Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.

CARLSBAD, Calif. — For the fourth consecutive season, Vanderbilt women’s golf will compete in the NCAA Championship as the Commodores tee off Friday at Omni La Costa Resort.
The Dores are the 19th seed entering the weekend at the 6,330-yard, par-72 North Course. Vanderbilt will tee off at the first hole at 6:52 a.m. PT/8:52 a.m. CT in Friday’s opening round. In Saturday’s second round, the Dores will play in the afternoon flight beginning at 12:12 p.m. PT from hole No. 10. Vanderbilt will play alongside Oklahoma State and Kansas State in each of the first two rounds.
“It feels really good to be back at La Costa,” head coach Greg Allen said. “It’s nice that four of our five girls played here last year so we are definitely a little more familiar with the course. After a year of growing in, it seems as if the greens are softer, which is a good thing and will hopefully benefit us.
“Just like regionals, we will need a total team effort each day and to come out ready to play. Our focus the next three days will be trying to execute our game plan and put ourselves in position to make it to Monday. If we can do that, then match play is possible – but again, we need to take it one shot at a time. The girls seem to be in a good place, have the right mindset and are ready to go.”
Vanderbilt’s lineup features the same five Commodores from regionals, as juniors Tillie Claggett and Lynn Lim, sophomores Sara Im and Ava Merrill, and freshman Angelina Tolentino are set to take on La Costa. Freshman Claire Henson will serve as the Commodores’ alternate for the championship. Four of Vandy’s five in the lineup competed for the Dores in last season’s NCAA Championship on the North Course. Vanderbilt finished 20th in 2023-24, marking the best finish in a decade for the black and gold.
The NCAA Championship consists of 30 teams competing in the first three rounds of stroke play. Following Sunday’s third round, the top 15 teams advance to a fourth round of stroke play on Monday for the chance to reach match play. The top eight teams following Monday will battle for the title in match play on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Live scoring for the NCAA Championship is available on SCOREBOARD. The Golf Channel will broadcast the championship beginning with Monday’s fourth round.

MADAWASKA, Maine (WAGM) – For the first year in school history, Madawaska formed their own AAU boy’s basketball team, an offseason team competing in the Maine Grassroots Basketball League.
This comes the same year as their record breaking season.
Junior Isaac Beaulieu said, “Making the switch in coaches last year, we put in a new system so we had to work some things out but this year I think we really saw a lot of growth and this spring AAU season is only helping that.”
The team finished third in the final weekend of competition on May 10th.
“This offseason ball definitely isn’t about winning, it’s about playing together, building chemistry, and just getting better as a team,” said Quinn Pelletier, 8th grader who played on varsity team, “It’s been fun, I like going down, playing with people from my team, I know what they do, I know what they like so it’s easy.”
“It’s definitely been a lot of fun playing AAU with my own teammates, like we already have that chemistry,” said Thibeault.
Brayden Pelletier, junior at Madawaska High School said, “It’s definitely going well, we’re not going out there to win all these tournaments, we’re there to grow as a team and build that team chemistry even in the offseason.”
“Anytime I can get out with the guys, get some experience on the court is really beneficial,” said Isaac Beaulieu, junior at Madawaska High School.
The MadTown Owls were the only team in the Maine Grassroots Basketball League that was only made up of one school.
“It’s nice to see that we’re competing with these teams that have guys from four or five different schools, it’s nice to see that we’re out there winning some games, losing some close games,” said B. Pelletier.
“We play a little bit harder teams and it was nice because we got more competition, gotta love that,” said Thibeault.
8th grader who also played on the varsity team this year, Bradley Kennedy said, “Even if it’s not for a state tournament you can still build on your skills, and being able to see players that you’ll see in the regular season and that you might meet at states is always a good thing.”
Bradley Kennedy gained some experience with the Owls throughout the regular season, but he says this springs AAU helped the most.
“It’s actually been great because it’s just building on chemistry, able to work better together, and it’s always fun to mess around, not mess around but it’s just a more fun experience,” added Kennedy, “Most of these guys have been playing together since they were young so it’s really good, but being able to play in 8th grade is even better because you get to build even more. I think I’ve built my skills so much to where, I’m obviously not better than these guys, but I can compete with them now, being able to practice with them these last three months.”
The 2019 Mr. Maine Basketball award winner, Matt Fleming was the head coach of this squad.
“It’s really nice bringing that knowledge and experience to the team, just giving us more opportunities to grow, and listen to him and his experiences, giving us his opinions on stuff, it’s really nice,” said Beaulieu.
Shawn Pelletier, the varsity boys coach at Madawaska, is restricted by MPA rules to not coach the team in the offseason.
Madawaska is laying the foundation to continue the growth of their boys’ basketball program.
The team will lose Thibeault to graduation, but he is confident that the team will win a state championship in the coming seasons.
