WASHINGTON (AP) — Meta has cut a 20-year deal to secure nuclear power to help meet surging demand for artificial intelligence and other computing needs at Facebook’s parent company.

The investment with Meta will also expand the output of a Constellation Energy Illinois nuclear plant.

The agreement announced Tuesday is just the latest in a string of tech-nuclear partnerships as the use of AI expands. Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.

Constellation’s Clinton Clean Energy Center was actually slated to close in 2017 after years of financial losses but was saved by legislation in Illinois establishing a zero-emission credit program to support the plant into 2027. The agreement deal takes effect in June of 2027, when the state’s taxpayer funded zero-emission credit program expires.

With the arrival of Meta, Clinton’s clean energy output will expand by 30 megawatts, preserve 1,100 local jobs and bring in $13.5 million in annual tax revenue, according to the companies.

“Securing clean, reliable energy is necessary to continue advancing our AI ambitions,” said Urvi Parekh, Meta’s head of global energy.

Xiaomi Smart Band 10

The Xiaomi Smart Band 10 doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it makes meaningful upgrades where it counts, including added training tools and a slightly larger display. For budget-conscious buyers who want reliable tracking, a polished aesthetic, and up to 21 days of battery life, it’s a no-brainer.

I’ve long tipped my hat to Xiaomi’s Smart Band line (a.k.a. Mi Band in some regions), which nearly always punches above its weight. The latest device, the Xiaomi Smart Band 10, continues the reign as a leader in the budget fitness tracker space. The latest model also doubles down on style, adding polish to performance, and nudges the band even further into smartwatch-lite territory, all without messing with its core formula or pushing up the price tag. It’s not a revolutionary update, but with a global price tag of $49, it has definitely left me wondering about the exorbitant prices of other popular devices.

A familiar look with welcome refinement

Affordability doesn’t translate to a cheap aesthetic. Instead, the Smart Band lineup features a consistent design language: unobtrusive build, pill-shaped tracker, colorful display. This year, Xiaomi upgrades the experience with a noticeable display bump, measuring in at 1.72 inches, thanks to trimmed bezels that are now symmetrical all the way around the AMOLED screen. It’s sharp (326 PPI), bright (up to 1,500 nits), and as attractive as many of my top smartwatch displays. I found it big enough to read notifications at a glance and clue into my workout stats, but not so large that it loses its identity as a band-style tracker (rather than a watch).

One of the quickest ways to personalize any wearable is with a watch face, and here Xiaomi delivers more than 200 options ranging from classic to downright fun. I couldn’t love the dynamic Pet series more, as represented by the adorable otter trying to burst out of the screen in the image above. For the childish among us (me), the display is also the perfect size to dive into simple but fun mini-games built into some of the brand’s newest picks. I got a shameful amount of entertainment out of the Fighter watch face that lets you test the strength of your punch, like some kind of virtual carnival game.

Between the excessive watch face designs, the metal and ceramic frame options, and eleven different band styles, including a pearl-chain pendant, it’s also clear Xiaomi is all-in on the fashion-forward fitness tracking angle. I tested the white ceramic build and found it very sleek. It also rinsed off easily after a dusty trail run, which eased my fears about white holding up. I also really like the alternative magnetic band Xiaomi sent me, with subtle texture, elevated metal lugs, and a very comfortable fit.

The Xiaomi Smart Band 10 leans into the fashion-forward angle, with a ceramic option and a wide range of band materials.

The included fluororubber band is comfortable as well, but lining up the pin and hole closure isn’t seamless one-handed and it’s more sporty than upscale. There are plenty of other new band styles as well, ranging from leather to a pastel colorblocked one that’s giving Eras Tour, and a chain necklace for wearing the tracker around your neck. I’ve yet to get behind the necklace form-factor, and the product imagery reminds me of Hermione Granger’s Time-Turner, but the concept is unique for anyone who prefers a naked wrist (scandalous).

As I’ve come to expect from this lineup, the Smart Band outperforms its price point. I can’t say there are a surprising number of fitness features, because the company consistently delivers a robust suite, but it’s still impressive year after year. In addition to basic activity tracking, the Smart Band 10 supports over 150 workout modes (matching the 9 Pro), with auto-detection for six, plus on-wrist running courses (or walking) which offer real-time pace and effort feedback.

