Terry Martz, 70, of Wautoma, passed away peacefully in the early morning of May 31, 2025, from heart failure complicated by kidney cancer treatment. Born on October 21, 1954, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to George and Dolores Martz, Terry lived a life defined by his love for family, community, and the outdoors.

Terry’s passion for sports was obvious through his years of coaching and officiating. It was while working at playgrounds in Milwaukee that he met the love of his life, Cindy, whom he married on August 28, 1976. Together, they built a beautiful family.

In 1981, Terry’s career in the insurance business led him to Wautoma, where he formed a meaningful connection with Bob Frederick of the Frederick Insurance Agency. Inspired by the tight-knit community, Terry and his family settled in Wautoma, and in 1992, he purchased the agency from Bob, renaming it Martz Insurance Agency. He took great pride in serving his clients and making a lasting impact on the community he cherished.

An avid outdoorsman, Terry found joy in hunting at a family property in Adams County and fishing in Tomahawk, another favorite getaway. In addition, he enjoyed memorable Canadian fishing trips with friends and family and elk hunts in Montana. He cherished traveling to Cancun, Mexico, where he and Cindy made unforgettable memories. Known for his infectious humor, Terry was a master storyteller and loved sharing jokes, bringing laughter and warmth to everyone around him.

Terry’s deep Catholic faith was a cornerstone of his life. He generously donated his time as a chaplain or Catholic presider at King Veterans Home and Redgranite Prison, where he shared God’s word and provided spiritual guidance, touching countless lives with his compassion and dedication. In his later years, Terry was also proud of his involvement in St. Joseph’s Finance Council and Buildings and Grounds Committee, as well as his place on the boards of ThedaCare Wild Rose, and Stoneridge Meat and Country Market.

A true leader in his community, Terry served in multiple civic organizations. With his passion for coaching, officiating, and youth sports, he took pride in his involvement with local athletics. In late winter, Terry’s service to the community shone through when he dressed up to visit nursing homes, daycares, group celebrations, parades, and church Masses, reminding everyone of the true meaning of Christmas. You’d see him around, but you’d never find him when Santa was present. He took his duties very seriously, leaving a legacy of service and generosity.

Terry is survived by his beloved wife, Cindy; his children, Jennifer (Dan) Reis, Jeff (Sara) Martz, and Katie Martz; grandchildren, Jack and Anna Martz; wiener dogs Peanut, Penny, and Chippy-Chip; his brother-in-law, Alex Jankowski; his sisters-in-law, Debbie (Gary) Klenz, Lisa (Ben) Guido, and Jackie (Matt) Wecker; his aunt, Ellen (Rich) Naumann; his godmother, Pat Bahr; and honorary family member, Sister Mary Ellen Doherty, who held a special place in his heart. He is also survived by numerous other family members and friends whom he cherished deeply. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Dolores Martz; his sister, Christine Jankowski; and his in-laws, Bud and Ruth Michaels.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 AM on Monday, June 9, 2025, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wautoma. The family will greet relatives and friends at the church on Monday, June 9, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Leikness Funeral Home, Wautoma is assisting the family with arrangements. www.leiknessfuneralhome.com

The company organizing the George Pickens Youth Football Camp has walked back its criticism of the former Steelers receiver for canceling his participation at the event.

Headlines out of Pittsburgh on Thursday blasted the often-mercurial wideout for backing out of the camp, a commitment he reportedly said he would honor even after being traded to the Cowboys in early May. But in an email sent to the families of camp registrants earlier this week, the company was rather colorful in explaining how Pickens had “decided to walk back on his word” and went on to trash him for his “disappointing lack of accountability” and “disregard for the families and children who were excited to meet him.”

Now TruEdge Sports calls the tone of that email “inappropriate” and says their statement “did not accurately reflect the full scope of communication or the context surrounding the event.”

The company has revealed that it was communication only with Pickens’s representatives- and not with Pickens himself- that “led to confusion about the camp’s status and future direction.”

News of Pickens’s cancellation- breaking just a couple days before the camp was to be held- made the development seem like the receiver was flaking out at the last minute, but according to their own email, TruEdge actually learned of the change in plans sometime the previous week.

That did not stop the company from painting Pickens as the irresponsible party who had left everyone high and dry with next to no warning, a suggestion they now say they regret.

“Regrettably, the language used in our original message mischaracterized George’s original intent and actions. While our frustrations stemmed from the uncertainty surrounding the event, it was never our intention to publicly question George’s professionalism, integrity, or commitment to the community. We now understand that the tone and implications of our message were not only inappropriate but inconsistent with our values as an organization.”

Pickens has been working with his new Cowboys teammates as part of the official offseason program and was also spotted in social media posts just this week as being one of the offensive playmakers attending quarterback Dak Prescott’s annual retreat.

In its follow-up email to camp attendees, TruEdge acknowledges that the 24-year-old, who is entering a contract year, has been “navigating a significant career transition during this time and that his team kept open lines of communication with us.”

The camp has been rescheduled for July 20 in Pittsburgh, with other Steelers players vowing to attend in Pickens’s place.

That will be the day Pickens and his new Cowboys teammates report to training camp in Oxnard, Calif.

The Lake Conference Network, a unified streaming service for high school sports and fine arts events, is set to launch Aug. 15, officials announced Thursday.

The online platform will cover all athletic competitions and performances across the eight-member Lake Conference: Buffalo, Eden Prairie, Edina, Hopkins, Maple Grove, Minnetonka, St. Michael-Albertville, and Wayzata.

Described as the first conference-wide streaming initiative of its kind in Minnesota, the network will broadcast all levels of competition – from ninth grade to varsity – across 16 sports. It will also include non-conference home games hosted by Lake Conference schools.

Varsity events will feature play-by-play announcers, and each season – fall, winter and spring – will include a weekly highlight show. The network also plans to expand its reach through dedicated social media coverage of student-athletes, teams and schools.

“This partnership will allow Lake Conference students educational opportunities through their school and give them the experience in a sports and media pathway earlier than ever before,” said Troy Stein, an assistant principal and the activities director at Edina High School.

The network will be run in partnership with LiveBarn Minnesota, a digital broadcast company that specializes in livestreaming youth and amateur sports. The five-year agreement will be exclusive to the Lake Conference Network website.

“It has been a long time coming since we first introduced the idea during the 2012–13 season,” said Pete Waggoner, chief operating officer of LiveBarn Minnesota. “The Lake Conference is considered one of the best conferences in Minnesota – and the nation. To be affiliated with these schools is a huge honor.”

In addition to sports coverage, the Lake Conference Network will stream live fine arts and music performances from member schools’ auditoriums.

The borough’s 3rd/4th grade girls softball team and 8U boys travel baseball team both completed undefeated seasons en route to league titles. Their achievements were recognized by Mayor Keith Misciagna and the Borough Council at the June 24 council meeting, where players and coaches from both squads received certificates of recognition.

“These young athletes are what Park Ridge is all about—talent, teamwork, and heart,” said Misciagna. “We’re so proud of their accomplishments.”

Boyd, 30, completed his ninth NFL season with the Tennessee Titans after eight years in Cincinnati. The Bengals drafted Boyd in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He owns 552 receptions for 6,390 yards and 31 touchdowns as a professional.

Clairton officially renamed its stadium “Tyler Boyd Stadium” last year and installed new turf, press box, and bleachers.

Boyd spoke on what his camp means to him, how the community is coming together after losing two football players to gun violence, and the chance Boyd could return to Pittsburgh and play for his hometown Steelers.
