Kyle Busch will return to Richard Childress Racing for the 2026 season.

From the outside looking in, some might wonder why a two-time Cup champion with 63 career victories riding a 69-race winless streak would return to a team for another year, that both sides might figure it’s not working.

But Richard Childress and Kyle Busch have a mix of determination and stubbornness that make them believe they can continue to work together. Add that Busch — who turned 40 earlier this month — doesn’t want to stop racing and another year at RCR isn’t a bad gig.

The announcement Saturday confirmed RCR has picked up Busch’s option — it isn’t totally clear who had control of the option but forcing Busch to stay if he wanted to leave likely wouldn’t work out well for RCR — and any significant talks for 2027 and beyond are still yet to happen.

Busch wants to keep racing and eventually race trucks with his son, Brexton, who is 10 (potentially they would split a season when Brexton is 16 and can only do short tracks and road courses).

“There’s kind of the vision or the plan, if you will, on being able to race in some truck races with Brexton alongside,” Busch said. “So obviously, that’s six years from now before he can make that start.

“So that would sort of be an idea of when I would look at stepping aside from Cup Series racing, but it’s a long ways out.”

Those inside RCR say that Busch remains engaged in working with the team to improve. He also might have more options after the 2026 season when more big rides could become available.

William Byron signed a contract extension through 2029, making all four Hendrick drivers signed through at least next year. Joe Gibbs Racing likely will extend its deal with Denny Hamlin for at least a couple more years. If Trackhouse makes any moves, it has Connor Zilisch waiting in the wings; if 23XI does, it has Corey Heim ready to take over a car. All of Spire’s drivers are under contract for next season.

Those are all Chevrolet teams and while RFK Racing shouldn’t be ruled out as a possibility for Busch in the future, that organization could be in limbo for its third car depending on the Legacy-Rick Ware Racing litigation over a RWR charter sale to Legacy that was supposed to occur after 2026 (not to mention Ryan Preece hasn’t done anything to lose that ride). Busch driving for Team Penske, which also could very well have the same stable next year, doesn’t appear likely.

Several of those teams could have more openings after 2026, and if a new manufacturer wants to race NASCAR, those plans might be more clear in another year.

There’s another benefit of staying with RCR and in the Chevrolet camp for Busch — if he did want an opportunity to race in the Indy 500, it is the one manufacturer that competes in both series. Kyle Larson is in the second year of a two-year deal with Arrow McLaren to compete in the event and hasn’t been committal to additional years.

Busch said he had been talking to INDYCAR teams when the Larson deal got done, which didn’t leave another ride with an engine package available.

“I wouldn’t say I’ve given up on, but the phone hasn’t been ringing,” Busch said. “I think Larson got the seat I was supposed to get for the last two years now. So whether that seat is open for next year, I’m not sure.

“I haven’t really ventured into that, but those conversations pretty much take place July, August of each year, and then try to get done before December.”

RCR’s announcement included confirmation the organization plans to remain a two-car Cup team with Childress grandson Austin Dillon as Busch’s teammate.

HARLAN – On a beautiful evening for Farmers Appreciation Night at Shelby County Speedway on Saturday, June 14, racing action was fantastic once again.

The night was Sponsored by Arbor Bank from Oakland along with Nutrien AG Solutions of Hancock and Patriots Choice Contracting of Harlan. These sponsors provided Free gate admission a huge turnout enjoyed the evening. Eighty-seven cars checked in the five classes. Fathers day give aways at intermission were provided by Hi-Banks Promotions, Fareway, Shelby County Golf Course and your local NAPA Auto Parts of Harlan.

Racing got underway with the KNOD IMCA Hobby Stocks. Heat winners were Jeff Fink and Jason Goans. In the feature Dayton Ullrich passed Joel Magee in an exciting finish that was very close. Jeff Fink finished in third place, Zach Hemmingsen was fourth, and Colby Christensen came from the 13th starting spot to finish fifth. Great action in the Hobby Stocks again.

Twenty-one Atlantic Bottling Coca-Cola IMCA Sport Compacts were on hand. Heat winners were Tanner Hoffman, Caine Mahlberg and Jim Cahill. Feature action once again saw Caine Mahlberg came from the 10th position to pick up the win. Hoffman was second, John Logan third, Levi Volkert fourth and point leader Zach Day finished fifth.