The Xiaomi Smart Band 10 builds on the success of its predecessors with even more workout modes, plus enhanced training tools.

They’re not Garmin-level guided sessions, but they’re helpful for casual runners who want a bit more structure, and the Advanced Interval Run got me plenty sweaty. Meanwhile, metrics like VO₂ max, recovery time, and training state help contextualize users’ activity and fitness. For those who prefer clocking water-based laps rather than track ones, swim tracking received a notable upgrade with Xiaomi claiming up to 96% lap count accuracy.

For the first time, the tracker also offers heart rate broadcasting. I paired mine with a compatible cycling app, and it transmitted my live heart rate just like a chest strap would. That’s niche, perhaps, but useful for anyone training with intensity zones who’s already invested in using a favorite app or piece of exercise equipment. To that end, heart rate tracking on the Xiaomi Band 10 is decent, especially for such an affordable device. I tested the device against the Polar H10 chest strap, and it kept up fairly well, recording nearly identical average heart rates and staying within 5-8 beats (plenty good enough for basic activity tracking).

However, when I worked out with the magnetic band, the fit wasn’t as tight, and accuracy did seem to falter as a result. As you can see in the map above, there were a few times the Smart Band struggled to keep up with my chest strap, especially at peaks in my interval workout.

Unfortunately, we’re still left without built-in GPS.

Unfortunately, there’s still no onboard GPS tracking on the device, which holds it back compared to something like the Fitbit Charge line. Despite my hopes and dreams, Xiaomi seems to be saving outdoor workout tracking for its Pro models, so runners and cyclists might want to peek at the 10’s siblings before committing. Serious athletes aren’t likely to shop this device anyway, but built-in GPS would make it a more powerful option. With that said, it’s also roughly a third of the cost of Fitbit’s Charge 6, and leaving off GPS may be one way it retains such an approachable price tag.

The Smart Band 10 packs in a thoughtful mix of features that, once again, make it feel more capable than its price tag might suggest. It offers all the basic tools I’d want on my wrist including alarms, calendar, weather, timers, and a flashlight, plus music and camera controls.  It works with both Android phones and iPhones via the Mi Fitness app. On my Pixel 9, syncing was fast and reliable, but the experience is best if you’re already in the Xiaomi ecosystem. With support for the Xiaomi Smart Hub, you can use the band to control compatible smart home devices right from your wrist.

With the exception of NFC support, the Xiaomi Smart Band 10 offers a good range of basic smart features.

Even outside the Xiaomi bubble, though, the device still delivers a polished experience. Notifications, calls, and calendar alerts land instantly, and wrist-based music controls are helpful during a workout or grocery run. When I didn’t want distractions, I used the silent mode toggle and custom vibration patterns. My personal favorite is the “Good Day” alarm option, because who doesn’t want to start with a good day? I had hoped this would be the year NFC support finally made its way to the global model, but no luck. The longer digital payments exist and gain popularity, the more of a knock it seems for a device to not have it available.

What I absolutely love about the Xiaomi Smart Band line is the battery life. Compared to my usual go-to devices, the extended use between charges feels like a luxury. Despite the larger, brighter display and added features, the Smart Band 10 still offers up to 21 days on a typical charge, or about 9 days with the Always-on Display enabled. Charging is quick too, thanks to the magnetic charger that tops off the 233mAh battery in under an hour. Battery longevity has always been a Mi Band hallmark, and Xiaomi clearly isn’t ready to compromise on that front.

While the Smart Band 10 isn’t a dramatic leap forward, it continues to refine what Xiaomi already does well, offering a more polished take on a familiar formula. At roughly $50, it is a very impressive little tracker. But, should you buy one? If you’re coming from a Mi Band 7 or earlier, the answer is a confident yes. You’ll get a more premium display, smarter health data, and a real boost in design and versatility. For existing Mi Band 9 users, it depends. If you care about heart rate broadcasting and swim tracking, it might be worth the upgrade.

For everyone else, especially first-time wearable buyers, the Xiaomi Smart Band 10 is easily the best budget fitness band available. It doesn’t try to be a full-blown smartwatch, but it nails the basics with style and longevity that even pricier options struggle to match.

