Here’s a recent motorsports story via The Associated Press:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — A three-judge federal appellate panel ruled Thursday in favor of NASCAR in the antitrust lawsuit filed by two teams, one owned by Michael Jordan, and vacated an injunction that required 23XI and Front Row be recognized as chartered teams as their case snakes through the legal system.

Both race teams sued NASCAR late last year after refusing to sign new agreements on charter renewals. The charter system is similar to franchises in other sports, but the charters are revocable by NASCAR and have expiration dates. 23XI, which is owned by Jordan and three-time Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin, allied with Front Row in suing NASCAR after 13 other organizations signed the renewals last September and those two organization refused.

“We are disappointed by today’s ruling by the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals and are reviewing the decision to determine our next steps,” said Jeffery Kessler, attorney for 23XI and Front Row. “This ruling is based on a very narrow consideration of whether a release of claims in the charter agreements is anti-competitive and does not impact our chances of winning at trial scheduled for Dec. 1.

“We remain confident in our case and committed to racing for the entirety of this season as we continue our fight to create a fair and just economic system for stock car racing that is free of anticompetitive, monopolistic conduct.”

The two teams sued and asked for a temporary injunction that would recognize them as chartered teams for this season. The antitrust case isn’t scheduled to be heard until December.

The teams said they needed the injunction because the current charter agreement prohibits them from suing NASCAR. 23XI also argued it would be harmed because Tyler Reddick’s contract would have made him a free agent if the team could not guarantee him a charter-protected car.

The original judge ruled that NASCAR’s charter agreement likely violated antitrust law in granting the injunction. But when they heard arguments last month, the three judges at the the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in Richmond, Virginia, indicated they were skeptical of that decision.

The judges said in Thursday’s ruling they were not aware of any case that supports the lower court’s theory of antitrust law, so they vacated the injunction.

“In short, because we have found no support for the proposition that a business entity or person violates the antitrust laws by requiring a prospective participant to give a release for past conduct as a condition for doing business, we cannot conclude that the plaintiffs made a clear showing that they were likely to succeed on the merits of that theory,” the court said. “And without satisfaction of the likelihood-of-success element, the plaintiffs were not entitled to a preliminary injunction.”

The teams have 14 days to appeal to the full court. The injunction also has no bearings on the merits of the case, and the earliest NASCAR can treat the teams as unchartered — a charter guarantees their organizations a starting spot each week and prize money — is one week after the deadline to appeal, provided there is no pending appeal.

NASCAR has not said what it would do with the six charters held by the two organizations if they are returned to the sanctioning body. There are only 36 chartered cars for a 40-car field. If the teams do not appeal, the six entries would have to compete as “open” cars — which means they’d have to qualify on speed each week to make the race and they would receive a fraction of the money.

It’s not clear what would happen to Reddick’s contract. He goes to Michigan this weekend ranked sixth in the Cup Series standings. Both organizations are still seeking a win this season — Hamlin’s three victories are with Joe Gibbs Racing, the team he drives for.

Reddick is last year’s regular-season champion and competed for the Cup title last November.

T.J. Puchyr agrees to buy Rick Ware Racing with plans to build a 3-car NASCAR team

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — One of the founders of Spire Motorsports has entered an agreement to purchase the NASCAR team owned by Rick Ware and is jumping back into the stock car series because he believes the current charters are grossly undervalued.

T.J. Puchyr, who in 2018 alongside Jeff Dickerson launched the Spire team to take over the charter that Furniture Row Racing could not unload, told The Associated Press on Thursday he and Rick Ware Racing have a deal for him to take over Ware’s organization next season.

When Puchyr and Dickerson bought the Furniture Row charter, the market for NASCAR’s version of franchise models was essentially dead. Their agency had been hired by Furniture Row owner Barney Visser to sell the charter and when they couldn’t find a buyer, the two decided to purchase it themselves for $6 million and launch their own team.

