This Whaler sports roundup includes an update on the boys lacrosse team after their 23-game win streak dating back to April 9th of 2024 was snapped by an elite Cape & Island program, the sailing team following a hard fought win in a home regatta, and the boys tennis team.
Boys Lax Beaten By Nauset 15-7

For the first time in 371 days, the Nantucket boys lacrosse team lost a game. They hosted the Nauset Warriors Tuesday afternoon, one of the top teams in Division 3, and were unable to recover from a tough start to the game as the Warriors scored the first four goals of the match in the first quarter.
“We went down early and got a little winded early,” Nantucket head coach Sam Aloisi said. “They played fast; they always do. We tried to run with them. We played yesterday and we got tired out pretty quick but that is not an excuse. Our clear was pretty bad. They had a good day. They did a good job riding, which is what we do is sort of a laid-back, low-pressure ride. We weren’t really prepared for it. We didn’t execute properly. The biggest thing was possession. We didn’t have the ball. Then when that happens, the defense gets tired after three or four goals. I thought David (Cirillo) did a pretty good job but then again when we did get the ball, we were sloppy… at least in the first half with it.”

Nantucket made it a 4-2 game midway through the second quarter after junior captain Arann Hanlon and senior attacker Miles Beaudette scored in the first four minutes of the quarter. But Nauset, led by senior captain and former Div. 1 lacrosse commit Logan Poulin, scored the next six goals of the game and led 11-3 at halftime. The third Whaler goal was tallied by Noah Stringer.
Hanlon made it 11-4 with Nantucket up a man with 9:53 to go in the third, but Poulin answered 39 seconds later to make it 12-4.
“The second half of the third quarter and the fourth was much better, but sloppy all around,” Aloisi said. “We knew when we got the ball today, we had to take care of it.
“These guys are good,” Aloisi said of Nauset. “They pass the ball well and they shoot quick. This is by far the best team we’ve played. So it’s an eye opener. We have some stuff to work on. It’s alright.”

The last loss for Nantucket was on April 9th, 2024 when they traveled to Falmouth – another Div. 3 powerhouse – and lost 13-6. Aloisi said he actually felt better about how his team played on Tuesday as opposed to that rough outing last year in Falmouth.
“That was worse,” Aloisi said bluntly. “Over there we just sucked. We didn’t do anything right. Our heads weren’t in it over there. I thought the effort today was great. Right to the end really. I think Jake Johnson (senior) came up big in the midfield today. That was sort of his best game I think he’s played. I don’t think anybody really played bad. We just made team mistakes. I think our defense actually played well. We switched it up a little bit, and the guys responded. Nauset really slowed down in the third and into the fourth. But the biggest thing we got to work on is our clear and our ground balls. Everybody’s trying to play hockey with the ball towards the end. Part of that was our guys were just gassed.”

Nantucket, now 4-1 this season as they beat Monomoy 13-3 on Monday. Aloisi said it was a strong effort. The Whalers will have plenty of time to breakdown the film and work on some of the things Aloisi alluded to with their next game not scheduled until Saturday, April 26th at home against Groton-Dunstable Regional High School at 1 p.m.
Sailing Wins Home Regatta

The weather finally cooperated and allowed the Whaler sailing team to host a regatta. They welcomed Cape Cod Academy to the island on Monday with perfect winds and beautiful spring temperatures, and the Whalers were able to grind out a gutsy 3-2 win over one of the top sailing programs on the Cape & Islands.
Nantucket is now 3-0 and their next regatta is scheduled for Wednesday, April 16th at home against CCA once again. Tuesday’s regatta against Sandwich was postponed due to weather. Nantucket will also race on Thursday, April 17th at home against the Barnstable Red Hawks.
Below are some photos taken by assistant coach Jim Meehan during the regatta that he shared with the Current.

Senior Jordan Andrew and first year Elysse Cumberland set the ball rolling on day three in the triple jump. Cumberland bowed out of the competition in 13th place after an 11.85m jump. Andrew stepped up and landed a jump of 11.93m on her first recorded mark before improving to 12.08m on her third attempt. The veteran jumper hovered around the 11.90m area before finally breaking it open on her final attempt. The senior matched her personal best on the final jump of her season, landing a mark of 12.29m to take fourth place. It would be the best finish for the Jumbos on day three.