In the Keast Motors IMCA Sport Mod class twenty-two entries provided awesome racing action. Three heats were had. And those heats were won by Kevin Wortman, Dylan Petersen and Chase Monson. In Feature action Chase Monson grabbed the early lead and looked like the man to beat. But a caution was thrown and bunched up the field. When the green came back out Monson was unable to hold the top spot. In a great battle, Cody Olsen found his way to the front and picked up the victory. Corey Madden got to second but could get no closer. Hayden Hillgartner captured third, followed by Monson in fourth and Dylan Petersen in fifth.

Next up were the Murphy Equipment IMCA Stock Cars. Taking heat races were Mike Albertsen and Mike Hansen. In the Feature racing action Mike Hansen had a great run as he held the lead battling with Dustin Reeh, Larry Robinson Jr. But coming from the rear of the field waiting for the cars to sort out. On lap 7, Albertsen started making his move to the front and picked up the win. Albertsen was followed by Dustin Reeh, Robinson Jr. , Mike Hansen and Riley Christensen rounded out the top 5. Stock Cars always entertain.

In the final class tonight the Sorensen Equipment IMCA Late Models. Heat races were won by Aiden Mohr, Drew Baker and Brett Hopp. Feature action saw Drew Baker and Cooper Tilley battle it out early. But Drew started pulling away using the high side of the track. Able to withstand several restarts Baker did a masterful job of driving picking up the win. Picking up second was Kale Kosiski, third to Zach Zeitner, fourth Jesse Sobbing and fifth was taken by Brett Hopp. Another great race in this Premier class at SCS.

Be with us next week for MAHLE night at SCS. We expect a big crowd and a lot of great racing action as always with these same classes as well as Joe’s Carting Mini Mods and Western Iowa Vintage. Hot laps 6:30 p.m. with racing to follow.

Josh Berry and the No. 21 DEX Imaging team had an up-and-down day in the Viva Mexico 250 at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez and came away with a 26th-place finish.

Berry started the 100-lap race over the 2.429-mile, 15-turn course from 13th place. The race was less than a lap old when the caution flag flew for rain. Berry, like most of the other drivers in the field, made a pit stop and the DEX Imaging crew replaced his slick tires with a set of treaded rain tires.

He returned to the track for a run in the rain spent most of the first 20-lap Stage running inside the top 20 before ending that segment in 14th place. Berry continued to run in the top 20 for most of Stage Two before making a green-flag pit stop with 13 laps remaining in the Stage. The stop dropped him to 28th and that’s where he finished the Stage.

In the third and final segment of the race he worked his way into the top 10 during a round of green flag pit stops, then dropped to 25th when he made his stop. Berry was running 22nd on Lap 42 when Austin Dillon came to a stop ahead of him, blocking the track. Berry stopped to avoid a collision but the lost time dropped him to 30th in the running order with 27 laps to go.

He regained three of the lost spots before making his final pit stop with 16 laps remaining. He returned to the track in 30th place and gained four positions over the final laps to take the checkered flag in 26th place.

Berry and the team will return to action next week for the the Great American Getaway 400 at Pocono Raceway.

NASCAR’s Mexico City race: How a historic event overcame skepticism and delays | News, Sports, Jobs

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Despite the handful of industry insiders too scared to leave their hotels in Mexico City, NASCAR’s first international Cup Series race of the modern era was a cultural experience that brought new fans to the series and provided its competitors with a chance to enjoy a new country.

The event had its detractors — rumors persisted for months that it would be canceled over security concerns or the escalating tensions between the United States and Mexico — and some NASCAR team members remained critical all the way through Sunday’s race.

But was it a success? Even with travel delays, hotel room snafus and confusion over shuttle transportation, it was unequivocally a shining moment for NASCAR.

“Every single thing about this weekend exceeded my expectations,” said Daniel Suarez, the Monterrey-born NASCAR driver who was the face of the three-day weekend. “The people, the fans, the sponsors, the excitement, the energy. I had expectations for this weekend… and I can tell you that I personally exceeded those expectations.”

