Each academic year, the Benedictine Men’s Soccer program names a recipient of the Dr. Richard Wittmann Award. This year’s recipient is senior Benjamin Houlihan.
The award is named after one of the founding fathers of Benedictine Soccer. Dr. Wittmann. Wittmann served as the first men’s soccer club coach from 1959-1962 before the program became an intercollegiate sport in 1963.
Houlihan, a defender and Mechanical Engineering major, will graduate on Saturday and plans to attend the Seminary after graduation. He has earned this year’s Wittmann Award based on criteria established by the men’s soccer program, encompassing the program’s and Benedictine’s core values.
“Ben has showcased tremendous growth with his time on the Men’s Soccer program,” said head coach John Sosa. “Ben joined as a walk-on player in his junior year after focusing on his academics his first two years at Benedictine.
Through hard work and perseverance, Ben worked his way up the roster. He managed to become an important defender on the field for the program, starting a total of 14 games.
“Whenever Ben steps on the field, he gives his utmost best effort and always puts the team first,” Coach Sosa said. “Ben has been a great example for his teammates, showing that hard work, dedication, and a positive attitude can lead to huge growth and results.”
Houlihan has maintained above a 3.0 GPA while balancing engineering, soccer, a strong faith life, and an active social life on campus. Ben always has a smile on his face and is brings others up with his positivity and humor. Each person on the team will tell you that Ben is a wonderful person to be around and has had a positive impact on everyone he meets. Ben exemplifies what it means to be a Benedictine College Men’s Soccer player.

TROY, NY – Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and C. Lloyd Bauer ’55 Endowed Men’s Varsity Ice Hockey Coach Eric Lang have announced that Cory Schneider will be joining the RPI bench as an assistant coach ahead of the 2025-26 season.

This Charlotte high school graduate is going to college after facing a devastating loss
Caleb Scull said he had a lot of support from his community, including his mentor in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An 18-year-old Charlotte football player will be the first in his family to go to college, but almost no one from his family was at his high school graduation.
Instead, the community that had helped raise him was there, including his mentor from Big Brothers Big Sisters.
This is a story that will both break your heart, but then put it back together. It’s a story of an unlikely pairing that ended up being more than either could ever have imagined.
When it comes to milestones, graduation day is a pretty big one. For Caleb Scull, it’s as big as it gets.
“I’m the first person in my family to go to college, and I want to be the first person to finish college,” he said. “It’s a big achievement, and I know my grandmother and my mother would be proud of me.”
The 18-year-old Butler High School football player hasn’t had an easy road. But there’s been one constant in his life since he was 6 years old: His Big Brother in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program Hane Tarris.
“I’ll never forget the day when he was 10 years old, and I walked into the church to see him standing over his mom’s casket, and to see that again a few weeks ago with his grandmother,” Tarris said. “It’s gut-wrenching for Caleb who’s had a tough go at life, but still remains so positive and humble. It’s tough to see, and that’s why we’re here to help him.”
“Hane is one of the best people to ever come through my life,” Scull said. “I’m so glad me and him have a strong bond still strong today,” Scull said. “It’s been 10 years, I’m just super proud and excited to call him my Big Brother, my mentor, and the person that’s been here for me the longest.”
Tarris has been there for every milestone: teaching Scull to drive, attending college visits and big games, and helping him apply to college and for scholarships. His family embraces Scull. Even Hane’s company, Bank of America, has chipped in along the way, helping to support Scull.
Aside from Tarris, the teen is pretty much on his own. His dad was never in the picture, he lost his mom when he was just 10 years old, and his grandparents were raising him until his grandmother passed away unexpectedly in March. Caleb says he is grateful he was able to tell his grandma he’d been accepted to Greensboro College – and will play football there – just days before she died.
“It was really exciting to know,” Scull said. “It was something we’d talked about for awhile and her knowing me stressing about if I was even going because there was a time I didn’t think I was going to, and now that I’m blessed with the opportunity to go to college — it’s a major blessing to know she’s looking down on me proud of me and my mom.”
But he doesn’t know how he’ll pay for everything. He has some academic scholarships and loans, but they don’t cover everything. He’s working two jobs all summer to make a dent.
“I am nervous to be on my own, but at the same time, I’m excited to spread my wings and do things by myself,” Scull said.
And Tarris isn’t going anywhere – the two are already getting ready for move-in day at college.
“It’s a blessing to have him still and my life, and it’s a blessing knowing he won’t go anywhere, he won’t just leave out of my life cause I need him,” Scull said.
Tarris has set up a GoFundMe to help Scull with tuition and expenses. If you’d like to help, click here.