Purdue Fort Wayne dropping sports
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Purdue Fort Wayne joined a line of schools dropping sports because of budget cuts and the looming era of revenue sharing with athletes, announcing Friday it would discontinue its baseball and softball programs immediately.
The university announced $6 million in budget cuts Thursday, and discontinuing the two sports will save about $1 million.
The Mastadons are members of the Horizon League and Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association and will sponsor 14 Division I sports.
“This is one of the saddest days in my 25 years as a Mastodon,” athletic director Kelley Hartley Hutton said. “We know this news will upset our student-athletes, alumni and fans. It was not made lightly, and we are committed to supporting those affected through this transition.”
Harley Hutton said budget challenges across the university, in combination with changes in the NCAA model, led to a re-evaluation of the athletic program.
After the Mastadons exit, there are now only five baseball schools in the Horizon League which includes Youngstown State. The NCAA requires the conference to have six teams to qualify for an automatic bid in the NCAA tournament. In the 2026 season, the Horizon League will have five before Northern Illinois enters in 2027.
Stephen F. Austin announced Thursday it would drop bowling, men’s and women’s golf and beach volleyball. Eastern Illinois announced on May 12 it would discontinue men’s and women’s tennis.
Guardians tame Tigers again
DETROIT (AP) — Slade Cecconi gave up a run and five hits over six innings, José Ramírez tripled and scored in a two-run first inning and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Detroit Tigers 3-1 on Friday night.
Steven Kwan had three hits and an RBI for Cleveland.
Cecconi (1-1) struck out six and allowed two walks in his second start of the season. Hunter Gaddis followed with two scoreless innings and Emmanuel Clase pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 10th save.
Jackson Jobe (4-1) gave up two runs on four hits and two walks in five innings to take his first career loss. The Tigers won his first eight starts — the longest streak to start a career in franchise history.
Kwan led off the game with a double and Ramírez hit a triple over the head of Javier Báez in center field for a 1-0 lead before Carlos Santana added a two-out RBI single for a 2-0 lead.
The Guardians held the Tigers scoreless for the first 14 1/3 innings of the series, but Spencer Torkelson broke the streak with his 13th homer in the sixth inning.
Bo Naylor led off the ninth with a triple and Kwan made it 3-1 with an RBI single.
Brookfield sells stadium
BROOKFIELD — The Brookfield School District sold the old football field with nearly 9 acres for $196,000 in an auction that ended Monday.
WKBN reported the board of education was informed the buyer is Mohammad Matariya, who lives in the local area.
On Wednesday, the board also approved the purchase of the bleachers that went up for auction. High Steel Rodeo in North Bloomfield purchased two lots of bleachers for $30,792, and the Sheakleyville Community Volunteer Fire Department in Mercer County purchased another set for $22,600.
The George A. Nichols Field was home to the Brookfield football team for 50 years. The Warriors started playing at the new stadium last fall behind the school.
Wieners invade Brickyard
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Give the Borg-Wiener Trophy at Indianapolis Motor Speedway to the Wienermobile affectionately known as Slaw Dog.
In a down-to-the-wire race among the six iconic Wienermobiles that serve as goodwill ambassadors for Oscar Mayer, the hot dog-on-wheels representing the Southeast proved to be the big dog on Carb Day ahead of Sunday’s running of the Indianapolis 500.
It made a dramatic pass of the Wienermobile repping Chicago at the finish line to win the inaugural Wienie 500 on Friday.
The margin was about a half a bun.
“You are standing in a moment in hot dog history right now,” Sarah Oney, who was co-piloting the Wienermobile representing New York with Connor Wolff, told The Associated Press. “This is the first-ever time we have honestly had all six Wienermobiles together and especially at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.”
It was the definition of a wiener-take-all race, too: The driver and co-pilot of the No. 3 dog, who managed to roast the rest of the Wienermobiles on a cool, sunny afternoon, got to stick around for the 109th running of the Indianapolis 500.
The Wienermobiles have been around since 1936 as a promotional vehicle for Oscar Mayer — not to be confused with Louis Meyer, the first three-time winner of the Indy 500. They travel around the country, logging about 20,000 miles annually, though none were probably as important to the hotdoggers on board as the 5 miles they drove on Friday.
Oney and Wolff jumped into the lead when the green flag flew at the historic yard of bricks, and the six Wienermobiles slowly picked up speed until they reached about 65 mph. They were right in each other’s grills down the backstretch, and swapped the lead among themselves several times until the second of two laps, when the No. 4 dog led the field out of Turn 2.
That’s when smoke began pouring from its rear, and that dog was cooked.
The Wienermobile wearing No. 1 assumed the lead as the field headed onto the front stretch, and a crowd of nearly 80,000 fans who had just watched the final practice for the 109th running of the Indianapolis 500 was standing and cheering.
That’s when the Wienermobile from the Southeast, which had doggedly hung around the lead for most of the race, made its big move. It passed the the Wienermobile repping Chicago just in time to relish in the sweet taste of victory.
It might have been the fastest Wieners have gone since Joey Chestnut’s heyday on Coney Island.
“The Indy 500 marks the unofficial kickoff of summer and the start of hot dog season,” said Kelsey Rice, brand communications director at Chicago-based Oscar Mayer. “It’s only fitting that we bring a race of epic proportions to the Speedway and celebrate a timeless tradition: delicious meats and a little friendly competition to kick off a summer of wieners.”