That decision jump-started the charter market and the most recent charters sold — when Stewart-Haas Racing went out of business at the end of last season — went for approximately $30 million. Puchyr and Dickerson are largely credited with pumping life and value into an otherwise dormant charter system.

Puchyr last year sold his shares of Spire to Dan Towriss, the CEO of TWG Motorsports and head of the new Cadillac F1 team. Puchyr has spent 2025 consulting with various teams, including RWR and Legacy Motor Club. He’s watched the market closely and has attended several of the recent court hearings involving NASCAR against 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports, who have filed an antitrust lawsuit over the charter agreement those two teams refused to sign last September.

There are only 36 Cup Series charters, which guarantee a team entry into every NASCAR race and a steady revenue stream. Puchyr believes they are greatly undervalued and in one of his final deals with Spire, he helped acquire a charter from Live Fast Motorsports for $40 million.

“I am bullish on wanting to build a three-car team. I believe in the France family and the direction of the sport and I want the rest of the shareholders and industry to know that I believe the charters are worth $75 million or more,” he told AP.

What about Ware’s second charter?

In his deal with Ware, Puchyr will keep Ware on board as a partner, also keep Ware’s son, Cody, in the No. 51 Ford, and retain all of the current RWR employees. Ware’s current second charter is leased to RFK Racing, but Legacy Motor Club made a legal claim that it had entered an agreement to buy that charter next season.

A judge did not agree with Legacy, and said Ware has a lease deal with RFK for 2026 on a second charter. Puchyr believes none of the parties can perform to the Legacy-RWR contract — which he said was written by Legacy — and there is no charter available from Ware for Legacy for either lease or purchase in 2026. Ware has filed a countersuit against Legacy.

Legacy, a two-car Cup team, is currently owned by seven-time NASCAR champion and Hall of Famer Jimmie Johnson. He has recently taken on partnership from private equity firm Knighthead Capital Management, which alongside Johnson is exploring expansion into several other motorsports series.

“If anybody deserves a pass it is Jimmie and if he wants to sit down and talk about it like men, I’d entertain the conversation,” said Puchyr, who was offended that Legacy sued Ware.

“I don’t think Jimmie has all the facts, doesn’t understand the deal we had, and they tried to humiliate Rick publicly. We don’t do business that way.”

Now, Puchyr and Ware are confident the second charter currently leased to RFK will be returned to their team in 2027, allowing Puchyr to expand the organization. He wants to buy a third charter that makes the organization a three-car Cup team by 2027.

Can Puchyr build a winning team?

Ware has done the second-most charter transactions in the industry only to Spire and at one point held four. Now he’s trying to rebuild his organization and win races with his son as the driver, something Puchyr wants to help him achieve.

“I’ve won at everything I’ve done at every level and I think we can compete with these guys,” Puchyr said. “I think we can build it brick-by-brick and it’s going to take people, money and time. It’s not lost on me that (RWR) is the 36th-place car in the garage, we all see it. But I believe we can make this a competitive organization, even a winner.

“And I believe we can get these charters valued at their true worth.”

Ware fields winning organizations in other motorsports series, including NHRA with Clay Millican. A Ware-owned team won the 2024 American Flat Track championship, the 2022 FIM World Supercross Championship and the 2019-2020 Asian Le Mans Series prototype title.

Puchyr did not reveal to the AP how much he’s paying for Ware’s organization, which technically only holds the charter for Cody Ware’s car this season and runs Corey Lajoie in a second “open” car in select races. Once it gets its leased charter back from RFK in 2027, the team will have at least two cars with the focus on purchasing a third.

Purchasing charters is not easy at this time as multiple teams have interest but lack the monetary funds to buy them at the ever-increasing rates. Among them is Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr., who has not been able to get his hands on charters to take his Xfinity Series team to NASCAR’s top Cup Series level.

Chicago closes streets early to fix buckling pavement before race

The NASCAR Chicago Street Race is still more than a week away, but Mother Nature is already burning up the track.

