West Coast Conference Announces 2025 Beach Volleyball Awards

Published

on

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – LMU won its sixth straight West Coast Conference Championship last Friday in Santa Monica, Calif., and the Lions nearly pulled off a clean sweep of the 2025 West Coast Conference all-conference and major awards, as announced by the Conference on Wednesday.

LMU’s major awards include John Mayer winning Coach of the Year, Chloe Hooker winning Defensive Player of the Year, and the Pair of the Year went to Isabelle Reffel and Magdalena Rabitsch. LMU’s Tanon Rosenthal was named Co-Freshman of the Year with Pepperdine’s Emma Eden.

All-conference honors and major individual awards were selected solely by the seven conference head coaches.

Reffel and Rabitsch finished the 2025 campaign with an overall record of 35-4. Playing primarily on the No. 4 court, the tandem went 32-4 there and 3-0 on the third court. Going back to April 11, the pair is enjoying a 10-match winning streak, including three wins in last week’s West Coast Conference Tournament. Reffel and Rabitsch own three wins over UCLA this season and wins over Stanford and USC, as well. Reffel and Rabitsch won West Coast Conference Pair of the Week two times this season.

Mayer collected his sixth straight West Coast Conference Coach of the Year honor after leading the Lions back into the NCAA Championship as a No. 4 seed. LMU concluded the regular season with a record of 35-6, and Mayer’s Lions enter the NCAA Tournament riding a seven-match winning streak. LMU boasts multiple wins over the top-ranked teams in the country according to the AVCA national polls including No. 1 TCU and No. 3 UCLA.

The 2023 West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, Hooker adds another Conference major award to her resume. Compiling a record of 28-10 on the courts this season, Hooker primarily teamed with Vilhelmiina Prihti on either the No. 1 or No. 2 court. She and Prihti garnered a win on April 11 over No. 1 TCU. Hooker also played on LMU’s second court with Jaeya Brach and Anna Pelloia. Hooker and Pelloia boasted Conference Pair of the Week accolades once in 2025. Hooker becomes the fifth straight Lion to claim this award.

Rosenthal is the third Lion to capture West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year accolades, and the first since Hooker in 2023. Rosenthal boasted Conference Pair of the Week recognition three times this season, the most among the Lions who won all but one of the conference weekly awards this season. She totaled a record of 33-5 this season, playing primarily on the No. 5 court with Giuliana Poletti-Corrales. They will head to the NCAA Tournament having won their last eight matches in a row.

Eden compiled an overall record of 25-8 this season. She competed primarily on the No. 3 court with Ella Foti, notching a record of 23-7 with her between the No. 2 and No. 3 courts. She also went 2-1 with Madison Oriskovich on the No. 2 court. Eden becomes the fourth Wave to win Freshman of the Year. Kaydon Myers won the award last season, while McKenna Thomas earned a share of the award in 2022 and Brook Bauer won it in 2018.

The Lions and Pepperdine comprised the entire all-conference first team with seven Lions and three Waves being named to the all-conference first team. Three more Lions made the all-conference second team with Santa Clara matching that total on the second team, while Saint Mary’s picked up a pair of second-team selections.

Pepperdine’s Kate Clermont and McKenna Thomas earned first-team accolades for the third straight season. Hooker garnered all-conference recognition for the third straight season, and she made her second appearance on the all-conference first team after also being named to that team as a freshman in 2023. Michelle Shaffer garnered first-team recognition for the third time, second time at LMU, after also being an honoree in 2022 with Santa Clara. Pelloia garnered first-team recognition for the second straight season.

SoCal natives team up to compete in LA28 beach volleyball – NBC Los Angeles

Published

on

Two Southern California natives announced Thursday they are teaming up to chase gold in beach volleyball during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.  World champion and two-time Olympian Kelly Cheng and former USC teammate Megan Kraft have set their sights on qualifying for the 2028 Olympics.

“Everything has been like a whirlwind, but in the best way,” Kraft said. “I’m just really excited for it to keep going.”

The new partners were All-Americans and won multiple NCAA national titles while they competed for the Trojans.

The two share a love for their alma mater and have faith in one another.

“Beach volleyball is like (a) marriage between partners,” Cheng said. “I feel like Meg has had to make a lot of very big decisions. She’s 23, and I’ve just been absolutely impressed (by) how she’s handled every step of the way.”

Cheng, from Fullerton, and Kraft, from San Diego, want to compete in front of a home crowd and play on a global stage.

“I think you’ll see it on the court, the joy of the way we play and pursuing this, not just for ourselves individually, but for each other and for our team and for the United States,” Cheng said. “I think it’s so much bigger than just the two of us.”

Beach volleyball will be played at Alamitos Beach Stadium in Long Beach during the 2028 Games.

24 women’s teams will qualify for beach volleyball. As a host nation, the U.S. is guaranteed one team, with the possibility of qualifying a second team.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. –  The UC Santa Barbara Men’s Volleyball team served off their 2026 campaign with a victory over Kentucky State, taking down the Thorobreds 3-0 on Thursday afternoon in their first match of the ASICS Invitational.

Redshirt freshman Raglan Kear took to the court for the first time in his collegiate career and crushed, leading the team with six kills and two block assists. Veteran Owen Loncar also launched six kills, and both hit .455.

Ben Pearson followed up with four kills as well as three service aces, tying his career high in the stat. The team as a whole totaled 11 aces. Cole Schobel tossed 19 assists and led the team in digs with seven.

