On Tuesday, NASCAR announced the return of Homestead-Miami Speedway as the NASCAR National Series championship weekend venue for the 2026 season, in what will be part of a new yearly rotating championship venue model.

While NASCAR didn’t divulge the full list of venues that would be part of the rotation, in a Zoom teleconference, Ben Kennedy, the Executive Vice President and Chief Venue and Racing Innovation Officer for NASCAR pulled back to curtain on venues that shouldn’t be expected to be part of the rotation at least in the near future.

Kennedy explained that NASCAR is seeking facilities that produce traditional NASCAR racing, which means Superspeedways like Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway will not be in the consideration at this time.

“Never say never, but I think we’ve unanimously agreed that it needs to look and feel like what we would expect traditional NASCAR racing to look and feel like,” Kennedy explained. “Short tracks, intermediate tracks, mile tracks are all on the board. Superspeedways, I think we all feel like right now we wouldn’t consider that as a championship venue, not that Daytona isn’t a championship caliber venue.”

There are simply too many intangibles at superspeedway races, such as ‘The Big One’, for the sanctioning body to feel comfortable at this time with having a race at Daytona or Talladega decide the championship.

“There are a lot of story lines that come out of those events, and we want to make sure that, when we go to Homestead, Miami, or Phoenix or wherever it might be in the future, that there is a lot of strategy and that a lot of our championship drivers are also contending for the victory at the end of that race.””

In addition to Superspeedways not fitting the bill for what NASCAR is currently looking for in championship venues, Kennedy says road courses are also off the table when it comes to tracks the sanctioning body is currently looking at to fill its need for championship venues in the near future.

“We talked about that. We’ve talked about road courses as well. Again, never say never, but road courses are probably lower on the list as we think about championship venues,” Kennedy said. “So we’re really going to hone in on short tracks, and I would say mile-and-a-halfs for now.”

As far as which tracks NASCAR is targeting to add into the championship venue rotation, Kennedy says the sanctioning body will look at more than just NASCAR-owned properties.

“I think anything is on the table at this point, to be honest, whether it’s NASCAR property or elsewhere,” Kennedy explained. “The great part about it is we have a good relationship with Speedway Motorsports, and they have many prominent events in the playoffs, cutoff races at the Charlotte oval and Bristol, and a handful of others.”

It’ll be interesting to see which tracks are ultimately adopted into the rotating championship venue schedule in the coming seasons.

McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown and United Autosports co-owner Richard Dean were on hand in the Le Mans fan village on Saturday morning to show off the Woking brand’s forthcoming Hypercar to the public for the first time.

The new prototype from McLaren is a Dallara-based LMDh, powered by a V6 twin-turbo engine developed in conjunction with Autotecnica Motori (ATM). It is set to compete in the top class of the FIA WEC from 2027 onwards.

The reveal of the first show car today follows news on Friday from McLaren that James Barclay has been appointed as team principal.

“This is what it’s all about. I’m a big fan of motorsport, and we’re so happy to be here in front of the fans with our new Hypercar. This will be the McLaren United AS Hypercar,” Brown said. “It is designed by our automotive group in collaboration with our racing team.”

“It’s a dream for United to partner with McLaren. They have set the standard high,” Richard Dean, in conversation with RACER after the reveal, added. “I feel ready for this, the timing is perfect for us. We’ve been watching others move from LMP2 to Hypercar and be successful. It gives us a lot of confidence that we can do the same job, and without a doubt, McLaren is the right partner.

“This has been in the making for a while, preparing for this and working with them. The level is so high, and that motivates us. We had time last night to reflect as a team on what was a crazy day yesterday. When I went to bed, all I could think of was this. You’re lucky to be around at a certain period in history, and the WEC right now is perfect. The fans have voted.

“As for the car, I’ve been looking at CAD drawings and photos for a while, but last night was the first time I’d seen the car. It took me by surprise. It looks incredible in the flesh, and with the fans being there today, taking the cover off, it was a delight to see the reaction. Hearing it’s a beautiful and fast-looking car is always a good sign.”

MEXICO CITY — Travel woes forced NASCAR to adjust its schedule of events at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City.

NASCAR condensed the two Friday Xfinity Series practice sessions into one that will happen Saturday. They also moved the two Friday NASCAR Cup Series practice sessions to later in the day. The first NASCAR Mexico Series race of the weekend will also take place at a different time Friday.

MORE: NASCAR TV schedule this weekend: Mexico City 2025

NASCAR shifted the schedule around after teams, like Haas Factory Team, had issues getting from Charlotte to Mexico City. HFT had an issue with their chartered flight and had to drive to Atlanta to catch a commercial flight instead.

Other teams, like DGM Racing, had engine issues with their plane and had to delay their plans.

This is the first time NASCAR has raced in Mexico since 2008 when the Xfinity Series raced at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez for the fourth and final time in its first run there. NASCAR’s top three national series, in general, haven’t raced outside of the United States since the Craftsman Truck Series went to Canadian Tire Motorsports Park, in Bowmanville, Ontario, in 2019.

Through the Gears host Wyatt Watson gets you ready for race weekend with the best bets for Mexico City following a profit of 7.5 units from the Cup race at Michigan International Speedway thanks to the help of some successful prop picks.

Can the odds-on favorite Shane van Gisbergen (+375 odds) use his road course ability to get himself into the playoffs, or could a different road course ringer or the usual suspects take care of business?

Also, Watson takes a quick look at Sunday night’s NTT IndyCar Series oval race at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway and shares his pick to win the race at the 1.25-mile oval.
