Who will win Rookie of the Year in '25? We polled baseball execs

Last year wasn’t quite as successful as a majority of those polled picked Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the National League and Evan Carter won the vote in the American League. To their credit, Paul Skenes, the actual 2024 winner, and third-place finisher Jackson Chourio did get votes. Over in the American League, Wyatt Langford received votes in the poll and the eventual voting, even if he finished a distant seventh to winner Luis Gil.
Just how good are executives across Major League Baseball at predicting the future? That’s what we aim to find out in our annual MLB Pipeline Poll. Two years ago, they were on the money, choosing Corbin Carroll and Gunnar Henderson to win Rookie of the Year honors in 2023.
Will Roki Sasaki be the favorite to win Rookie of the Year in 2025 regardless of who signs him?
Lawlar missed most of the 2024 season, but did post an OPS of .899 in the Minors over 23 games. Still just 22, he needs to stay healthy and given a long-term opportunity to show what he can do in Arizona.
Those who singled out Chandler were likely looking at what Paul Skenes did last year. Even if Chandler starts the year in Triple-A (like Skenes did), he should pitch his way into enough meaningful innings to warrant conversation. The Pirates trading away Luis L. Ortiz in the Spencer Horwitz deal could have opened the door even more.
Campbell was MLB Pipeline’s hitting and breakout prospect of the year and finished with a .997 OPS. He might have a clearer path to the big league lineup because the Red Sox need a second baseman and right-handed hitting.
Yes: 79.2 pct
No: 20.8 pct
Who is going to win the rookie hardware in 2025? There is no clear-cut favorite in the American League, but there appears to be one in the NL, though the expected signing of Japanese phenom Roki Sasaki should vault him to the top of the frontrunners list in whichever league he lands.
Jobe, who tied Anthony for the most votes, got his feet wet late last year and then got thrown into the very hot postseason fire. He’s ready for a shot at the Tigers’ rotation. If Domínguez hadn’t gotten hurt, he probably wouldn’t be in this conversation anymore at this point. Mayo doesn’t have a clear path to a spot in the O’s lineup, but his power potential should be unleashed in the AL East full-time soon. Wilson also would have graduated if he hadn’t gotten hurt, but he should be given every opportunity to be the A’s regular shortstop in 2025.
We asked front office officials, from general managers to members of scouting, player development and analytics departments, a vast array of questions in this year’s survey. We received responses from all 30 organizations in the hopes of providing as large a cross-section of opinion as possible. Answers on many topics will be discussed in a week-long series, starting with their collective take on who will be the 2025 Rookie of the Year winners.
The main issue, of course, is we don’t know yet which league he’ll call home, and we’ll have more on that as the series continues. For now, the one conclusion is that wherever he goes, he’ll immediately be installed as a favorite to win some hardware for his rookie season.
Four of the players on the “leaderboard” have gotten some big league experience, with the expectation that they’re going to stick — assuming health — in 2025. The two newcomers are the two members of the Red Sox organization on the list. Both Roman Anthony and Kristian Campbell made it to Triple-A last year and are very much knocking on the door. The Red Sox outfield is pretty full at present, but there clearly is some sentiment that the organization will make room for Anthony’s bat after he finished the 2024 season with a combined .894 OPS at age 20.
Dylan Crews, OF, Nationals, 50 pct
Matt Shaw, 3B, Cubs, 18.8 pct
Bubba Chandler, RHP, Pirates, 10.4 pct
Jordan Lawlar, SS, D-backs, 6.3 pct
Also received votes: Dalton Rushing, C/OF, Dodgers; Thomas Saggese, INF, Cardinals
Roman Anthony, OF, Red Sox, 19.1 pct
Jackson Jobe, RHP, Tigers, 19.1 pct
Jasson Domínguez, OF, Yankees, 17 pct
Coby Mayo, 3B/1B, Orioles, 14.9 pct
Kristian Campbell, 2B/OF/SS, Red Sox, 8.5 pct
Jacob Wilson, SS, A’s, 8.5 pct
Also received votes: Jac Caglianone, 1B, Royals; Nick Kurtz, 1B, A’s; Kumar Rocker, RHP, Rangers; Kyle Teel, C, White Sox
When the Cubs traded Isaac Paredes to the Astros, it made it seem much more likely that Shaw will get the chance to start at the hot corner in Chicago. The 2023 first-round pick made it to Triple-A in 2024, finishing with 21 homers and 31 steals, before starring for Team USA in the Premier12 Tournament.
Part 1: Rookies of the Year
Part 2: Prospects
Part 3: Tools
Part 4: Farm Systems
This vote left little question: Among those currently eligible for the award (more on that below), Crews is the clear favorite to win the award in the National League in 2025. He had a solid 2024 season in the Minors and got his feet wet over 31 games in the big leagues. He should be the Nats’ right fielder on Opening Day.
For those of you reading and wondering throughout, “What about Roki Sasaki???” here you go. The Japanese phenom is obviously a game-changer is so many ways and where the right-hander signs is one of the big storylines of this offseason. I actually posed this question first among the set about Rookie of the Year to separate him out, guessing (correctly) that Sasaki would likely be the choice for ROY for most surveyed.

