Sadly, Steve Huff – trailblazing racer, custom bike builder, electric dragster innovator, and tireless cancer warrior – passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by teammates, friends and family, on Wednesday, May 21, 2025.

He was 58.

Born on October 16, 1966, on Whidbey Island, Washington, Steve’s life was defined by velocity, vision, and a heart as powerful as his engines. Originally born in Oak Harbor, WA he graduated from South Whidbey High School.

A professional racing career spanning more than 30 years, Steve set more than 20 national and world speed records. In 2020, he made global headlines as the designer, builder, and driver of the world’s first 200 mph electric dragster. He earned international exposure through the NHRA and established himself as a pioneer and innovator of the drag racing’s electric future.

Steve’s talents didn’t stop at the track. A master custom motorcycle builder, his bikes graced the covers of major magazines and turned heads across the country, each one a work of art infused with precision, attitude, and always speed. Steve was once named the “Best bike builder you’ve never heard of.”

In 2020, Steve was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic upper tract urothelial cancer – a challenge that he met with the same determination and grit he brought to all aspects of his life and racing career.

Despite the diagnosis, Steve called 2022 the best year of his life. That year, he achieved his first National Championship, the APBA National Hydroplane Championship, a dream realized on the water that brought him deep pride and joy.

In addition, Steve and the Huff Motorsports team (headquartered in SeaTac) made 4 NHRA Nationals events with the Electric Dragster, and appearances at Cancer Care facilities and childhood learning events across the nation.

In his words:

“In the years since my cancer diagnosis I finally became ‘the man I always wanted to be’ living with intention, surrounded by love, and giving back in every way I could.”

Steve’s greatest victories weren’t just in motorsports. Steve gave back to his community through outreach and mentorship of young people, especially those with alternate learning styles. Inspiring young minds to chase their own kind of greatness, embracing their unique Superpowers. He didn’t just break records—he broke molds, redefining what it means to live fully, and leave a legacy worth celebrating.

Steve was a long term resident of Des Moines, WA and the City of SeaTac where he worked on his racing teams and their vehicles for over 20 years. September 22nd was named officially Steve Huff Motorsports Day by the City of SeaTac mayor in 2020, in honor of setting the first ever 200 mph record in the electric dragster.

He is survived by a community of racers, builders, dreamers, and fighters who will carry his legacy forward on the road, on the water, and in the hearts he touched.

A NASCAR team has confirmed exciting driver news ahead of this weekend’s racing action.

Spire Motorsports released an official statement on Monday announcing that their No. 07 Chevrolet Silverado will have a new driver in the cockpit for Saturday’s NASCAR Truck Series race, with Thomas Annunziata set to make his debut in the series at Lime Rock Park.

Recently, Spire confirmed that Corey LaJoie would drive the No. 07 for nine of the remaining 13 races this year. However, with LaJoie in action in the Cup Series this weekend in Atlanta, Annunziata has been given the nod.

The 20-year-old has previously had successful spells in karting, sports cars, Trans Am, and NASCAR’s developmental divisions, and has his eyes on the prize once again this weekend.

“It’s a dream to race for a top team in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series for my debut race,” he explained in a team statement.

“Spire Motorsports is one of the elite teams and I hope to get them another win.”

Annunziata to make Truck Series debut

The move comes at a race weekend where TOP LINER will be showcased as Spire Motorsports’ primary sponsor.

Annunziata has links with TOP LINER due to him racing with Burtin Racing in the Trans Am series, and his team principal at the time, Claudio Burtin, has been full of praise for the young star.

“Thomas drove for us in the Trans Am car and was on pace immediately,” said Burtin, owner at TOP LINER and team principal at Burtin Racing.

“He showed some unique car control. We look forward to mixing it up with the truck regulars and more to come!”

Spire Motorsports are a huge name across NASCAR, boasting the Nos. 7, 71 and 77 Chevrolets in the NASCAR Cup Series, the Nos. 07, 7, 71 and 77 Chevrolet Silverados in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, and the No. 77 Chevrolet in the ARCA Menards Series in select events.

Saturday’s NASCAR Truck Series race at Lime Rock Park, also known as the LiUNA! 150, will start at 1 pm ET.

The NASCAR In-Season Challenge features five rounds and will award $1 million to the champion.

play

The NASCAR Cup Series is set to debut its inaugural In-Season Challenge, in which 32 drivers are seeded and bracketed into a tournament, like March Madness or a tennis draw.

The In-Season Challenge, which will run for five weeks, is actually a series of individual races within five larger races. The drivers will not only be competing to win the weekly race as they normally would, but they will also be facing off in head-to-head matchups with the goal of finishing better than their opponent in the race and advancing to the next round.

The drivers were seeded based on their finishes at three previous races – at Michigan, Mexico City and Pocono – with the bracket placing the top two seeds on opposite halves of the draw. That means if the tournament holds to form, the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds would not meet up until the final, presuming they both advanced through each round.

The winner of the inaugural In-Season Challenge will take home $1 million.

The first round begins Saturday, June 28 at Echo Park Speedway (formerly Atlanta Motor Speedway) and features 16 head-to-head matchups among the 32 drivers. Beat your head-to-head opponent and you advance to the second round. Sixteen drivers will be eliminated after the first round.