The heat dome that descended on Chicago last weekend with unrelenting 100-degree temperatures caused buckling pavement on a stretch of the pop-up race course, forcing the city to close some streets ahead of schedule to repair the damage.

On Wednesday evening, the city shut down Balbo Drive from Columbus Drive to Michigan Avenue, which was originally scheduled to close Friday. It also closed Columbus from Jackson Drive to Roosevelt Road — five days ahead of schedule — to allow work crews to repair the pavement buckle.

The rest of the course is “holding up fine” and the street closings ahead of the July Fourth weekend race event will remain on schedule, a NASCAR spokesperson said Thursday.

Chicago is not alone in navigating this summer’s new road hazard. The oppressive heat and humidity, which have brought triple-digit temperatures across the Midwest and East Coast in recent weeks, have caused the pavement to buckle on roads in a number of states. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation, for example, reported 50 pavement buckles on highways across the state last weekend.

Likewise, the Illinois Department of Transportation posted an online warning Monday to “be on the lookout for pavement failures” on roads through the state because of the prolonged high temperatures.

Meanwhile, a video of a car going airborne in an Evel Knievel-style jump over a heat-induced pavement buckle in Missouri went viral this week. That is certainly something NASCAR wants to avoid when its 200-mph race cars hit Chicago streets next week.

Chicago is set to host the third annual street race July 5-6 on a 12-turn, 2.2-mile course through Grant Park, down DuSable Lake Shore Drive and up Michigan Avenue.

This year, NASCAR has streamlined the buildout and reduced major street closings to 18 days, starting with the shutdown last week of Balbo from Columbus to DuSable Lake Shore Drive. All streets are scheduled to be reopened by July 14.

Tomy Drissi Back in Trans Am Action at Road America

·       Tomy Drissi heads to Road America third in the Trans Am championship after a top five finish at Mid-Ohio

·       In recent years, Drissi has built a two-race top five streak at Road America, as well as taking the pole in 2021 and the fastest race lap in 2020

·       Other achievements for Drissi at Road America include two NASCAR Xfinity Series starts and Drissi Motorsports’ first race as a three-car team last year

2009 Trans Am champion Tomy Drissi and Drissi Motorsports are set to take on the second of back-to-back Trans Am by Pirelli race weekends at Road America. Drissi and the #8 Trench Shoring Company/Motul/Franklin Road Apparel Chevrolet Camaro team remain a solid third in the championship, with hopes of returning to the podium at one of America’s most iconic racing venues on Saturday.

Drissi’s experience at Road America dates to his rookie Trans Am season in 1999, when he finished ninth. He has scored multiple top five finishes in his Trans Am career at the famed Wisconsin circuit, including two in a row the past two seasons, as well as the pole in 2021 and the fastest lap the year prior. Last year’s Road America race also marked a milestone for Drissi Motorsports, as the team fielded three cars in a Trans Am race for the first time. Alongside his Trans Am experience at the track, Drissi also made two starts here in the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2015 and 2016.

After gaining points on second place in the Trans Am standings last weekend at Mid-Ohio, Drissi will look to cut the gap further with a strong run at Road America. He spent most of the Mid-Ohio race in a podium position, turning fast laps on pace with the leaders. With two podiums and top five finishes in all but one race so far this season, Drissi aims to convert his speed and consistency into a season-best performance this weekend.

“We’re ready to get back after it this weekend at Road America,” said Drissi. “We had better pace at Mid-Ohio than the results showed, and we’re glad to be able to get right back to racing this weekend to show that off. Our consistency has kept us towards the top of the standings so far, and we typically get faster as the season continues, so we have high hopes to get back on the box this weekend.”

Trans Am action for Tomy Drissi and Drissi Motorsports from Road America kicks off with a pair of optional test sessions at noon and 3:40PM on Thursday. On Friday, practice will run at 10:55AM and TA drivers will qualify at 3:50PM. Saturday’s race will kick off at 12:35PM and run for 25 laps or 75 minutes, with the usual live streaming available on Trans Am social media channels and SPEED SPORT 1.

