The NASCAR Cup Series heads back to EchoPark Speedway for the second time this season on Saturday night, as drivers begin to battle it out in the Quaker State 400, kicking off the first-ever In-Season Challenge.

The In-Season Challenge is very simple. Over the next five weeks, 32 NCS drivers will fight it out in single-elimination racing, where drivers go in individual head-to-head battles, with the driver who has the better finish advancing to the next round.

The winner of the event, which will be crowned in the return of the Brickyard 400 next month, will receive a $1 million prize.

Heading into the In-Season Championship, a shakeup in the regular season battle came ahead last Sunday when Chase Briscoe managed to keep enough gas in the tanke to outlast Denny Hamlin for his first win of the season, securing a spot in the playoffs. As it stands, 11 drivers have qualified for the postseason thanks to winning already this year.

During the NASCAR Truck race at Watkins Glen, Jack Wood suffered a major hit against the guardrail in the esses while driving his No. 91 Chevrolet.

He was evaluated and released from the infield care center, but in an announcement on Thursday, the team revealed that Wood will not be racing this weekend at Richmond Raceway.

Bill McAnally Racing stated that it was a “precautionary measure due to an injury sustained at Watkins Glen International. The No. 91 entry has been withdrawn from the event. An update on Wood’s status will be announced at a later date.”

With no replacement driver, the entry list is down to 36 trucks for Richmond, so there will be no DNQs. No other updates were provided regarding the kind of injury he suffered.

Wood is competing full-time in the Truck Series this year, scoring one top ten in 17 starts. He currently sits 19th in the championship standings. The 25-year-old has 78 career starts in the Truck Series, with his best finish coming at Rockingham earlier this year, where he finished seventh.

Katherine Legge Opens Up on Adapting to NASCAR and Chasing the Art of Driving Subconsciously

Katherine Legge admits adapting to NASCAR has been a challenge, but the Great Britain native is getting the hang of driving a stock car after her long history driving sports cars like in IMSA.

At 45 years old, Legge is one of the oldest drivers in the Cup Series this season and an unofficial rookie as well. She’s made six starts in the first 24 races and has had her struggles. Her best finishes have been 17th in the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis and 19th in the Chicago Street Race. As for her four other appearances, she has not finished higher than 30th.

If you think that’s bad, Legge has struggled even more in the Xfinity Series, which is supposed to help prepare a driver for eventually competing in the top tier. She’s made 11 career starts and has failed to finish seven of those times, including failing to finish five of her six Xfinity races this season (four times were due to crashes).

To her credit, however, in Legge’s six starts in the Cup Series this year for Live Fast Motorsports, she’s only failed to finish just once. “There’s been so many challenges,” Legge said on this week’s edition of the Stacking Pennies podcast with Corey LaJoie.

First of all, the car is very different to everything I’ve driven before. Everything I’ve driven before has a lot of downforce and just is different. This moves around a lot. Very heavy weight transfer. You don’t set the car up in a similar way. So, a lot of the stuff that I’ve learned in sports cars or any car doesn’t translate. It’s almost like a different sport.

“So there’s the actual driving aspect of it, but then there’s all the auxiliary stuff like even when you go to a track, I’ve never been to most of these tracks, like where is credentials, where do you drive out to pit lane? The choose, the first time I had to do the choose, I was like, ‘What now? What are we talking about here?’ And so it’s just a lot of new stuff.”

Legge’s mind cannot wander in a NASCAR race

The biggest difference and the hardest thing Legge has had to learn and adapt to is, how in NASCAR, your mind has to be racing at two or three times the speed you’re going in your race car. In other words, you have to constantly be thinking, anticipating, questioning and still find a way to make forward progress around other cars.

“The most challenging thing I guess that covers all of it across the board is having to consciously think live time about everything,” Legge said. “You get to the point where you’ve been doing it for so long, I was in sports cars. I could go to an IMSA race and I didn’t use my brain that much, right? I just turned up.

“I knew what to do in pit stops. I knew what the car needed. I knew what to tell my teammates. I knew when I looked at the data, I could brake a little bit later in Turn 4. (It was) easy. Do that the next time out. There wasn’t a lot of conscious thinking going on. My subconscious was just doing it all for me.

“(Driving a sports car is) smoother and it’s better because your subconscious mind can work so much more efficiently than your conscious mind can. Your conscious mind is like a step behind in my opinion. So, I’m trying to make it like program it so that it’s more and more subconscious and more comfortable.

“Like when I get in the car and I relax, I’m like, “Okay, I know what I’m doing now. I know how to do a start. I know how to look at the lights on the dash for pit lane. I know when to pull into pit lane. I know what the stage is. I know that we’re going to be doing a pit stop in the middle of the last stage.”

Short track racing? Under the lights? With the regular season winding down? NASCAR is in for an exciting weekend.

The Cup Series rolls into the Virginia capital of Richmond for the 25th race of the season on Saturday night.

Richmond Raceway has been a mainstay on the schedule since it’s first NASCAR event in 1953. The three-quarter-mile short track, with an old, worn-out surface, is typically a battle of tire management for the world’s best stock car drivers.

So, what’s in store for Richmond this year? What’s the TV schedule for the weekend? And who could contend for the win on Saturday? Here’s everything you need to know for the Cook Out 400:

When is the NASCAR race in Richmond?

The Cook Out 400 is set for Saturday, Aug. 16, at 7:35 p.m. ET.