Does that sound complicated? If so, we have you covered with the list of seeds, how the rounds work, every first-round matchup and where and when each of the five In-Season Challenge races will take place.

NASCAR considering San Diego for street race starting in 2026

Eager to get back into the lucrative Southern California market, NASCAR is considering staging a Cup Series street race in the San Diego area as soon as next season.

While no commitment has been reached, San Diego appears to be one of five or six sites vying for dates on next year’s schedule, which is expected to be finalized next month and announced in August.  NASCAR has been looking at possible sites in downtown San Diego, Coronado and one other spot in San Diego County.

“Schedule negotiations are one of the best-kept secrets in NASCAR,” a source told the San Diego Union-Tribune last week. “There is always speculation at this time of year as to where NASCAR is going. But no one knows.”

NASCAR has scouted the San Diego area for potential street courses and is working with Sports San Diego — the organization that produces the Holiday Bowl and Rady Children’s Hospital Basketball Invitational and backs sports tourism in the San Diego area. Sports San Diego did not respond to inquiries.

Southern California hasn’t hosted a regular-season NASCAR race since 2023, when Auto Club Speedway closed. Plans to rebuild that track as a half-mile oval have stalled.

In 2023-24, NASCAR held its preseason Busch Clash all-star race at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. But that race has been moved to Bowman-Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.

“NASCAR sees San Diego as it does Las Vegas,” said the source, “a destination-style venue, which makes it even more attractive than some other potential sites.”

However, San Diego also faces a number of obstacles — starting with finding a spot on an already packed schedule. NASCAR’s premier series runs from February through the first weekend of November.

This year’s schedule includes a street race in Chicago and the recently run inaugural road race in Mexico City. Both sites are seeking extensions to hold races beyond this year. There is also talk that if the Chicago street race contract isn’t extended, NASCAR could return to the nearby oval at Chicagoland Speedway.

Earlier this year, NASCAR said it wanted to explore “new and unique” street courses given the success at Chicago. Although the first two Chicago events were plagued by rain, the economic impact of each event was estimated at more than $200 million.

NASCAR was very happy with the inaugural Mexico City race, although the logistics and travel issues made it a difficult venue for teams.

Montreal, Philadelphia and Denver have also expressed interest in hosting a NASCAR street race. Montreal’s proposal has backing from the Canadian government. The Philadelphia proposal, which has the historic Franklin Field as its focal point, is tied to Pennsylvania’s Pocono Speedway losing one of its two traditional NASCAR races.

Were NASCAR to renew its contracts with both Chicago and Mexico City, there might not be an opening on the 2026 schedule unless NASCAR expands its schedule deeper into November. Adding a 39th and 40th date has been discussed before, but has met resistance from teams due to the already short off-season. NASCAR has raced as late as Nov. 20 in the past.

There has also been discussions to revise the playoff format at the end of the season and add a race to the regular season.

NASCAR has tight control of its race sites and schedule. Were the San Diego area to be granted a street race, it likely would appear early on the schedule where the Auto Club Speedway date used to be (late February or early March).

This is not the first time a car race has been proposed for downtown San Diego. In 1992, Long Beach Grand Prix founder Chris Pook wanted to move his IMSA sports car race to downtown San Diego after staging it for six years at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. But every course plotted by Pook ran into problems due to crossing railroad tracks and government regulations and restrictions.

IndyCar briefly looked at San Diego earlier this century with a course using Harbor Drive and Pacific Highway. But the tracks and train traffic proved to be an insurmountable barrier.

Coronado hosted the Coronado Speed Festival vintage car races from 1997 to 2015 at the North Island Naval Air Station as part of Fleet Week. But the Navy placed restrictions on what attendees could bring onto the base.

When NASCAR heads to Atlanta this weekend to race at the newly renamed at EchoPark Speedway, 40 Cup cars will be present for what is sure to be yet another thrilling race at the Georgia track.

The Cup Series has only reached 40 entries twice this year before Atlanta, and they were both crown jewel events. 41 cars started the Daytona 500 with the field expanding beyond max capacity due to Helio Castroneves taking the Open Exemption Provisional. There were also 40 cars taking part in the Coca Cola 600 for NASCAR’s longest race with Ross Chastain making history as he drove from 40th to first to win the event.

Atlanta will be the latest race to feature 40 cars with four open entries beyond the 36 full-time chartered teams. Corey LaJoie will be piloting the No. 01 Ford for Rick Ware Racing in his fourth start of the year, which follows his stint as a analyst for Prime Video.

Rising star Connor Zilisch will be driving a fourth entry for Trackhouse, again piloting the No. 87 Chevrolet with sponsorship from Red Bull. Zilisch, who won the most recent NASCAR Xfinity race at Pocono with Dale Jr. as his crew chief, will be making his third Cup start of the year.

The other two open entries will be B.J. McLeod in the No. 78 Live Fast Motorsports Chevrolet and 57-year-old David Starr in the No. 66 Garage 66 (formerly MBM Motorsports) Ford Mustang.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series will be joining the Cup Series at Atlanta while the NASCAR Truck Series heads north to compete at Lime Rock Park for the very first time.