To keep up with Tomy Drissi, follow @tomydrissi on Instagram and Facebook, and visit www.tomydrissi.com. Following Road America, Drissi Motorsports returns to action on July 11-13 at Watkins Glen International.

ExxonMobil’s $467 billion empire is turbocharging NASCAR’s broadcast revolution. Its Mobil 1 brand will sponsor exclusive segments during The CW’s Xfinity Series coverage starting July 5 at the Chicago Street Race.

The multi-race integration marks NASCAR’s most ambitious content partnership since The CW Network secured broadcast rights this year. Mobil 1’s deep pockets signal corporate confidence in the series’ surging viewership as the network reshapes racing entertainment.

Mobil 1 Claims Victory Lane in CW Network’s Xfinity Series Makeover

Five races will feature “Mobil 1 Victory Lane” post-win driver interviews, injecting the lubricant brand into NASCAR’s most iconic celebration. Additional branded elements include:

  • Pre-race “Keys to Mobil 1 Victory Lane” strategy segments
  • “Mobil 1 Victory Lane Leaderboard Updates” after Stages 1 and 2
  • “Mobil 1 Winning Moment” race-defining replay highlights
  • “Mobil 1 Victory Lane Interview & Celebration” with the winning driver

The Chicago launch on July 5, 2025, kicks off a strategic schedule that continues at:

  • Watkins Glen – August 9,
  • Daytona – August 22,
  • Talladega – October 18,
  • Phoenix’s season finale – November 1

ExxonMobil’s North America Marketing Manager, Austin Johansen, framed the move as fan-centric and said, “Our goal is to provide fans with new ways to experience the sport we love, bringing them closer to the action.”

NASCAR’s Chief Partnership Officer, Michelle Byron, emphasized legacy alignment, saying, “Mobil 1 Victory Lane has become a signature celebration in our sport, and we’re thrilled that our partners are committed to showcasing this iconic experience during the NASCAR Xfinity Series on The CW.”

The CW’s Dan Lanzano noted, “This initiative is the result of continued collaboration and innovation between The CW, Mobil 1, and NASCAR Productions teams to enhance the Xfinity Series viewing experience for race fans around the country,” highlighting how brands now weave directly into NASCAR’s storytelling fabric.

But this isn’t a superficial sponsorship. Technical insights from Mobil 1 engineers will feature in pre-race segments, leveraging the brand’s two decades of NASCAR technical partnership. The deal exemplifies how blue-chip advertisers now demand deeper integration beyond logo slaps.

CW’s NASCAR Bet Ignites Audience Surge

The Mobil 1 deal reinforces The CW’s successful gamble on NASCAR. The Xfinity race at Pocono shattered all previous records, peaking at 1,575,000. Seventeen consecutive races surpassed 1 million viewers, marking the series’ strongest start since 2016.

Network executives credit authentic brand integrations for boosting engagement. The live pre-race show, “NASCAR COUNTDOWN LIVE,” has become a launchpad for organic sponsor activations, featuring drivers and broadcast talent in unscripted moments.

Demographics reveal the real win. The CW’s younger-skewing audience aligns perfectly with NASCAR’s growth strategy. As Johansen stated, the partnership celebrates “the energy that makes NASCAR so memorable” while attracting elusive Gen Z viewers.

Atlanta’s EchoPark Speedway race will test the model’s momentum. With 17 brands activating during February’s Daytona opener, The CW proves NASCAR’s second-tier series drives premium advertiser value.

Chicago’s street course now becomes Mobil 1’s laboratory. Expect camera angles focused on sponsored signage during winner burnouts and tech-focused commentary during critical passes.

