Reliable Boston Red Sox Starting Pitcher Set to Begin Minor League Rehab Assignment S

According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive, Boston Red Sox’s starting pitcher Kutter Crawford is set to begin a rehab assignment next week. He’s been out all season with a patellar tendon issue that crept up at the beginning of spring training. Because he didn’t even make a single appearance in spring training, his rehab time should be lengthy, so it’s unknown when he’ll return to the Red Sox.

A 29-year-old Florida native, he made 33 starts for the Red Sox last season, going 9-16 with a 4.36 ERA. He struck out 175 batters in 183.2 innings.

A four-year veteran, Crawford has spent his entire career with Boston. He’s 18-31 with a 4.56 and his 16 losses led baseball in 2024. It’s unclear what his role will be moving forward, as the Red Sox currently have Walker Buehler, Garrett Crochet, and Brayan Bello in the rotation. Tanner Houck is injured and the team has dealt with injuries to Richard Fitts as well, but Fitts is back and Hunter Dobbins is in the mix too.

One of the more disappointing teams in baseball, Boston enters play on Sunday at 28-32 and in fourth place in the American League East. They’ll take on the Atlanta Braves on Sunday with first pitch set for 1:35 p.m. ET. Crochet, acquired this past offseason, will start on the mound against Bryce Elder.

Crochet has gone 4-4 with a 2.04 ERA in the early going while Elder is 2-2 with a 4.50. Atlanta enters play at 27-30.

RISING UP THE RANKS: Max Clark is now the No. 2 prospect in baseball, according to Keith Law of the Athletic. CLICK HERE:

CORA PUSHING THE ENVELOPE? Red Sox manager Alex Cora spoke to local radio in Boston on Thursday about top prospect Roman Anthony, and it seems like he may be pushing the front office into promoting him. CLICK HERE:

Whitecaps, Rapids seek to end slumps – Field Level Media – Professional sports content solutions

The Vancouver Whitecaps and Colorado Rapids will set out to reverse some recent poor form in MLS play when they meet Saturday night in Commerce City, Colo.

The Whitecaps (11-4-5, 38 points) have dropped three of their last four games to lose their grip on the top spot in the Western Conference to San Diego FC. But Vancouver coach Jesper Sorensen is well aware of the toll a busy, largely successful season has taken on his club.

After reaching the CONCACAF Champions Cup final on June 1, Vancouver spent most of the month without leading scorer Brian White and wingers Jayden Nelson and Sebastian Berhalter, who were all on international duty.

That trio was back for Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Valour FC in the Canadian Championship quarterfinals and should be available on Saturday. Playmaker Ryan Gauld remains out with a knee issue.

“I think that we’ll be picking up again,” Sorensen said after that win. “Right now, we’ve also been relying a lot on a lot of the same players performing, and it’s normal that it’s not just a straight line, that it’s up and down in the season, and we’ll pick up again.”

Meanwhile, the Rapids (7-10-5, 26 points) have lost five of their last seven games in the league to slide out of the playoff places after a promising start.

Most recently, Colorado fell 3-0 Wednesday at Los Angeles FC — a match in which Jackson Travis was issued a red card for violent conduct in the sixth minute and Denis Bouanga put the hosts in front by halftime from the penalty spot.

The Rapids have scored multiple goals only twice in their last 13 MLS games while going scoreless in five. Djordje Mihailovic has eight goals and Rafael Navarro seven, but the rest of the squad has only nine combined.

“The main thing for us is that we have to understand that there’s going to be no easy games, and this is a huge opportunity for us, at home, against a good team,” Rapids coach Chris Armas said during a Thursday interview with Denver’s Altitude Sports Radio. “But we’re a good team, and we welcome the challenge. We’ve got to focus on the controllables. … You can’t look externally for solutions.”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Miami’s Devoux Deysel and Stanford’s Roisin Willis have been named the 2025 Atlantic Coast Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year for men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, headlining the 2025 All-ACC Academic Teams, announced on Friday, June 11.

Deysel capped off a strong 2025 season by winning the NCAA title in the men’s javelin throw. At the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, Deysel recorded a throw of 81.75m (268-2) to finish at the top of the podium. Deysel also won the 2025 ACC javelin championship with a personal-best mark of 85.35m (270-2), besting the field by nearly 50 feet. The Garsfontein, South Africa, native is a two-time USTFCCCA Division I All-American and three-time NCAA Champion, also winning two NCAA Division II javelin titles in 2022 and 2023.

Deysel is the first student-athlete from Miami to be named Scholar-Athlete of the Year in men’s outdoor track & field. After earning his bachelor’s degree, Deysel is currently enrolled as a graduate student studying Data Science.

Like Deysel, Willis was an NCAA champion this season, winning the women’s 800-meter run. With a championship record time of 1:58.13, she became the first ACC student-athlete to win the NCAA 800-meter outdoor championship since 2021. At the ACC Championships, Willis earned the bronze medal and First-Team All-ACC honors. Her time of 1:58.13 at the NCAA Championships was the third-fastest time in collegiate history.

Willis, a history major, is the first student-athlete from Stanford to be named Scholar-Athlete of the Year in women’s outdoor track & field. She was also named to the All-ACC Academic Team for women’s indoor track & field earlier this year. The Stevens Point, Wisconsin, native was also a semifinalist for The Bowerman Award and was named the USTFCCCA West Region Women’s Track Athlete of the Year.

A total of 236 student-athletes were named to the 2025 All-ACC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Academic Team, led by 29 from Duke. Notre Dame followed with 23 honorees, while Stanford had 21.

