Over a decade has passed since the last South Jersey High School Graduate won an NCAA Track and Field Championship. All together, there are 14 Men and Women from South Jersey who have won NCAA Titles.

Some of the most famous South Jersey High School Graduates who went on to win NCAA Track and Field Titles include:

-Don Bragg from Penns Grove (1960 Olympic Gold Medal Pole Vault)
-Carl Lewis from Willingboro (Nine Olympic Gold Medals)
-English Gardner from Eastern (2016 Olympic Gold Medal 400-meter relay)
-Nia Ali from Pleasantville (2016 Olympic Silver and 2019 World Champion Hurdles)

Now, for the first time since Curtis Thompson with Mississippi State in 2014 won the NCAA Track and Field Javelin Championship, a South Jersey High School Graduate has joined this esteemed group of athletes.

Pleasantville High School Graduate Overcomes Adversity To Win NCAA Title

At Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon was where Gabriel Moronta was aiming for multiple NCAA Track and Field Championships. But after he finished second in the 400-meter race, he was disqualified after officials said Moronta took two steps out of his lane.

The Pleasantville High School Graduate made up for the mistake in his next event, when his South Florida Team competed in the 4×400 Relay. Moronta was the anchor leg in the race, getting USF past Texas A&M to win the NCAA Championship.

A Criminology Major at South Florida, Gabriel Moronta holds the USF 400 Meter Dash and the 4×400 Relay school records. He has now received All-American Honors in back to back Track and Field seasons (Second Team – 2024; First Team – 2025).

Before attending Mississippi State and South Florida, Moronta was a two-time 800-meter New Jersey State Champion while at Pleasantville High School.  He was a finalist for the 2020 Cape-Atlantic Senior Athlete of the Year.

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Three Florida Gulf Coast University beach volleyball student-athletes were named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team on Tuesday. Nicole De Oliveira, Kaitlyn Luebbers and Jaci Carpenter represented the Eagles on the list.

Each played a key role in FGCU’s 22-win season and semifinal appearance in the ASUN Conference Tournament. The Eagles defeated four ranked opponents during the 2025 campaign and climbed as high as No. 18 in the AVCA Collegiate Beach Volleyball Rankings. FGCU finished the season ranked after wins over No. 14 FIU, No. 15 Georgia State and No. 15 Florida Atlantic (twice). The Eagles also pushed No. 4 USC and No. 8 LSU the full distance.

Carpenter closed her career as one of the most decorated players in program history. In 2025 alone, she was named ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year, earned the Ken Kavanagh Eagle Scholar-Athlete Award, was inducted into the FGCU Hall of Fame and won ASUN Female Athlete of the Year. She posted a 21-13 record, primarily at the No. 2 and No. 3 pairs, and finished her career with 73 total victories—one of only three Eagles to record 70 or more wins. Carpenter graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA in communication.

Luebbers set a program record for career wins with 93, surpassing Kacie Johnson’s previous mark of 84 set in 2024. She went 19-16 as a part of FGCU’s No. 1 pair during her junior season and earned ASUN First Team honors for the second time. Paired with DeOliveira, the duo notched wins over No. 14 FIU, No. 15 Florida Atlantic, No. 19 North Florida and No. 20 Stetson, with three of the four victories coming in straight sets. Luebbers holds a 3.905 GPA while majoring in health science.

DeOliveira, also a health science major, carries a 3.714 GPA. She played every match in 2025 alongside Luebbers at the No. 1 spot, finishing 18-15 overall. DeOliveira also earned First Team All-ASUN honors and is tied for 10th on the program’s all-time career wins list with 60. She and Luebbers were just three points away from sending the Eagles to the ASUN Championship title match.

 

EUGENE, Oregon – Freshman distance runner Logan Schaeffler has qualified for the USATF Under 20 National Championship and will compete in the men’s 3K steeplechase final on Thursday, June 19. The event is set to begin at 5:47 p.m. Pacific (8:47 p.m. Eastern).

Schaeffler had an impressive rookie campaign for the Red Foxes during the outdoor season, running the 3,000m steeplechase three times in the spring, improving his time after each race and taking podium twice. He ran a 9:25.74 at the 2025 Colonial Relays, which was good for an eighth place finish. He followed that performance with a first place finish at the Rider Invitational. turning in a time of 9:18.35.

He wrapped up the outdoor season with a second place finish at the MAAC Outdoor Championship with a finish of 9:09.35, his fastest time of the season.

CINCINNATI – The University of Cincinnati volleyball team has announced its complete 2025 schedule, featuring 10 non-conference matchups and an 18-match Big 12 slate.  

The Bearcats will open the season by hosting their annual Tribute to #10, welcoming Wake Forest (Aug. 29) and Michigan (Aug. 31) to Fifth Third Arena for the three-day tournament. For more information on Tribute to #10, click here. 

Cincinnati will compete in three non-conference road tournaments during the early part of the season: the Chattanooga Classic (Sept. 4-6), the Linda Herman Classic (Sept. 12-13), and the Ball State Tournament (Sept. 18-19). Full tournament details, including opponents and times, are listed below.

The Queen City Classic returns to Fifth Third Arena on Tuesday, Sept. 9, when the Bearcats host crosstown rival Xavier at 6:30 p.m.

Cincinnati will play 18 Big 12 matches over 10 weeks while playing 10 teams once and four teams twice. The Bearcats will face UCF, West Virginia, Kansas and Kansas State in their home-and-away matchups. UC will host BYU, Utah, Iowa State, Houston and Colorado inside Fifth Third Arena. The road slate features trips to TCU, Baylor, Texas Tech, Arizona State and Arizona.

All midweek home matches are set for 6:30 p.m., with weekend matches scheduled for 1 p.m.

MEDFORD, MA (June 17, 2024) – Six Tufts University student-athletes have earned spots on the 2025 Academic All-District® Women’s At-Large Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC). The award recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances academically and athletically.

Receiving the honor are 2025 Tufts University graduates Margie Carden (women’s lacrosse), Andrea DelGiudice (field hockey), Lucy Howell (women’s rowing) and Emma Joyce (women’s lacrosse), as well as graduate student Madeline Delaney (women’s lacrosse) and rising senior Hannah Jiang (women’s rowing). Delaney, DelGiudice and Carden are earning the award for the second straight year.

To be nominated, student-athletes must be a significant contributor to their team with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at her current institution. A limit of six nominations per school is set. For field hockey and lacrosse players, nominees must have competed in 90 percent of the team’s total games played or have started 66 percent of the team’s total games. For rowing, nominees must have competed in a minimum of four competitions or as a member of an NCAA boat (1V8, 2V8, 1V4) at a conference championship.

For the Academic All-District® Women’s At-Large Teams, student-athletes from the following sports are eligible – Women’s Beach Volleyball, Women’s Bowling, Women’s Fencing, Women’s Field Hockey, Women’s Golf, Women’s Gymnastics, Women’s Ice Hockey, Women’s Lacrosse, Women’s Rifle, Women’s Rowing, Women’s Skiing and Women’s Water Polo.

Carden (International Relations degree), Delaney (Technology Management and Leadership program) and Joyce (Community Health/English) were leading members of the women’s lacrosse team which won the NESCAC Championship and were NCAA runners-up this spring. DelGiudice (Computer Science) was also on a conference champion and NCAA second-place team with field hockey in the fall. Howell (Astrophysics) and Jiang (Cognitive Brain Science Studies) were part of the rowing squad which won a second-straight NCAA Championship and NESCAC Championship.

The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes Women’s At-Large honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA. Select Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced on July 9.
