What to know ahead of the first round of the NASCAR in-season tournament at Atlanta

NASCAR’s first in-season tournament begins Saturday night at Atlanta.

The Quaker State 400 is the first race of the five that will make up the head-to-head contest. Dubbed the “In-Season Challenge,” the winner of the tournament will receive $1 million — the same amount given to the winner of the All-Star Race — and was implemented after the idea was floated by Denny Hamlin on his podcast a year ago.

Coincidentally, Hamlin is the No. 1 seed for the tournament. He’s got Ty Dillon in the first round.

How it works

The tournament field includes 32 drivers who are paired against each other via their seeds for Saturday night’s race. The highest-finishing driver in each matchup moves on. If Hamlin finishes fifth and Dillon is 25th, Hamlin is on to the next round.

With 36 full-time drivers in the Cup Series, the field for the tournament was determined via the top 32 drivers in the points standings after the Nashville race. Over the last three races, the seeds were determined via average finish. Hamlin got the top seed for the tournament because he had the best average finish at Michigan, Mexico City and Pocono.

However, Hamlin did expose a possible flaw in NASCAR’s seeding process. He missed the Mexico City race for the birth of his son and only competed in two of the three races. Missing the race didn’t cost Hamlin at all in the seeding process. While other drivers’ seeds were determined via an average of three races, Hamlin’s seed was only from his win at Michigan and his second-place finish at Pocono.

Here is a look at the bracket:

After Atlanta, the second round will happen during the street race in Chicago on July 6 and the quarterfinals will occur at Sonoma. The final two races of the in-season tournament will be held at Dover and Indianapolis, and the champion will be crowned at the Brickyard.

All five races of the in-season tournament will be broadcast on TNT. The network returns to NASCAR television coverage this season for the five races before NBC takes over for the rest of the season.

Here’s a look at the seeds and the 16 first-round matchups taking place at Atlanta.

Fox Factory, a designer and manufacturer of shocks and other products for specialty sports and on- and off-road vehicles, released its second-quarter financial results on Aug. 8, with year-over-year net sales up 7.6%.

Although the company saw revenue increases compared to the same period last year, Fox Factory reported just $2.7 million in net income, down from $5.4 million it took in the second quarter of 2024.

“We delivered significant progress in the second quarter with $375 million in net sales, representing growth across all three segments, both sequentially and year-over-year,” says Mike Dennison, Fox’s CEO. ““We’ve built a strong foundation for enhanced profitability as we navigate an evolving tariff landscape. Our proactive cost reduction and working capital improvement initiatives are helping us manage through this period.

Q2 financial results

Net sales for Q2 were $374.9 million, an increase of 7.6%, compared to $348.5 million in Q2 last year. The company says the increase reflects an 11% increase in Specialty Sports Group sales, a 6.5% increase in Aftermarket Application Group sales, and a 4.9% increase in Powered Vehicles Group sales.

The increase in SSG sales is related to the stabilization in bike sales. The increase in AAG sales is driven by increased demand for aftermarket products, while high interest rates, high vehicle costs, and macroeconomic conditions continue to impact dealers and consumers. The increase in PVG net sales is primarily due to the expansion of the motorcycle business, which offset lower industry demand in the automotive original equipment product lines.

Total operating expenses were $98.5 million, or 26.3% of net sales, for Q2, compared to $92.4 million, or 26.5% of net sales in Q2 2024. Operating expenses increased by $6.1 million, driven by organizational restructuring initiatives, R&D, and sales and marketing to support future growth and product innovation.

Net income in Q2 was $2.7 million, compared to $5.4 million last year.

Q3 guidance

For the third quarter of fiscal 2025, the Fox Factory says it expects net sales in the range of $370 million to $390 million.

For the fiscal year 2025, in consideration of the company’s year-to-date performance and current visibility to tariff impacts, it says it expects net sales in the range of $1.45 billion to $1.51 billion.

While the impact of the tariff policies on demand remains uncertain, new and expanded tariffs are expected to continue to pose significant challenges for the industries that the Fox serves. For 2025, the company says its pre-mitigated tariff expense has increased from prior expectations of approximately $38 million to upwards of $50 million. However, Fox has identified countermeasures to partially offset these impacts and believes it can absorb this unmitigated component in its updated guidance for the full year 2025.