On the women’s side, a total of 268 student-athletes earned All-ACC Academic Team honors, led by 26 from Virginia. Louisville and Clemson tied for the second-highest total of All-ACC Academic Team honorees with 20 each.

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – 231 CSUN student-athletes were named to the Big West 2024-25 Commissioner’s Honor Roll on Thursday, July 10.

To be named to the honor roll, student-athletes must be on a team roster in a Big West-sponsored sport and be eligible for competition. There are three categories on the list based on GPA: Honor Roll (3.00-3.20), With Honors (3.21-3.50), and Highest Honors (3.51-4.00). The Faculty Athletics Representatives (FAR) of each of the 11 Big West institutions submitted their lists to the conference office.

Of the 231 CSUN student-athletes nominated to the Honor Roll, 128 Matadors earned Highest Honors, sixth-most among Big West institutions.

In all, a total of 2,741 student-athletes from 11 institutions across all 21-conference sponsored sports were named to the 2024-25 Big West Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly commented, “The Big West Commissioner’s Honor Roll celebrates more than just academic success — it represents the extraordinary commitment of our student-athletes to excellence in every aspect of their college experience. Competing at the highest level of NCAA athletics while excelling in the classroom is no easy feat, and these individuals have demonstrated what it means to truly embody the spirit of the scholar-athlete. The Big West is proud to recognize their accomplishments and inspired by the discipline, leadership, and future they represent.”

UC San Diego had the most awardees in the conference with 360, with 204 receiving highest honors. UC Santa Barbara (347), UC Davis (273), Cal Poly (266), and Hawai’i (253) rounded out the top five. UC Irvine (236), CSUN (231), Cal State Fullerton (215), and Long Beach State (212) also eclipsed 200 honorees.

NEWBERRY — Newberry College Director of Volleyball Kiko Santos has officially welcomed Jasmine Chambers as the new Associate Head Coach for the Wolves women’s volleyball program.

Chambers joins the Wolves with a diverse and impressive coaching résumé. She most recently served as an assistant coach and adjunct professor at South Carolina State University. She has also held head coaching duties at Lamar Community College and contributed as a graduate assistant at Midwestern State University in Texas.

” I am absolutely thrilled to hire Jasmine Chambers as associate head women’s volleyball coach, said Santos. “She brings a wealth of experience to our program from playing and coaching in the collegiate volleyball. She has an absolute passion and excitement for the game and will help our program continue to grow.”

A rising star in the coaching ranks, Chambers was recently selected to participate in the prestigious 2025 NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy, an elite program hosted in partnership with WeCOACH and the NCAA. The Academy is dedicated to empowering women coaches through advanced leadership development and team-building strategies. Chambers was one of 85 coaches nationwide to complete the rigorous three-day program focused on reflection, growth, and professional connection.

In addition, Chambers was selected for the esteemed Big Ten Volleyball Mentorship Program—an initiative designed to elevate diverse leaders within the volleyball coaching profession. As part of the program, she was paired with Brad Keller, head coach of the University of Southern California (USC) women’s volleyball team, gaining invaluable insights from one of the sport’s top minds.

Chambers’ excellence in coaching has also been recognized with the 2021 AVCA Diversity Coaches Award, and she is an active member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

As a former collegiate standout at Alcorn State University, Chambers left her mark on the volleyball court as a decorated setter. She was named team MVP, earned multiple SWAC Setter of the Week honors, and ranks in the program’s top 10 for single-season and all-time assists. She also competed for one season as a member of the Lady Braves Women’s Basketball team.

A Fort Worth, Texas native, Chambers holds a Bachelor degree in Health and Physical Education from Alcorn State University, a Master’s degree in Sports Administration from Midwestern State University, and an Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leadership from Columbia International University. She is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Columbia International University.

With a track record of leadership, competitive drive, and a passion for student-athlete development, Chambers is poised to make a powerful impact to the Wolves volleyball program.

Olympia Track and Field Club turns kids into champions | Sports

Fifteen years ago, Maddette Smith recognized a void in Southwest Florida’s sports scene and founded the Olympia Track and Field Club to fill that void.

“I’m a lover of track,” said Smith. “I went on a track scholarship myself. I traveled all over the world with track and field. When I first moved back to Southwest Florida, I felt like track had pretty much died out here.”

Smith’s vision has grown into a club with nearly 70 athletes training year-round, producing more than 50 college athletes with the help of dedicated coaches and parents.

“She’s a very great coach and she’s taught me a lot since I’ve been here,” said Mikayla Burton, a club member.

“She means a lot to me,” said Ava Fredrickson, a club member. “She’s a really fun coach and I just love her.”

Practices are held at Dunbar High School, where athletes have become a force to be reckoned with at the Junior Olympics.

“It just makes me feel really happy that I get to run and jump,” said Fredrickson.

Several athletes have run their races this year and more are preparing for the Junior Olympics at the end of this month.

“I’m training every day, almost every day, and practice has been hard, but I’m getting through it,” said Burton.

For many young athletes, the goals extend beyond this summer.

“I want to go to the Olympics, be a gold medalist and make my dad proud,” said Kyana Cranston, another club member.

“My goals are to run in middle school and high school and maybe one day become an elite runner,” said Fredrickson.

Thanks to Smith’s vision, these athletes are getting a jump start on winning medals.

“I’m so proud. Words can’t even express how I feel about how great they have done. I have a very good coaching staff. I have a very good parent support team. All the kids that are here right now, it’s always fruits of their labor because they come out here every day it’s hot and raining, it doesn’t matter,” said Smith.

The Olympia Track and Field Club continues to change lives and set the stage for young athletes to achieve their dreams.