Before the race, there will be practice and qualifying on Saturday. The 38 drivers will be split into two groups, with each group getting 25 minutes of free practice. For qualifying, each driver will get two laps to set the starting order based on speed.

NASCAR TV schedule this weekend for Richmond

Leigh Diffey (play-by-play), Jeff Burton (analyst) and Steve Letarte (analyst) will be on the call for NBC Sports, with Marty Snider, Dave Burns and and Kim Coon serving as pit reporters.

2025 Cook Out 400 entry list

Darrell “Bubba” Wallace is one of the most recognized names in NASCAR. Here’s what you need to know.

NASCAR Richmond picks, predictions, favorites

Denny Hamlin, a Virginia native, is the favorite nearly every time NASCAR visits his home track.

The Joe Gibbs Racing star has ruled in Richmond since entering the Cup Series in 2006. Even at 44 years old, there’s no slowing down for Hamlin. He leads all drivers with four wins this season, and his last eight Richmond starts include two wins, four runner-ups and seven top-fives with 663 laps led.

Hamlin doesn’t own the best average finish at Richmond, though — he’s third behind teammate Christopher Bell and former teammate Kyle Busch. Bell figures to be in the mix for his first Richmond win after leading 122 last summer. Busch desperately needs a win to make the playoffs, but he hasn’t been as strong at the track since moving to Richard Childress Racing in 2023 — though his teammate Austin Dillon won last year.

It’s not just the JGR Toyotas that will be quick this weekend, either. Hendrick Motorsports’ Chevrolets, plus Fords for Team Penske and RFK Racing, will have a say in the outcome.

Kyle Larson and Alex Bowman are past Richmond winners for Hendrick, and Joey Logano has done the same for Penske.

RFK Racing has three capable winners, who all need victories to make the playoffs. Brad Keselowski has two Richmond wins from his years with Penske, Chris Buescher won at Richmond in 2023 and Ryan Preece has a short track racing background. The team was quick at Iowa Speedway two weeks ago, a comparable track to Richmond.

The winning pick for Richmond is Keselowski, who arguably had the fastest car at Iowa and needs to put his organization into the playoffs.

NASCAR past winners, race history for Richmond

Eight of the 38 drivers in the field are past winners at Richmond.

Busch (6 wins) and Hamlin (5 wins) have dominated in Virginia throughout their Hall of Fame careers. Keselowski, Logano and Larson have two wins each, and the one-time winners include Bowman (2021), Buescher (2023) and Dillon (2024).

NASCAR pit stops are a sport themselves with how much planning goes into a perfect pit stop. Here’s what you need to know about what happens during a pit stop.

Allyson Castillo, a senior at UCF studying broadcast journalism in the Nicholson School of Communication and Media (NSCM), spent ten weeks this summer as an intern for NASCAR’s content team, where she’s working on influencer relations, trend analysis and digital storytelling that brings the energy of the race track to its audiences.

Castillo was only one of 40 students selected from more than 4,000 applicants for the NASCAR Next Internship Program. Interns from various academic backgrounds in the program are placed with teams and departments that stretch across the NASCAR industry, including 23XI Racing, Hendrick Motorsports, Daytona International Speedway and more.

“It absolutely means the world to me to be chosen out of 4,000 applicants,” she says. “It’s truly incredible to work alongside professionals and see the reality of what it’s like to actually be working in this exciting industry.”

Castillo’s role within the content team gives her insight into the digital side of motorsports, where she helps the brand connect with new and existing fans.

“My department specifically works with influencers, inviting them to a track to spread awareness and create content that shares the love of the sport,” she says. “It’s been a great experience connecting and working with these influencers.”

Having this internship opened new doors for Castillo and provided her with the opportunity to travel to Chicago and see her work come to life.

“Traveling to Chicago for the first time and having the chance to work alongside talented professionals and help grow the sport through influencer outreach is fulfilling to see,” she says. “It showed me how hard work pays off.”

Castillo says she’s always been a fan of motorsports, which encouraged her to apply when she made connections in the industry though UCF student organizations and opportunities such as the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) and NSCM’s Intern Pursuit.

“One of the people I met through networking opportunities on campus works in communications for NASCAR in Daytona,” Catillo says. “I connected with her to learn how to start in the industry. She was kind enough to share information about the NASCAR Next Internship Program.”

As a first-generation college student, Castillo says her goals have been shaped by the hard work and devotedness she grew up surrounded by.

“My parents were very young when they moved to the United States and seeing their dedication has always inspired me to earn a degree,” she said. “It’s so important to provide a space for communities to share their voice and be heard — and journalism has helped provide that pathway for me.”

Castillo says she credits networking events and UCF’s student organizations for this incredible opportunity.

“If I didn’t go to these networking events or if I wasn’t part of student organizations here at UCF, I wouldn’t have made those important connections or even know that this internship exists,” she says.

As an engaged journalism student, Castillo shares that she has earned priceless professional experience in many areas of media, including NPR’s Are We There Yet? podcast, reporting on UCF Athletics with ESPN+, partaking in Spanish spoken news broadcasts with NAHJ, and contributing to The Charge, UCF’s student-run news organization.

“The journalism program does a fantastic job in helping students connect with professionals,” she says. “Those opportunities really prepared me for the real world and taught me how to communicate effectively, meet deadlines, and thrive in a fast-paced environment.”