Lexington, NC (August 12, 2025) – DraftKings has been designated as the exclusive sports betting operator of Kaulig Racing and Ty Dillon.

As part of the agreement, the DraftKings logo will be prominently featured on the No. 10 Chevrolet, driven by Dillon, for two upcoming races this season at World Wide Technology Raceway in St. Louis and Kansas Speedway in Kansas City.

In addition to DraftKings branding on Kaulig Racing’s No. 10 Chevrolet, the logo will also be displayed on Dillon’s fire suit, the pit crew uniforms and the team’s pit wall infrastructure in the select events.

“I am passionate about delivering fans the best experience possible, which is why it is so exciting to be working alongside DraftKings,” said Dillon. “It’s an iconic brand that’s become synonymous with innovation and fan engagement, offering a responsible and entertaining way for fans to get even more invested in the action. I’m proud to have DraftKings on the No. 10 Chevrolet, and honored to have them join us this season.”

DraftKings and NASCAR share a longstanding relationship focused on enhancing fan engagement and delivering an exceptional fan experience.

Earlier this season, NASCAR introduced the inaugural In-Season Challenge presented by DraftKings, a five-race competition designed to bring a new level of excitement to the sport. Utilizing a traditional bracket format, the top 32 drivers were matched in weekly head-to-head contests, with the field narrowing by half each round.

As the No. 32 seed, Dillon had an uphill battle from the start, but with perseverance and fight, finished the In-Season Challenge in second place.

Throughout the Challenge, Dillon faced No. 1 seed Denny Hamlin in Round 1 at Atlanta Motor Speedway, No. 17 seed Brad Keselowski in Round 2 at the Chicago Street Course, No. 8 seed Alex Bowman in Round 3 at Sonoma Raceway, No. 12 seed John Hunter Nemechek in Round 4 at Dover Motor Speedway and No. 6 seed Ty Gibbs in the Championship Round at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

DraftKings will make its debut with Kaulig Racing and the No. 10 Chevrolet for the Enjoy Illinois 300 at World Wide Technology Raceway on Sunday, September 7, live on USA at 3:00 p.m. ET. The race will be broadcast on the Motor Racing Network and SIRIUS XM’s NASCAR Channel.

NASCAR says it has no plans to limit driver celebrations in the aftermath of Xfinity driver Connor Zilisch’s fall in Victory Lane and subsequent broken collarbone.

Mike Forde, NASCAR managing director of communications, addressed the incident on the series’ “Hauler Talk” podcast released Wednesday, saying that some Victory Lane precautions would be put into place but that no new policies were being implemented.

Zilisch had recorded his series-leading sixth victory Saturday at Watkins Glen International when he climbed onto the roof of his No. 88 Chevrolet to celebrate. He slipped after apparently getting his left foot caught in the driver’s side window netting and tumbled awkwardly onto the asphalt.

The 19-year-old was taken to the hospital and diagnosed with a broken collarbone.

“Very grateful to be able to walk away from that, and I guess I didn’t walk away, but I’m very grateful to be walking today and to just be all right,” Zilisch said during the USA broadcast of the NASCAR Cup race Sunday.

Forde said NASCAR wouldn’t tell drivers not to climb on the door in Victory Lane.

“We have not put in any policies or best practices or anything like that,” Forde said.

At the same time, NASCAR will take some new precautions to avoid the specific circumstances that led to Zilisch’s fall.

“I think that was part of the problem that the window net was flapping on the outside,” Forde said. “I think Connor even said that may have been a problem, and one of our safety guys actually mentioned the same thing. So we may do just sort of a check to make sure that if that’s inside the car, it’s one less thing you can slip on.”

Zilisch underwent surgery Tuesday, and it is unclear whether he will recover in time for the Xfinity Series’ next race at Daytona International Speedway on Aug. 22. Zilisch missed a race earlier this season because of a back injury from a crash at Talladega Superspeedway, for which he received a waiver.

Forde did not say whether Zilisch would receive a waiver for the playoffs if he misses the Daytona race.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