Joe Rogan pleaded with UFC Atlanta star to retire following three brutal KO losses in a row

Cody Garbrandt was once regarded as one of the future stars of the UFC when he captured bantamweight gold in 2016.

When Cody Garbrandt clashed against one of the all-time bantamweight greats in Dominick Cruz in 2016, nobody expected him to go on and produce one of the greatest title performances in the promotion’s history.

This coming Saturday at UFC Atlanta, the former UFC bantamweight champion returns to action when he takes on veteran Brazilian, Raoni Barcelos.

‘No Love’s’ last outing came at UFC 300 when he took on former UFC flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo, unfortunately losing via a second round submission.

Cody Garbrandt suffered horrendous downfall after all-time performance

Despite Garbrandt’s impressive rise up the bantamweight ranks and subsequent title win early in his career, things rapidly went downhill for the hard-hitting star.

A year after dethroning ‘The Dominator’, Garbrandt was scheduled to defend his title against his longtime rival, TJ Dillashaw.

Garbrandt and Dillashaw had a huge rivalry because Dillashaw used to be a training partner of Garbrandt’s before leaving the gym and joining a new team.

In their clash at UFC 217, Garbrandt knocked Dillashaw down in the final seconds of round one which saved the challenger from being finished. And then in round two, Dillashaw came out and scored a knockout win.

The two rematched just under a year later at UFC 227 and Dillashaw once again scored an impressive knockout, handing Garbrandt back-to-back losses for the first time in his career.

Unfortunately, though, things went from bad to worse for ‘No Love’ who attempted to climb back up the bantamweight ladder but was handed his third knockout loss in a row when he fought Pedro Munhoz at UFC 235.

Joe Rogan pleaded with Garbrandt to retire after three brutal KO losses

At one point, Garbrandt was labeled as ‘the UFC’s next star’ by UFC boss, Dana White, but after three brutal losses in a row, fans called for the star to retire before things got worse.

UFC icon, Joe Rogan also claimed that he hoped ‘No Love’ would retire after suffering his loss to Munhoz.

“Tough road for Cody,” Rogan said before Garbrandt’s fight against Trevin Jones in 2023.

“Another guy who was the elite of the elite at one point in time. Someone knocked him out very early on in his career, real bad… With Cody Garbrandt after all those KO losses, you’ve got to wonder, how many more does he have left?

“When a guy gets KO’d a gang of times, like, there’s a lot of people that it gets to a certain point in time and you’re like, ‘Someone needs to step in and stop this from happening.’” Rogan continued.

Garbrandt rebounded from three brutal KOs with an incredible win over Raphael Assuncao, but was then dealt two more brutal losses against Rob Font and Kai Kara-France.

Netflix has had a slew of successes translating the world of sports into compelling series with emotional storylines. Check out the very best titles across a wide range of professional leagues and competitions below.

This 40-minute documentary is a high-stakes snackable dose of sports drama that picks up in the wake of Lewis Hamilton’s shocking departure from the Mercedes F1 team after twelve years and six world champions, and follows 18-year-old Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s promotion to the most prestigious racing league in the world.