Porsche Motorsport North America’s Selected Drivers series continues its global push this weekend as Laurens Hartog and Tom Sargent prepare to compete in the 24 Hours of Spa. Both drivers will pilot Porsche 911 GT3 R entries at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, with the race scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. EDT on Saturday, June 28.

Hartog arrives fresh from a podium finish at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, while Sargent is making his Spa debut after racing at the Six Hours of Watkins Glen earlier this month. Hartog has twice won endurance events at Spa, including the Porsche 992 Endurance Cup 12-Hour and a 24-Hour Series race. Sargent earned a Porsche Carrera Cup North America championship runner-up spot in 2023 and captured a GT World Challenge victory with GMG Racing in 2024.

Both drivers were named to the PMNA Selected Drivers roster alongside Riley Dickinson in recognition of their success in Carrera Cup North America. Hartog is the defending series champion, and Sargent finished directly behind Dickinson in 2023. The Selected Drivers program provides manufacturer support, expanded race opportunities and mentorship across GT and endurance platforms.

Volker Holzmeyer, president and CEO of Porsche Motorsport North America, praised the group’s international impact and wished them luck at what is billed as the world’s largest GT3-only event. In addition to Hartog’s Dinamic GT entry and Sargent’s Wright Motorsports lineup, a total of 75 GT3 cars from 10 manufacturers will contest the race across five driver-ranking classes.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. trolls Hendrick Motorsports after NASCAR levied suspension

Feeling fresh off his first win as a crew chief in his first race on the box, Dale Earnhardt Jr. trolled his Hendrick Motorsports friends. Dale Jr. helped lead Connor Zilisch to the win at Pocono. It was the young NASCAR driver’s first win at an “oval” track.

There was a bit of criticism, or more dismissal, over Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his first race as a crew chief. A few people were talking about “war rooms” and how connected the crew chiefs are to the tracks, even when they are suspended.

No matter the outside noise, Dale Jr. appears to want to do it again. Chase Elliott’s No. 17 car was taken back to the Research and Development Center for a teardown. Well, the Hendrick Xfinity Series team got caught with a “main frame rail conical receiver violation.”

Adam Wall was the crew chief, and he’s suspended for three races. So, Dale Earnhardt Jr. says he’s going to hit up Greg Ives and see if he can fill in for the 17 team.

Ives has been at Hendrick Motorsports for years, from mechanic to crew chief. In the Cup Series, he’s worked with Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Alex Bowman. He recently worked as the crew chief for JR Motorsports and Justin Allgaier in the Daytona 500.

Could Dale Jr. convince his former crew chief to let him work on the 17 car? I’m not so sure. Ives is helping develop Corey Day in the Xfinity Series in that car. Maybe they need a guy to catch tires on pit stops. Earnhardt proved he can do both at Pocono.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. was thrilled to win as crew chief

With Mardy Lindley watching at home and helping as much as he could, Dale Earnhardt Jr. had a great debut as crew chief. He also had his buddy Steve Letarte up there with him. So, Connor Zilisch was in good hands.

I mean, there were many chances that Earnhardt could have ruined things. He was on the pit box; he ultimately had the final say on things. If he made one decision for whatever reason against Lindley or Letarte’s advice, it could have cost them the race. Heck, he was grabbing tires! So, he could have easily caused a pit road penalty.

Besides, it was great to see him after the race. That win meant a lot to Dale Jr. However it got done, it got done.

“Yeah, it sure was [fun],” Earnhardt said on The CW broadcast after the win. “When we have an issue like this with somebody being suspended, and uh, Mardy and everybody, they know what to do. Just a great job, putting us in a position to succeed. And we had a lot of things go our way.

“A lot of good luck. Great strategy. Had a little help from Letarte up here. I wasn’t not gonna have Steve Letarte not get on this pit box after the races we won together in 2014. So, he was a big help. But Pat, everybody on this team, just amazing all weekend long. And what a great race car driver. Connor Zilisch is going to be a big deal in this sport for a long time. So, a lot of fun for me today!”
