What happened on a 350 km solo road trip in a VW Polo GT TSI on a rainy day changed my opinion of the car.

BHPian mandavamanojjr recently shared this with other enthusiasts:

I always felt that German cars are expensive to maintain, though I listened to reviews that say they offer great driving pleasure, I did not show much interest in them.

While I was auditing our client’s accounts, I happened to see that a total of Rs. 1 Lakh plus was paid towards the repair of the DSG gearbox for a Polo GT TSI.

It was a complete shock for me, as I had never seen that much repair amount for a car back then.

This was strongly registered in my mind.

In 2015, when we were looking to purchase a sedan, though I was originally fascinated by the Volkswagen Vento, I did not even attempt to test drive it, being under the illusion that the maintenance would be higher.

Further, in 2016, I travelled with one of my uncles in his Polo TDI, sitting in the front passenger seat. My first impression was that the car was too compact with no space at all, summarizing that it was not a proper family car.

But, I still remember that drive along with my uncle, where he was constantly cruising at 100-120 kmph, and the car was rock solidly stable with no sort of vibrations.

It had a low stance and seating position, which felt like it was completely glued to the road, and it gave me a feeling of sitting in a go-kart vehicle.

The car was picking up speed at a good pace, and it was very planted with no sort of vibrations, air & tyre sounds. It was like riding in a superior car.

Years passed

One of my friends had purchased a Polo GT TSI recently, a used car, and I wondered why he was buying it, thinking of the maintenance it requires.

I drove it a couple of times for a very short spin within the town, and my original impressions continued of being cramped with no space, no creature comforts etc.

After a few days, I got an opportunity to travel for about 350 km solo in his Polo. Though I initially felt it was not an opportunity but a necessity.

It was a rainy day, and I started my journey, which completely changed my opinion of the car.

The following are the three driving chapters that I have experienced that made me completely fall in love with the car.

First chapter

I was driving on the single-lane village roads beside farms before getting onto the highway. It was rainy and in some spots on the road, the water was clogged.

Usually, while driving, I prefer not to drive in the water as I have the impression that the car loses its control and stability.

That particular day, since I was solo and bored, an instant thought came into my mind to just splash the water aside by going through it as there were no people beside, and I was also driving slowly.

In my first attempt, I made the left side of the car (the left front and rear tyres) go into the water to splash and kept the right side of the car on the tarmac. Apart from visualizing the splashing of the water, I immediately realized how stable the car was despite being thrown into a considerable water pit. The car did not shake even a little bit, and it was very much in control.

I was fascinated by the way it drove and handled the water pit.

I was still in a dilemma, doubting the capability of the car, presuming that the first pit might be very small, and thus, like any other car, the Polo also performed well. To test my perception of the car, I once again made the car go into the water pit, which is slightly bigger this time.

This time, no words, no thoughts inside my mind, but just a natural smile came on my face.

I completely agreed with the capabilities of the car and never doubted it again.

Now, a younger version of me has been awoken, who wants to experience the same joy of splashing the water again and again, as the car can handle it with utmost confidence.

I repeated it for the next few water pits, and it was a thorough joy, which totally satisfied the inner soul in my heart, who has a true passion towards cars.

I wish that day I had more water pits to have more fun.

The fun, though initially expected from the splashing of the water, has come, but the real and true fun part is driving the Polo through the water.

The fun and joy came to an end as the road ended, and I had to take the highway.

Second chapter

After a few kilometres of highway driving, I was supposed to drive through a city in between, and was slowly moving with the city traffic.

I approached a small junction which is neither big enough to have a traffic signal nor small enough to be left without a policeman. It is just in between.

It is a four-lane road with a divider in between, and I was driving in the left lane on my side of the road. The vehicles that need to take a turn are driving on the right lane on my side.

All of a sudden, the vehicle in front of me stopped due to some forward traffic in our lane, and immediately, I looked to my right, checking for any vehicles beside me. Next, I checked the right side rear view mirror for any vehicle behind me in the right lane.

After having a proper clearance check, I immediately turned towards the right, changed my lane, and overtook the vehicle in front of me in the left lane.

