LONGMONT — Junior goalkeeper Addison Blick preserved Mead girls soccer’s three-week shutout streak with a dazzling back-to-back-to-back deny on a fast break Wednesday night.

“She stood on her head there,” coach Shane Adler said of his goalie’s jaw-dropping moment during the sixth-seeded Mavericks’ 6-0 win over No. 27 Thomas Jefferson in the first round of the 4A playoffs.

Blick’s perspective of it will have to wait, though. With the game in hand, her coach subbed her out with about 10 minutes remaining so she could get to her choir concert on time.

Sing like there’s no tomorrow, Blick. She’s already helped give the Mavericks another day.

The Mavericks scored three times in the opening half. Sophomore Nataly Joesten put in her first goal of the season 39 seconds into the game before junior Elena Gomez then added her first of the year in the 20th minute. Senior Addison Martinez delivered her third in the 27th.

Blick kept it there after halftime. Her best moment came when thwarting a breakaway in the 47th minute. She hit the ground for an initial save near the top of the box, then while still down, she stretched out to stop not one, but two rebound chances. Finally able to corral the third try in her arms, it helped preserve a shutout streak which goes all the way back to the middle of April for the Mavericks.

It’s been 31 straight goals for Mead since then.

“Her saves were phenomenal tonight,” senior Katy Adler said of Blick. “The three saves kept our momentum going, and it was just amazing.”

The finishing touches of the night came courtesy of Adler and her scoring co-star, junior Maddy Wright.

In a span of 66 seconds in the final 10 minutes, Adler, the two-time Longmont Times-Call girls soccer player of the year, sandwiched her 22nd goal of the season — tied for third-most in 4A — in between two from Wright, who tallied her 15th and 16th. Adler also had two assists, giving her a career-most 50 points this spring.

She and the Mavs will look for more in Saturday’s second round as they host No. 11 Air Academy. The last time the Kadets came to Mead was in the 2022 4A first round, when they won as a 24 seed. Adler was a freshman then.

“Other than (some tweaks here and there), we’re ready. We’re ready to go,” Adler said. “We come to practice and work hard. It’s a team effort. We’re always working together. It’s good. We’re ready.”

The Mavericks (13-2) were the only 4A local team to advance in the postseason after No. 25 Skyline bowed out at No. 8 Dakota Ridge, 6-0.

In 2A, No. 12 Dawson beat No. 21 James Irwin 3-0 on Wednesday behind two goals from Kanoe Bihag, who now has 131 goals in her high school career.

In 5A, No. 9 Boulder, No. 10 Broomfield, No. 13 Legacy, No. 17 Fairview all advanced Tuesday.

The first round will end Thursday with 3A — featuring No. 4 Prospect Ridge Academy, No. 5 Jefferson Academy, No. 12 Peak to Peak, No. 15 Longmont and No. 25 Holy Family.

Friday is 5A’s second round, while the rest of the classes will continue Saturday.

Williamsburg earns top seed in softball draw

Williamsburg’s hot start to the 2025 season, when it raced out to a 13-0 record, helped cement the Ladycats as the top seed in the Division V, Region 20, Southwest 1 bracket.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association released its softball tournament draw May 4. The state championships will take place June 4-8 at Firestone Stadium in Akron.

The Ladycats (16-3) will host No. 13-seeded Mariemont (3-11) at 5 p.m. May 12 at Williamsburg High School in the bracket’s opening round. The winner will play 10-seeded Georgetown (4-14) in the second round at 5 p.m. May 14. That game could be at Williamsburg before neutral-site play takes effect.

The Ladycats have the easiest route through the district. The highest-seeded team they could play is Miami East (15-3), the No. 2-ranked team in the bracket and reigning Southwest 1 District champion, which beat Williamsburg in last season’s district championship game. A potential district final rematch would be May 22 at a neutral site.

The Ladycats, who are on their way to a National Division title, are 9-1 in the division. Their lone defeat came against Bethel-Tate (7-2, 9-7), which is the No. 2 seed in the Division V, Southwest 3 bracket. The Lady Tigers have won four straight and seven of their last nine after opening the season with a 2-5 start.

Bethel-Tate opens its tournament play against 14-seeded Finneytown (0-10) at 5 p.m. May 14 at Bethel-Tate High School. The winner will play the winner between No. 3 Reading (14-4) and No. 13 Clark Montessori (1-10) in a district semifinal at 5 p.m. May 19 in a location to be announced. The Lady Tigers are the reigning Southwest 2 District champions.

The Summit High School girls soccer team concluded the spring season with a loss to Golden High School in Breckenridge on Saturday, May 3.

Originally scheduled to take place earlier in the season, Summit hosted the Golden Demons on a sunny, warm spring day in Breckenridge. The Tigers attempted to conclude the season with a win, but they were not able to net a goal against the Demons. Golden defeated Summit, 4-0.

Summit ends the spring season with a record of 6-7-1 overall and 3-3 in league play. The record matches the same amount of wins the team saw in head coach Makenzie Meade’s first season as head coach last spring. The program has not surpassed six wins on a season in at least the past 16 years.

Junior Jaime Yim Nadler led the team in goals throughout the season with a total of five with senior Olivia Lyman netting three of her own. Senior Ella Kirschner and junior Penelope Weitake led the stat sheet in assists with two each.

In terms of goaltending, junior Rowan Connelly recorded a total of 101 saves and had five shut-outs.

Summit finished the season ranked third overall in the 4A Western Slope league. Eagle Valley won the league title with a record of 4-1-1 and Battle Mountain took second. Both Eagle Valley and Battle Mountain were one of the 32 teams to make the 2025 Class 4A soccer state playoffs.

Summit will graduate eight players from its varsity roster including Lyman, Kirschner, Delilah Staberg, Sammi Olson, Sadie Slahetka, Ariana Vasquez, Shaylah Nelson and Avery Eytel. The Tigers are expected to have 18 players return next year including a group of eight juniors.