Riot Games has announced that it will begin officially sanctioning sports-betting sponsorships for esports teams in its Tier 1 League of Legends and Valorant leagues. While the company states that it still won’t allow advertisements in its official broadcasts, teams themselves will be able to take money from sports-betting companies for advertising through their own channels.

In a blog post, President of Publishing and Esports John Needham writes that the move is designed to take advantage of the rapidly growing sports-betting industry and to make esports-related betting more regulated. Seemingly to address concerns and head off potential criticism, Needham explains that the company is authorizing sports-betting sponsorships under a “guardrails first” strategy.

These “guardrails,” Needham states, are essentially the rules by which any sponsorship must be executed. First, sports-betting companies need to be vetted and approved by Riot itself, although the company has not shared the criteria on which this vetting is done. Second, to ensure that sports-betting companies are on a level playing field, Riot is mandating that official partners all use GRID, the officially sanctioned data platform for League of Legends and Valorant. Third, esports teams must launch and maintain internal integrity programs to protect against violations of league rules due to the influence of sports betting. Fourth and last, Riot will use some of the revenue from these sponsorships to support its Tier 2 (lower division) esports leagues.

One of the biggest sources of anxiety and frustration around the explosion of sports betting in the United States has been the increasingly high frequency of sports-betting advertising, and Riot addresses this concern by promising to not have ads from these companies in “Riot-owned broadcast and social channels.” This also means that teams will not be allowed to have sports-betting ads on team member jerseys. The only place these ads will be able to run are on team-owned channels. As Needham explains, “It will be up to each team to craft how sports-betting-related content shows up on their channels within the guidelines of the sponsorship program, content platform ToS [terms of service], and local regulations.”

The company’s justification for authorizing sports-betting sponsorships appears to center on a desire to address underground, unofficial, or otherwise unauthorized betting networks and organizations. “Sports betting–and more specifically, esports betting–is a space that more fans choose to engage with every year,” Needham writes. “According to Sportradar, the total betting turnover globally involving just LoL Esports and VCT reached $10.7 billion in 2024. But here’s the problem: 70% of bets across all sports are placed in unregulated markets with bookmakers who aren’t licensed.”

As such, the company hopes that it can bring more of this activity under the auspices of the company, where it hopes to exert some regulatory influence (and, one would suspect, be able to collect more of the revenue that flows through sports-betting apps).

Despite the blog post’s efforts to emphasize protecting esports integrity, though, Needham and Riot have not addressed any of the social issues that have been caused by the growth of sports betting throughout the country. An NCAA-sponsored study, for example, found that increasing harassment of college athletes in the United States can be primarily attributed to anger and disappointment related to sports betting. This dynamic may be even worse along gendered lines; some evidence suggests that betting-related harassment disproportionately targets women. Riot has yet to state if it will take any particular precautions to mitigate potential harms caused by sports betting; most of its emphasis so far appears to be assuaging fears about match fixing or other threats to esports integrity.

At the ATN Innovation Summit, Geisler spoke about the future of Sequel Brands. But he also spoke about what he views as an even more important cause: making fitness a bigger part of American life

Anthony Geisler has big plans for Sequel Brands, his newly launched boutique fitness franchising company. But he also has big plans for the fitness industry as a whole – and the entire United States. 

Geisler took the stage at the ATN Innovation Summit 2025 this month, delivering one of the event’s keynote speeches. During the speech, Geisler shed light on the formation of Sequel while outlining his plans for the new company. He also called upon fitness industry leaders to set aside their personal political beliefs and come together to make “movement” a bigger part of American life, even if that means wading into the murky world of politics. 

On the Birth of Sequel Brands

Last month, Geisler officially launched Sequel Brands to much fanfare.

A DJ in high school, Geisler shared that he almost named the company “Aftermath” in homage to Dr. Dre’s record label and 1996 album. Ultimately, he and his team decided on Sequel Brands, a somewhat subtle nod to the fact that this is Geisler’s second major boutique fitness franchising brand after Xponential Fitness. 

“We started to build this company, Sequel, about a year ago, really, to kind of culminate everything done in fitness,” Geisler said. “But this time, we wanted to do something bigger, we wanted to do something more innovative and we wanted to actually go lead the industry.” 