Though this might appear to take a lot of time in action, in reality, it was so quick as it is a 2-5 second decision & execution process, and what was even quicker & faster is the way the car turned its direction towards the steering input.

I was just astonished as the directional change was so smooth and easy, and by the time I was overtaking the vehicle in the left lane, I started to realize and appreciate its agility.

Every car turns quickly, no wonder in it.

But it is the precision with which it turns that matters.

I have driven many cars and handled many traffic situations as described above, but I had never gotten this feeling, and I had never remembered these many days, the way Polo changed its lane that day, which is still unforgettable.

Third chapter

Finally, I reached the outskirts of the destination and was travelling on the Outer Ring Road (ORR). There were some expansion joints and rumble strips in between on the ORR to slow down the fast-moving vehicles.

It was almost 6 hours of driving to ORR. I was a bit tired, and my focus then was only reaching the destination quickly. As part of the usual driving, I slowed down a bit when the expansion joint came and drove across it.

A few kilometers later, another expansion joint came suddenly, which I initially missed to slow down the vehicle, and I approached it with the same speed I was cruising. I was expecting that there would be a considerable movement and unsettledness after gliding through it.

To my surprise, there was no movement at all, either upwards or sideways, and it was the same planted drive making me feel as if the car had not gone through any expansion joint.

Now, I waited for another expansion joint, and I consciously did not decrease the speed and went through it. The same planted feeling repeated with no sort of loss of confidence. From then I was waiting for the expansion joints where all other cars were pressing their brake pedals, for which stop lights were visible at the rear, whereas I cruised through the expansion joints at the same pace with so ease and enthusiasm.

I felt like the VIP on the road with escort vehicles following, as all others were slowing down at these expansion joints, which was not a slowing point for me. The Polo made me feel like the boss of the road.

The same is the case with the rumble strips, where the car felt utmost composed, and nothing was felt inside.

Conclusion: The love realised after the drive

All three chapters mentioned above, though, were experienced while driving; the real love started only after returning the car to my friend.

I went home, had dinner, and was in bed to sleep. Then, these feelings mentioned in the chapters above started to run through my heart, coupled with the experiences picturing in my mind. The real love started then, and the real potential of the Polo was understood then.

This nostalgia continues to date.

I felt that the real fun is not in driving the car at higher speeds, but it is in understanding the true potential of the car and experiencing its abilities. At present, whenever I see a Polo on the roads, I feel jealous of the driver for the reason that he has a good-handling car.

Even today, I feel it’s a high-maintenance car, as my friend also spent a considerable amount on repairs, but if he were the first owner who had taken care of the car very well, then the maintenance cost would be nominal.

Being a lover of the Polo, did I purchase it later? Or just lived through the dreams of purchasing it. A story that will be shared in the future.

In the other highlighted match, in Group A, Spain left no chance for the Hungarians and secured the top spot and the quarter-final berth. Greece are also on their way to the quarters and to clinching first place in their group.

In the first big match of the tournament, Greece overturned a four-goal deficit to beat Italy in a thrilling match. The Italians staged a pretty strong start, shutting out the Greeks for the entire first period while taking a 0-2 lead and added more to lead 1-5 three minutes into the second period.

What came next was the Rafaela Saltamanika show. The Greek captain hit three before half-time to lift her team and they managed to pull it back to 6-6 at the turnaround.

In the third, it was Saltamanika again who scored a stunning hat-trick after 7-7, while the Italians remained scoreless for four and a half minutes and that ultimately cost them the game.

Once down by three, their comeback attempts were halted by the Greeks right away, who sailed to a fine win, with Saltamanika finishing the match with an impressive seven-goal haul.

In the other Group B game, Germany stunned Croatia. It was a toe-to-toe battle until half-time when the Germans led 4-3, then they staged a 3-0 rush in the third which proved decisive.

The Croats managed to pull one back before the last break and another one early in the fourth, but the next four and half minutes were devoted to battling, and it was still 7-5 to Germany.