The idea to try the road course at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez — host of one of the most popular Formula 1 events on that calendar — was the brainchild of Ben Kennedy, executive vice president and chief venue and racing innovations officer. The great-grandson of NASCAR founder Bill France Sr. has been aggressive in shaking up a schedule that went to the same tracks on the same weekends for decades.

Bringing the Cup Series to Mexico City — only the third race outside the U.S. in 77 years — was a chance to expose stock car racing to a new demographic and give Mexican fans their first chance to see the series race live.

“This was a historic moment for our sport, for Mexico, and for the global motorsports community,” Kennedy said after Shane Van Gisbergen won Sunday’s race to lock the New Zealander into the playoffs.

“One of the coolest parts about this weekend was seeing the reaction of the fans. I had the opportunity to go into the stands a few times,” he continued, “the energy and the passion of the fans here is unmatched.”

Kennedy said 90% of those in attendance were from Mexico, with 44% from Mexico City. Most important, there were “a lot of new fans coming out of this weekend.”

Will NASCAR return?

Even so, Kennedy could not guarantee another race in Mexico City. FIFA has World Cup games scheduled for this same week next year and there are the logistical issues of finding a date during a packed 38-week schedule.

The cars had to leave Michigan International Speedway immediately after last week’s race to make the 40-hour journey across the border, and now must get to Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania in time for this weekend’s race.

“I want to go everywhere in the world — England, Germany, South America, Australia, every where we can go,” said Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon, the vice chairman at Hendrick Motorsports. “The next thing that makes sense in Canada. But we have to figure out the schedule before we do too much of this.

“We can’t do this. Michigan, Mexico City, back to Pocono, can’t happen. We’re doing it and we’re excited to take on the challenge, but it’s going to wear on us and I don’t think we can do it all back-to-back. So we’ve got to make some adjustments to the schedule and how do we fit it all in into what’s already a very difficult schedule.”

Where will NASCAR go next?

Nothing is off the table for Kennedy, who is globally exploring where NASCAR can race and showcase its product.

One glaring issue: Those in the industry who remain comfortable with the same old schedule of traveling to Bristol, Tennessee, and Martinsville, Virginia, and Darlington Raceway in South Carolina twice a year.

While those markets are tied deeply to NASCAR’s Southern roots, there isn’t room for growth in playing to the same crowds over and over. The pushback on Mexico City didn’t come from any high-profile drivers, but Ricky Stenhouse Jr.’s spotter had a scathing social media post ripping the city in which he said “screw this place, people can talk it up all they want” and 22-year-old driver Carson Hocevar had a similar sentiment in derisive comments on a live stream he has since walked back.

“Maybe a kid that had never been out of the country until Thursday should never give an opinion about what any place is like other than (hometown) Portage, Michigan,” Hocevar posted on social media. “I was skeptical about the trip and believed everything I read or heard about Mexico City from people who more than likely also had never been here.

“Now that I’ve actually left my hotel a couple times and raced here in front of some of the most passionate fans I’ve ever seen, my opinion has changed,” he continued. “I am embarrassed by my comments.”

A cultural field trip

This was baffling to some of the more well-traveled drivers, including Kyle Larson, who has raced at 200-plus different tracks around the world and makes annual trips to Australia and New Zealand. He also attended the 2021 Formula 1 season finale in Abu Dhabi and then vacationed in Dubai.

He likened Mexico City to a field trip for NASCAR because the drivers all stayed in the same hotels and rode buses together to the circuit each day. On a normal weekend, they are holed up in their motorhomes at the track and rarely venture out.

“It’s honestly really fun and enjoyable to be around your competitors and get to know each other a bit better because on a typical weekend, we just kind of lock ourselves in wherever we’re at,” he said. “We don’t talk to anybody or anything. So it’s nice that, yeah, you’re almost forced to hang out with each other. It’s cool. You get to know them, so I’ve enjoyed that.”

Even Kyle Busch, who was arrested in Mexico in 2023 for carrying a concealed weapon, was surprised by the few who had a negative response to racing in Mexico City.

“The food is amazing, the city has some of the top restaurants in the world,” Busch said. “This is a great place to be and I don’t understand the people holed up in their hotels too scared to leave. Live a little.”