Colorado College wrapped up the 2025 outdoor track and field season with a pair of first-team All-Americans at the NCAA Track and Field National Championships.
Junior Rabbit Barnes crossed the finish line in 3:50.01 in the men’s 1,500m finals. Barnes finished fourth overall with the fastest time in the event in program history. He was just a second behind his school record time of 3:49.04.
Barnes became the second individual athlete for the men’s team to earn All-American honors in the last three years. He joins James Settles who earned All-American honors in 2023 and 2024.
Senior Isabel Olson finished eighth in the women’s 1,500m for her first career track and field All-American nod and the second of her career including cross country. Olson finished with a time of 4:34.93 to join Annabel Arnott (1995) as the only Tigers to finish top eight in the event in program history.
Olson set the program record in the event earlier this season with a time of 4:27.59.
She also reached the finals of the 5K finals and placed 20th overall with a time of 17:15.09.
“It was a great way to wrap up a historical season for the program,” head coach Katie Brescher said. “Rabbit ran a smart and tactical race to get on the podium. Isabel maintained her positioning throughout the race to also be on the podium. Being first-time qualifiers, they handled the pressure well.”

A busy weekend for provincial water polo. The highlight of the day is game 3 of the men’s Serie B play-off semifinals: at the ‘Mori’ in Spezia, at 15 pm, the ‘beautiful’ match will be played between the home team Lerici Sport and Plebiscito Padova. After narrowly losing game 1 last Saturday, coach Sellaroli’s Coccodrilli beat the Venetians on Wednesday, forcing them to a play-off. “It was important to win on a tough pitch like the one in Padova – the coach commented – otherwise we would have already been out of the game. Now we have to take advantage of this last opportunity that we have earned and it doesn’t need any statements: only the facts will count”. Heart and lots of competitive spirit will be the ingredients of this match in front of their home crowd. The club’s women’s team, on the other hand, will take to the field tomorrow, after the setback in the last round against league leaders Project Sport that interrupted the positive streak of Pellegri and her teammates. At 14pm Lerici Sport will be guests at the ‘Cascione’ in Imperia of Rari Nantes, for a challenge between almost equals (only one point separates the two teams in the standings).
“A tough away game against a team that follows us at a short distance – says Sellaroli in the pre-match – in the standings. We must continue to give continuity to the good performance of last Sunday against the first in the standings to consolidate our third position”. The Marina Militare will be aggressive, hunting for one of the two passes available to access the play-offs of the men’s C series. Foti’s boys, fresh from the setback against Varese Olona Nuoto, will not be able to falter against the Bocconi Sport Team, who they will host at the ‘Mori’ today at 17 pm. “We are ready for the last two days of the championship. In the first leg we lost by one playing a match that went badly at the end, our quality is superior to theirs, but maximum attention and we are focused on bringing home the three points” comments the coach, who will have to do without Sisti.