Mare Jankovic then hit one from action for 7-6, but before the Croats could have any thoughts of equalising, Bianca Mitterbauer put away an extra just 33 seconds later with 1:25 remaining, which not just halted the Germans’ seven minute-long scoreless run, but also closed down the contest.

In Group A, Spain took the upper-hand early on in their clash with Hungary. They stormed to a 6-3 lead and never looked back. Ona Jurado led the charge, hitting five of Spain’s first seven goals, while the Magyars couldn’t really outplay the Spanish defence – they missed three six on fives in a row late in the second, at 7-4, so no wonder they trailed 8-4 at half-time.

Soon, the Spanish killed the party with another 4-0 run – indeed, after thrashing the Dutch 20-6 on day one and now beating Hungary by eight goals, it was a pretty strong message about their title ambitions.

Elsewhere, Netherlands blew away the Serbs, as a 6-1 opening period put the match on its expected path and the Dutch eventually stopped their relentless barrage at 22.

Türkiye fought back from 4-8 down to beat Czechia. Photo: Nikola Krstic/European Aquatics

As for the second division matches, Malta and Ukraine produced a really exciting encounter where the Ukrainians seemed to have the edge as they went 9-12 up midway through the last period.

However, the Maltese players hit back with a whirlwind-like rush, hitting three in just 44 seconds to level it up at 12-12 with 2:51 on the clock.

The decision came in the six on fives, as Ukraine missed their last two, while Nevise Agius netted the winner for Malta 28 seconds from time.

France had no headaches and thrashed Slovakia 20-8, while hosts Türkiye played out an epic end-to-end contest with Czechia that was full of twists and turns.

The hosts led 4-3 after the opening eight minutes, but in the second quarter the momentum was firmly with the Czechs as they staged a 0-5 surge to take control of the contest and led 4-8 at half-time.

Türkiye ended their 10-minute scoring drought early in the third through Gunes Pektas, then Eda Moroglu added another shortly after for 6-8.

Now, it was Czechia’s turn to struggle to score, and Türkiye stepped up another gear in the fourth to win the final quarter 3-0 and the game 10-9.

Defne Keremoglu completed Türkiye’s comeback in dramatic fashion, firing in the winner from outside 6m with just 14 seconds remaining, much to the delight of the large crowd inside the Istanbul arena.

The championship of the 16 Club division in the AAU Junior National Volleyball Championships went to a Fort Wayne outfit, Empowered Volleyball Academy, on Tuesday.

Empowered 16 Elite Black went undefeated in the tournament, finishing 13-0, and beat Illini Elite, which was also unbeaten entering the match, 27-25, 25-19 to capture the title.

The tournament was held in Orlando, Florida, at the Orange County Convention Center and was the 52nd annual iteration of what has become the world’s largest volleyball tournament, with more than 6,500 teams competing.

The victorious Empowered team was coached by Natasha Nestleroad, whose staff of assistants included former Carroll volleyball standout Kassandra Till.

On the roster were several players who have already made their mark on the local high school volleyball scene, including Darcy Ritchie, from West Noble, who was a high honorable mention selection on The Journal Gazette’s All-Northeast Indiana team, and Amelia Kesterke of Lakewood Park Christian who was an honorable mention pick.

Empowered finished first in a division that featured 159 entrants. The team played all 13 of its matches over a four-day span, including four matches each Monday and Tuesday. It lost just one set Tuesday on the way to the title.

The group from the Summit City prevailed in tightly contested clashes with EVA 16 Blue (24-26, 25-21, 18-16), VAQUERAS 16F Mario (25-18, 22-25, 21-19), and River City Jrs 16 Navy (23-25, 25-23, 15-11).

Hudson Lake affected by dredging project

Public access to Hudson Lake may be disrupted beginning in early July through the fall due to a dredging project aimed at improving boating access.

The project, funded by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Lake and River Enhancement program and Hudson Lake Conservation Association, will hydraulically pump sediment from the access channel and a navigation channel between the lake’s east and west basins to an upland area on the northwest end of the lake.

This may result in temporary blockage or restrictions near these sites due to dredging equipment or piping on the lake.

