year head coach John Hawks, advanced to the NCAA Championship title match for the third consecutive year, won over 20 matches for the third straight season, and claimed the MPSF regular-season title for the third successive year. To conclude the season, outside hitter Cooper Robinson was named the MPSF Player of the Year, while Robinson, Zach Rama, Andrew Rowan, and Cameron Thorne were all named AVCA All-Americans.

Meet the Week 1 2025 AU Pro Volleyball Championship Captains

Brittany Abercrombie
Abercrombie is no stranger to the captain’s role after spending four consecutive weeks with that team-leading responsibility in 2024.
She made history in 2024 by becoming the ninth newcomer in any Athletes Unlimited sport to win a title, and the fourth champion in AU Pro Volleyball history. She put together one of the most dominant seasons ever, tallying 4,521 leaderboard points–the third-highest single-season total all-time–and setting records for win points (2,020) and stat points (2,001). She became the first AU athlete to record 2,000 win points in a single season and led the league in MVP points (500). Abercrombie also strung together seven straight Match MVPs to open her AU career, won 13 of 15 matches overall, and never fell below second on the leaderboard en route to the crown.
Her resume already sits among the league’s greats. She ranks fifth all-time with nine 300-point matches, tied for seventh with 11 Match MVPs, and is one of just six athletes to reach 200 kills in a season. Beyond AU, Abercrombie has played professionally in Poland, Germany, Turkey, and South Korea, represented Puerto Rico’s national team, and was a two-time All-Pac-12 honoree at USC.
She most recently left her mark in the Major League Volleyball (MLV) record books by tallying the most points in a single season, most kills and points in a three-set match, and most kills in a single season while leading the Orlando Valkyries to the league title and capturing Opposite of the Year honors for the 2025 season. AU newcomer libero Pornpun Guedpard and AU veteran middle Kaz Brown were also a part of that championship run, and will both be solid options for her in the Week One draft. Either way, she’s poised to take all of the momentum from the last year into Omaha action.
Bethania De La Cruz-Mejía
De La Cruz-Mejía is a staple of AU history and owns career records for overall leaderboard points (15,614), win points (6,540), stat points (7,374), MVP points (1,700), kills (791), and service aces (65). She has captained more weeks than any athlete across AU sports (15), and remains the only player to captain in every season of AU Pro Volleyball.
De La Cruz-Mejía has consistently ranked at the top of the leaderboard. She became the 2022 Champion, a three-time medalist, and 2024 runner-up with 4,142 points. She’s the all-time Match MVP leader (36) and has authored six of the top eight single-match point totals in league history. She’s also the only athlete with five matches of at least 20 kills. Internationally, she is a decorated member of the Dominican Republic national team, an eight-time gold medalist, and competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics. In 2024, she also played with the Omaha Supernovas of MLV, helping secure the league’s inaugural title.
Last year, her rosters underwent natural changes throughout the weeks, but she seemed partial to Manami Kojima in the libero spot, and veteran Tori Dixon as an option in the middle. No matter who she chooses, her experience in the captain’s chair alone gives her a leg up on the rest of the Week One leaders, and it’ll be interesting to see her strategy and expertise at work come draft time.
Madi Kingdon Rishel
Kingdon Rishel may have the least experience as an AU captain, but she made an immediate impact in her AU debut last season, climbing the leaderboard and taking charge for Week Five. She finished third with 3,400 leaderboard points and earned an All-Position Team nod. She led the league with 242 kills (just one shy of the single-season record) and posted three 20+ kill outings, becoming the only athlete to do so in a single campaign. Her 10 Match MVP nods placed her among the top five in league history for a season, and she eclipsed the 400-point mark in matches twice.
Her AU rookie season followed an extensive international career with stops in Italy, Turkey, South Korea, China, Azerbaijan, and Indonesia. She was also a member of Team USA from 2016 to 2022, winning multiple gold medals in the Volleyball Nations League and Pan American Cup. At Arizona, she graduated as one of the most decorated Wildcats in program history, ranking second in career kills (1,943) and earning multiple AVCA All-America honors.
She rolled into League One Volleyball’s inaugural season, where she was a constant contributor to the Houston squad, and played alongside Team USA superstars and 2025 AU newcomers Micha Hancock and Jordan Thompson. That pre-established on-court chemistry could guide her draft choices.
Morgan Hentz
Hentz enters her fourth AU season as one of the league’s most accomplished defenders. She was named Defensive Player of the Year in 2022, 2023, and 2024, and earned her first career medalist finish last season by placing fourth overall. In 2024, she reset her own single-season record with 242 digs and became the first player in AU history to record double-digit digs in all 15 matches.
Her defensive excellence extends across three AU seasons: she ranks fourth all-time in leaderboard points (9,515), second in MVP points (700), and fifth in stat points (3,935). She also holds the single-match digs record (25) and has logged 43 double-digit dig matches—the most in league history. Professionally, Hentz played for Dresden SC in Germany and the Atlanta Vibe in the PVF, while also serving as an Olympic alternate for Team USA in 2024. At Stanford, she was a three-time national champion and the program’s all-time digs leader (2,310).
Hentz spent all summer with the U.S. National Team, playing in the Volleyball Nations League and the FIVB World Championship following a stellar season with MLV’s Atlanta Vibe, which earned her a second straight Libero of the Year award.
In Atlanta, she spent two consecutive seasons with setter Marlie Monserez and trusted her to guide the offense in AU as well. She chose Monserez as her setter in both weeks that she served as a captain last AU season, and could stick with that trend to kick off the year in Omaha.
The 2025 AU Pro Volleyball Championship will feature 44 of the world’s top volleyball players in an exclusive, high-stakes tournament to determine the ultimate champion of the sport. These elite athletes, handpicked from the best domestic and international pro leagues, will face off in the nation’s premier volleyball hubs in Omaha, Nebraska, at the Liberty First Credit Union Arena (October 1-15) and in Madison, Wisconsin, at the Alliant Energy Center (October 22 – November 3). Tickets for both locations are now available here.