It’s a great supplement to Netflix’s Formula 1: Drive to Survive series which exploded the league’s popularity, and proved that the elite racing community could deliver as much drama as the Real Housewives. An excuse to see Mercedes Team Principal and F1 zaddy Toto Wolff in his crisp white button down is reason enough to queue this title up.

The riveting story of one woman’s journey to overcome gender stereotypes in rural Nepal and follow her dreams of becoming a professional mountaineer, achieving historic success summiting Mount Everest ten times, the current record for female climbers.

Spanning Sherpa’s life from childhood to motherhood, an abusive marriage, and her immigration to the United States, we see her perseverance and determination impact her life on and off the mountain. Thoughtful attention is paid to her Nepalese roots and the Sherpa culture, and her effort to impart both to two daughters as they grow up in Connecticut.

Following the massive success of Formula 1: Drive To Survive, Netflix took a stab at humanizing the world of professional golf. By following major names like Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler and others on and off the course, the series was able to generate compelling suspenseful storylines around a sport without the fights, fouls, or impact of the NHL, NBA, or NFL.

The series explores player friendships and rivalries, the expanding diversity of the league, and the growing tension between the PGA-Tour and Saudi-funded LIV Golf league to provide a modern, nuanced, and evocative view on one of the world’s oldest modern sports.

A household name that simultaneous represents an international soccer career, a high-profile marriage, fashion icons, and pop culture sensations, this documentary literally has something for everyone familiar with the family whether you’re a sports fan or not.

The journey through Beckham’s career from childhood to present day was especially riveting for an American viewer like me who grew up in during his rise to fame and didn’t have previous knowledge of highs and lows, wins and losses. The game clips and interviews with Victoria Beckham and Sir Alex Ferguson felt like experiencing 30 years of sports and pop culture suspense at once.

The Drive To Survive team strikes once again with another behind the scenes series, this time focused on the world of international tennis. Featuring participation from ATP and WTA pros like Nick Kyrgios, Frances Tiafoe, Alexander Zverev, Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Świątek, and Coco Gauff, the series not only exhibited balanced coverage of men’s and women’s sports, but the physical and mental tolls of training.

Like it’s sister F1 and PGA series, Break Point focuses on the interpersonal relationships between pros, career highs and lows, as well as the immense pressure fame and media attention bring to competing at such an elite level.

The epic 10-part series covering the Chicago Bull’s 1997-98 NBA season as they pursued their sixth championship during Michael Jordan’s final season with the team, brought together over 500 hours of unseen footage, along with in-depth interviews with players, coaches, and other commentators.

The film also covers Jordan’s journey to super-stardom, along with his first retirement after his father’s murder, and pivot to pursue a career in baseball. As with the Beckham documentary, it provided an incredible opportunity for younger sports fans to relive the magic of not just an epic career, but an entire era of basketball.

Sixers draft profile: VJ Edgecombe is a big-time athlete who loves to defend

A scouting report on NBA draft prospect VJ Edgecombe:

  • Position: Guard
  • Height: 6-foot-4 (without shoes)
  • Weight: 193 pounds
  • College: Baylor

Strengths

Edgecombe has the sort of athleticism that makes you stop whatever you were doing and watch replays in amazement.

While he’s still learning how to harness it all, he’s currently got a nice feel for how to both shine in obvious ways (rapid bursts to the rim, highlight slams) and subtle ways (snagging rebounds in a pack, recovering after falling a step behind defensively). The 19-year-old had a productive all-around freshman season at Baylor, posting 15.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.1 steals and 0.6 blocks per game.

Edgecombe enjoys and takes pride in his defense. He doesn’t have the size of a guard-everyone stopper or the wingspan (6-foot-7.5) of a player destined to rack up steals and blocks, but his effort and explosiveness are great foundational traits.

“I feel like I’m an elite defender, but I also have a ways to go,” Edgecombe told reporters at the NBA draft combine. “I’m just willing to play defense with all my heart. I know if there’s anything I can do on the floor to impact the game, it’s guarding. That’s something I’m ready to do for sure.”