Santa Barbara put up six block assists and George Bruening locked a solo block. Andreas Schuetz matched Kear’s two assists and had two aces of his own.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Men’s Volleyball Falls to UC Irvine in Season Opener

Published

on

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Men’s Volleyball opened its 2025 season with a loss to UC Irvine on Thursday night at the ASICS Tournament, hosted by UC Santa Barbara.

The Crimson showed flashes of offensive efficiency throughout the match, highlighted by a strong second set in which Harvard finished with a .360 kill percentage. Sawyer Nichols led the team with six kills, while Quinn Bishop followed with five to pace the attack.

Zach Berty, Brian Thomas, and Owen Woolbert also contributed offensively, each recording multiple kills as Harvard spread production across the lineup. One of the Crimson’s key strengths on the night was its ability to navigate UC Irvine’s block, with swings frequently deflecting off the hands for out-of-bounds points and helping extend rallies.

The match also marked the first career appearances for Eric Su and Kai Gan, who both saw action in the season opener. Adrian Shevchuk delivered a strong performance at setter, effectively distributing the offense and keeping Harvard’s attack in rhythm throughout the match. Thomas Phung was a standout in the back row, making multiple vital saves to keep points alive and allow Harvard to stay competitive in extended rallies.

Despite The Crimson’s best efforts, UC Irvine claimed the win in three sets.

Harvard Highlights

Harvard will look to carry forward its offensive efficiency and rally control as they face CSUN on Friday, January 9th at 5:00pm ET.

GOLETA, Calif. — Junior Jalen Phillips led all hitters with 15 kills and sophomore Hank Kaufman added a career-high 14 as CSUN opened the 2026 season with a four-set victory over Maryville (Mo.) at the Asics Invitational on Thursday night at UCSB’s Rob Gym.

The Matadors pulled away late to win 25-23, 25-20, 23-25, 25-21, hitting an efficient .318 (50-16-107) as a team. Sophomore Owen Douphner made his first career start at setter and posted 39 assists, three kills, four digs, one ace, and one block.

CSUN was out-aced (5-3) and out-blocked (6-5) by the Saints, but wound up posting 37 team digs to 34 for Maryville. The Matadors, who totaled 50 kills to the Saints’ 49, also forced Maryville into 22 hitting errors as the Saints hit .235 (49-22-115) as a team.

Phillips, who finished with a match-high 18.0 points, hit .300 on 30 swings and was effective from the service line with one ace. Kaufman hit .429 on 28 swings to go with four digs and a pair of assists. Sophomore Joao Avila added nine kills (.250), and Shane Nhem chipped in seven kills on 14 errorless swings to hit .500.

CSUN controlled the first two sets behind a balanced offense and steady sideout play, then responded after Maryville extended the match with a strong third set. The Matadors hit .217 in the fourth set while limiting the Saints to a .000 clip in the fourth to seal the win.

Maryville was led by Aiden Whitemountain and Makai Scott, who each had 10 kills to lead the Saints.

CSUN improves to 1-0 on the season, while Maryville dropped its opener to fall to 0-1.

HEAD COACH THEO EDWARDS SAID

“It’s nice to get the first one out of the way. Maryville is a fantastic team; they did some really nice things and challenged us. Hank (Kaufman) was fantastic, hitting over .400 and Shane (Nhem) was really efficient and at times had some really nice blocks at the net. I felt that Jalen (Phillips) was good too, especially coming off an injury, he hit .300 and looked at times like himself, which was nice to see.”

UP NEXT

CSUN plays its second match of the 2026 Asics Invitational on Friday, taking on Harvard at 2 p.m. at Rob Gym on the UCSB campus.

Samuel, Kosgei Named to Bowerman Preseason Watch List – New Mexico Lobos

Published

on

New Mexico’s Habtom Samuel and Pamela Kosgei will begin the 2026 indoor season among the frontrunners for The Bowerman – annually awarded to the top athlete in collegiate track and field – after both were named to the award’s preseason watch list released on Wednesday.

It’s the first time in UNM history in which both a male and female Lobo athlete open the season on the Bowerman Watch List.

Both athletes are no stranger to the award – Kosgei concluded the 2025 track season as a finalist after sweeping the 5,000m and 10,000m titles outdoors and posting Top-5 all-time collegiate performances in three different events, while Samuel made the watch list multiple times in the last two seasons and made the cut as a semifinalist in 2024. Kosgei was the first Mountain West athlete — man or woman — to be named a finalist.

Samuel and Kosgei both rank among the best in the nation in the indoor 5,000m after strong season-opening marks in Boston in December. Samuel leads the nation with a 13:05.21 clocking, while Kosgei ranks third in the nation with a 15:05.41 time – the duo finished second and third in the event at 2024 NCAA Indoor Championships last March.

Both will be looking to reach the top of the podium for the first time indoors after winning national titles outdoors. Samuel is coming off his first NCAA cross country title after leading the UNM men to a national runner-up team finish in November.

New Mexico gets the spring semester of competition started with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational Jan. 23-24 at the ABQ Convention Center, with both Samuel and Kosgei expected to compete in the mile. All UNM home meets will be available to stream via FloTrack, with meet day updates, behind-the-scenes content and more at @UNMLoboXCTF on IG and X.

ABOUT THE BOWERMAN
The Bowerman, which debuted in 2009 and is named after former University of Oregon coach Bill Bowerman, is presented annually by the USTFCCCA to the most outstanding male and female athlete in NCAA and NAIA track & field.

Members of The Bowerman Advisory Board produce award watch lists by voting on their current top-10 “who’s who” among collegiate track & field athletes. The “watch list” represents the group’s consensus top 10 for that update. Those “receiving votes” are listed on at least one member’s top 10 but did not garner enough votes to be listed in the consensus top 10. There are a total of eight watch lists during the season.