The DNR advises lake users to plan accordingly and boat responsibly near any obstacles until the completion of the project.

JG calling for more outdoor experiences

Fishing and hunting are enjoyed by young and old, but those are not the only pastimes for residents of northeast Indiana. Bird watching, hiking, camping, and all manner of sports activities are done daily.

The Journal Gazette would like to showcase all manner of recreational activities on the weekly Recreation page.

The Journal Gazette’s Outdoors experience feature lends a forum for readers to share their love of all things outdoors, or indoors, with their neighbors.

If you have an outdoor experience you’d like to share, email your stories and photos to The Journal Gazette at jgsports@jg.net. Please provide full names, ages, hometowns, type of animal and when and where caught.

If Egypt is the new powerhouse of the HaBaWaBa movement, as demonstrated last Saturday by Sodic Sports Club’s double in the U9 and U11 categories, the Hungarian school is a timeless certainty: the U13 finals day of the HaBaWaBa International Festival PLUS 2025 turned into a stage of excellence for Magyar waterpolo. In both the women’s U13 tournament and the mixed team competition, in fact, the final challenges were entirely “made in Hungary”.

The final of the U13 girls’ tournament (11 teams participating) starring Szentes Starfish and OSC Girls from Budapest was exciting and balanced. The game, played point to point, ended in a draw (7-7) before being decided in an electrifying final chapter on shootouts. Thanks to saves by number 1 Emma Meszaros, it was Szentes Starfish who won the gold medal, ending the match on 11-10 score: it’s the first HaBaWaBa title for the club coming from South Hungary.

The U13 mixed-teams tournament had as many as 58 squads at the start, a marked increase from 51 teams registered in 2024. PSN Sharks – club from the city of Pecsi that won the U11 title at HaBaWaBa in 2019 – and Balaton VK from Balatonfuzfo were face to face in the final game. The two teams put on a superb technical and competitive match, leading the score by turns: a goal by the Sharks with 35’’ to go set the score at 6-6, sending the game to shootouts. At penalties phase, kids from Pecsi handled the tension better, winning overall 9-7 and clinching the second ever HaBaWaBa title for their club.

SEMIFINALS AND THIRD PLACE. In the morning semifinals of the U13 girls’ tournament, Starfish Szentes overcame the Swiss RZO U13D team 12-4, while OSC Girls won 8-3 over Entente 95 Filles from France. In the final for 3rd place RZO U13D defeated 7-3 Entente 95 Filles and took the lowest step on the podium.

In the U13 mixed teams’ tournament, the semifinals ended with Balaton’s narrow victory over Vasas (7-6) and PSN Sharks’ success over Rapallo Gialli (9-4). The final for 3rd place ended with Vasas’ victory over the Italian team (13-11).

FAIR PLAY. During the closing ceremony, the winning teams of the Fair Play Trophy will also be awarded: the trophy is assigned to the most correct teams in the two tournaments based on the scores given by the juries. In this edition, it was lifted by Universo Silvi – at its first ever participation in the U13 girls’ tournament – and Pescara Nuoto e Pallanuoto, in the mixed team competition.

SEE YOU IN 2026. HaBaWaBa 2025 has thus come to an end, in the last two weeksthe “game of the ball in water” brought together at the Bella Italia & EFA Village in Lignano Sabbiadoro 147 teams from 5 continents and 15 countries: Australia, Croatia, Egypt, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Montenegro, Palestine, Monaco, Singapore, Slovakia, Switzerland, Turkey, United States.

The event – supported by World Aquatics, European Aquatics, FIN, CONI and realised thanks to the help of sponsors Turbo, Compact Goals, Ossidabile and All Risks Consulenze Assicurative – proved once again to be a huge success, a true festival capable to create unforgettable memories in little athletes, coaches and fans, transforming waterpolo into a means of spreading the noblest values of sport.

HaBaWaBa will return to Lignano Sabbiadoro in the summer of 2026, but the HaBaWaBa movement will continue to gather in the coming months in the various stages of the HaBaWaBa International Circuit scattered around the world, from Brazil to Egypt, from Spain to South East Asia.