Edgecombe was a good college rebounder, ranking in the Big 12’s top 20 in rebounds per game. Rebounding is not one of his core tools, but it might lead Edgecombe’s NBA team to be a bit more comfortable using guard-heavy lineups.

Last summer, Edgecombe played with the Bahamas in the FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament and showed his game already could be quite impactful against grown men. With NBA veteran teammates Deandre Ayton, Buddy Hield and Eric Gordon, he was one of his country’s key players. Edgecombe averaged 16.5 points on 57.1/38.5/81.3 shooting splits, 5.5 rebounds and 3.8 assists.

Weaknesses

Edgecombe’s far from a polished ball handler and isolation scorer. He doesn’t have the tight, advanced handle to suggest he’s on the verge of consistently, efficiently creating his own shots in the NBA.

He also won’t enter the league as a crafty, comfortable finisher in traffic. When faced with resistance inside, he sometimes seemed to lack a real counter, flinging the ball toward the rim or trying to power through bigger bodies.

Edgecombe’s shot is not a strength at the moment. The numbers weren’t bad in college; 34 percent from three-point range on 4.6 attempts per game, 78.2 percent at the foul line. That said, Edgecombe has a rather narrow base on his jumper, isn’t smooth off the dribble and generally doesn’t look the part of a pure shooter.

No apparent need for deep concern there, especially given Edgecombe’s willingness to let it fly, but shooting improvement would certainly enhance his odds of becoming an NBA star.

Fit

Notably, Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey’s general philosophy is to take the best player available.

If the Sixers drafted Edgecombe with the third overall pick, he’d add to the team’s list of guards 6-foot-4 and under, which includes Tyrese Maxey and Jared McCain. Morey has said he intends to bring back restricted free agent Quentin Grimes, too.

The idea of Edgecombe as a Sixer would sound better if he proves capable of defending wings well at times and grows as a shooter. His size alone doesn’t appear like it should be a disqualifying factor.

Tom Aspinall claims Jon Jones has reached his 'time limit' amid intense pressure to strip UFC GOAT

Tom Aspinall is confident about his fighting future, despite the uncertainty surrounding Jon Jones.

Talks for a massive UFC heavyweight unification fight have been ongoing since November 2024.

Last week, Jon Jones publicly claimed he’s got no interest in facing his division’s interim titleholder amid rumors about his impending retirement from MMA.

A subsequent call out of Francis Ngannou fell flat as UFC CEO Dana White shut down the crossover bout and insisted that Tom Aspinall is the man to beat at heavyweight during his UFC 316 post-fight press conference.

Tom Aspinall is glad to be done with Jon Jones saga

Tom Aspinall recently teamed up with lightweight contender Paddy Pimblett for a training session.

Naturally, ‘The Baddy’ probed his English compatriot for information on the Jon Jones situation.

Aspinall’s response suggested that the UFC are ready to give up on the biggest fight of 2025.

“Everybody has got a time limit, and he’s reached it. Now we’re moving on,” he said.

“It’s all in the past now. We’re moving forward, everything’s good, and we can get fighting again.

“It’s better now because I do know what’s going on a bit and I am gonna fight soon, so that’s nice.

“But for the last six months, I’ve just kind of not known what is going on.

“Money, fame, titles, rankings, all that aside, I just love fighting. I just like fighting people, that’s what I got into it for. I didn’t get into it really for anything else. All of the other stuff is just nice to have on top.

“I just want to fight and that’s been taken away from me for over a year now.

“But we’re nearly over it now, which is good.”

Dana White reacts to petition to strip Jon Jones

Over 190,000 people have signed a petition calling for the UFC to strip Jon Jones of his belt.

Dana White dismissed it as ‘silly’ when probed by assembled media following UFC 316 on Saturday.

“Yeah,” the UFC CEO said when asked if he’d seen the viral petition.

“Every human on Earth was DM’ing it to me.

“How many fans are there worldwide now, what’s the number?

“Like 400 million and 130,000 people want to see him stripped.

“It’s kind of f—— silly.”

Those don’t seem like the comments of a man who is planning to strip Jones anytime soon.

Still, Aspinall seems to think there will be an imminent resolution that will work in his favor.