Sequel launched with four boutique fitness brands under its umbrella: Pilates Addiction, iFlex Stretch Studios (assisted stretching) Beem Light Sauna (infrared sauna and red light therapy) and Body20 (EMS fitness). A fifth brand is coming soon, Geisler shared. 

In the future, Sequel’s portfolio could become even bigger than that. 

“I don’t know if we’ll stop at five – we’ll see,” Geisler said, hinting at bigger expansion plans for Sequel.

On the Fitness Industry’s Movement Opportunity

The first half of Geisler’s keynote was dedicated to Sequel. The second half was dedicated to what he views as an even more important cause: making fitness a bigger part of American life, and in turn, improving the lives of millions of people, especially children.

Geisler pointed to the critical role movement plays in general health and disease prevention. Despite this fact, he noted that fitness is still treated as an “afterthought” in government conversations around how to “Make America Healthy Again.”

Geisler shared that he’s working with U.S. government officials to create a “fitness commission” that aligns with the “Make America Healthy Again Movement,” or as he calls it, the “Make America Move Again” initiative. While the MAHA movement is a touchy subject for many, the Sequel Brands founder urged audience members to put their political beliefs aside and embrace his mission. 

“Five years ago, literally, our entire industry was illegal,” Geisler said, pointing to the “prohibition of fitness” as gyms and studios were locked down during COVID. 

He said his goal to get the fitness industry a bigger seat at the table in Washington, D.C., will stand true no matter who’s in office.

Why Boutique Fitness Might Be The Key To Unlocking Movement

While Geisler noted that getting Americans to move more is a complex societal, cultural (and yes, political) issue, he believes the fitness industry has an important role to play. 

“We need options – one size doesn’t fit all,” he said. “A lot of this is just about getting off the couch. And that’s what I like (about) what we’re doing at Sequel, what everybody is doing in boutique fitness. Whether it’s an EMS suit, whether you want to go do Pilates, whether it’s yoga … it’s about removing excuses and getting people different entry points into movement.” 

“A lot of people don’t know how to work out … and then it’s the execution of actually doing it,” he added. “That’s why personal training is great, because they teach you how to do it, and then they make you show up at noon.”

Boutique fitness can serve as a more accessible way to get people into daily movement and exercise, Geisler argued, since group fitness classes cost less than hiring a personal trainer. 

“Boutique fitness is great because you do get that education, and you do have to show up at noon, but it’s technically less expensive than actually having a personal trainer five days a week or seven days a week, however often you work out,” he said.

Some of the bill’s opponents pointed to Canada, where Meta simply throttled news content after the government adopted a similar requirement.

SALEM, Ore. — A bill that some lawmakers hoped would help preserve local journalism by charging tech companies for content narrowly failed to pass in Salem, as other potential supporters warned it would be a poison pill for a media outlets already on the ropes.

Under Senate Bill 686, social media companies would have to enter into an agreement with news outlets and pay for the content shared on news feeds, for example. The precise amount would have been up to the news outlets and the tech companies to negotiate.

Several senators who supported the bill said they wanted to reverse the long-term decline of local news.

“Journalism is an important way to hold all of us accountable and to connect us together,” said Sen. Sara Gelser Blouin, a Democrat from Corvallis. “It is so much more valuable to me to read from a high-quality journalist that has written an article from an objective perspective that has taken on evidence and records than it is for me to just read a press release.”

But other lawmakers warned that the bill could hurt the very news outlets it seeks to protect, as tech companies like Meta have threatened to simply block Oregon news content on their sites. And it’s not an idle threat — they’ve done it before.

“Does anybody honestly believe these companies are going to just write the check and keep doing business as usual here?” said Sen. Mark Meek, a Democrat from Oregon City. “No. They will stop sharing news content in Oregon altogether, just like they did in Canada. This bill is not a new revenue strategy; it’s a geofence that cuts off Oregonians from the news.”

In Canada, many news outlets still have Facebook pages, and some of them continue to post regularly. But their reach is throttled, essentially limited to direct visitors to their pages. Meta has refused to play ball on paying for content, and that’s been a net negative for outlets that relied on the extra eyeballs for traffic.

When it came to a vote on SB 686 in the Senate, it looked as if the bill were headed for a 14-14 tie. But then, Sen. Kayse Jama, a Democrat from Damascus, decided to change his ‘yes’ vote to a ‘no’ vote, causing the measure to fail.
