If it’s May, that means it’s another year of ESPN raising its presentation of college softball and baseball to new heights. From tape delayed games of the past to exclusive live coverage of every single pitch of both the NCAA Division I Softball and Baseball Tournaments, our commitment to both sports has grown exponentially since the 1980’s. Our exclusive presentation of both championships includes support from countless departments that strategize together on new and exciting ways to showcase the teams and athletes throughout their postseason journeys.

Meg Aronowitz (SVP, Production), Mallory Kenny (Director, Programming & Acquisitions) and Phil Orlins (VP, Production Technology & Innovation) discuss how coverage of each sport has evolved in their time at ESPN and what they are most looking forward to as champions are crowned this June at the Women’s and Men’s College World Series.

How has ESPN’s on-site coverage evolved since your first year working on softball in 2006, and how are you approaching your first baseball postseason?
Aronowitz: My first year overseeing softball we had one truck up on the side of a hill that leaned and there was a crew of maybe 20 people. We were tape delayed for the early round games.

There was a time with college baseball where we did the entirety of Omaha and handed off the finals to CBS. Think of the volume of what we have in the regular season, plus every pitch of the postseason, which all leads up to the showcase that we put on in both Oklahoma City and Omaha.

It’s an event that not everybody can do. It’s a really special team that we have in both places that are really passionate about the sports. To be able to be part of the growth of the sport of softball, I’m honored. It’s probably the thing I’m proudest of in my career – to help cultivate the growth of this sport and I hope to continue to do that with the team on college baseball as well.

What are your biggest takeaways from your first season overseeing both softball and baseball, and how are you approaching the postseason?
Kenny: We are the leaders in the regular season for both baseball and softball thanks to our rights portfolio, so we are able to showcase the best that both of these sports have to offer. It’s cool to be able to tell the story from start to finish as we crown champions of both in June!

Both NCAA tournaments are huge puzzles beginning with our regional coverage. It’s a programmer’s dream to get to place those pieces and I’m excited to see how it plays out as the tournament continues. During regional rounds, our 7 Innings Live and Squeeze Play coverage is unmatched, and having a consistent home for both postseason tournaments in Oklahoma City and Omaha really adds to the specialness.

The last 10 years, we’ve elevated both sports across our platforms and our conference networks have absolutely helped in that effort. This year, both the Women’s College World Series and the Men’s College World Series will have windows on ABC and that just speaks to the belief we have in the postseason for these sports.

Why have the WCWS and MCWS been a proving ground for new innovations?
Orlins: Ten consecutive days of games in the same stadium makes both ideal locations to develop and workshop new technologies. Over the years, we have implemented live microphones on all umpires, which was an early and important enhancement that has withstood the test of time. UmpCam on the home plate umpire mask has advanced over the past five years and is a ubiquitous part of our MLB coverage in addition to the MCWS. The MCWS was one of the first ESPN events to aggressively use live drone coverage on every game and was also the first place we used C360 cameras, 4D replay featuring a 180-degree array of cameras and MindFly cameras on base umpire

ESPN’s exclusive presentation of the in Oklahoma City, Okla. begins on May 29, running through June 6. gets underway on Friday, May 30 and the Men’s College World Series from Omaha, Neb. begins Friday, June 13.

President Donald Trump says the United States will suspend trade negotiations with Canada after Canada implemented a digital services tax on U.S. based companies.

Trump wrote on social media that because Canada has chosen to implement a tax on U.S.-based digital services, the U.S. would be ending trade discussion.

“Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately. We will let Canada know the Tariff that the will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven day period.”

The 3% tax will apply to revenue that U.S. tech companies generate from Canadian users. It applies retroactively, meaning companies like Apple, Google and Netflix will owe Canada $2 billion for services already rendered through June.

A White House official told Scripps News the decision aligned with policies set out in a memorandum from President Trump on February 21.

“My Administration will not allow American companies and workers and American economic and national security interests to be compromised by one-sided, anti-competitive policies and practices of foreign governments. American businesses will no longer prop up failed foreign economies through extortive fines and taxes,” the memorandum reads.

Scripps News has reached out to the White House for further comment.

“Digital Services Taxes are designed to unfairly target U.S. tech companies — punishing American innovation and costing our economy and companies tens of billions,” Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick wrote. “Why do countries think they can attack our technology companies and then turn around and try to take advantage of our 30 Trillion dollar economy?”

Investing.com — Guggenheim raised its price target on Walt Disney (NYSE:DIS) Co to $140 from $120 on stronger-than-expected trends across sports advertising, theme parks, and progress on cost-cutting as the company pushes toward a more unified streaming strategy.

The brokerage maintained its Buy rating and now expects Disney’s segment operating income to reach $17.7 billion in fiscal 2024, slightly ahead of consensus at $17.65 billion.

That includes a lift in fiscal third-quarter operating income to $4.5 billion from a previous $4.4 billion forecast.

Guggenheim said its updated model reflects better profitability in Disney’s Linear Networks business after the Star India exit, higher-margin sports ad revenue during the seven-game NBA Finals, and more resilient park attendance and travel trends than previously forecast.

While recent films like Elio and Thunderbolts underperformed at the box office, the impact was partly offset by stronger expectations for the Lilo & Stitch remake.

Content licensing and theatrical revenue was trimmed, but Disney’s direct-to-consumer (DTC) earnings forecast was unchanged and remained above Wall Street estimates.

On the Sports side, the firm noted an increase in total viewership for the NBA Finals despite lower ratings per game. That pushed ad revenue estimates up, helping segment operating income reach $1 billion.

Theme park demand remained solid, with Guggenheim citing improving app engagement trends for both domestic and international parks.

Daily downloads declined less sharply in the U.S. and returned to growth overseas in the June quarter, according to the note.

Guggenheim said Disney’s full control of Hulu and the upcoming ESPN streaming launch set the stage for more aggressive bundling, positioning the company well to grow digital revenues amid a shift away from traditional TV.

The firm’s new price target is based on a 23.8x multiple of 2025 earnings, reflecting confidence in long-term growth in digital and parks operations.

Mountain bikers, listen up: Garmin recently launched its latest cycling computer specifically tailored for you. The Edge MTB is designed to meet the unique needs of off-road riders.

For context, the Edge MTB represents a departure from Garmin’s traditional one-size-fits-all approach to cycling computers. This device focuses pretty exclusively on mountain biking scenarios, incorporating specialized tracking modes and trail-specific functionality that road cyclists would never need.

Here’s how the Edge MTB works, and what sets it apart from other cycling computers.

Profiles for different riding styles

The computer introduces two distinct ride profiles designed for different mountain biking disciplines. The “enduro” profile recognizes that mountain biking involves both climbing and descending phases, allowing riders to track these segments independently. Users can manually switch between climb and descent tracking with a button press, or rely on the automatic pause feature to handle the transitions.

The “downhill” profile addresses a common frustration among gravity-focused riders: the need to constantly pause and resume recording when using chairlifts or shuttle services. (Huge for us dual Strava-Garmin users). This mode intelligently filters out uphill travel that isn’t pedaled, so that only actual descent time and statistics are recorded. This eliminates the tedious ritual of manually pausing the device every time riders board a lift or hop in a shuttle vehicle.

Better GPS for winding trails

Both specialized profiles utilize 5 Hz GPS recording, providing more frequent position updates than standard cycling computers. This higher sampling rate translates to improved accuracy when tracking the technical, winding paths typical of mountain bike trails.

The device also introduces virtual gates functionality, enabling riders to set checkpoint markers along trails to monitor split times across specific segments—useful for training or comparing performance on familiar routes.

What do you think so far?

Trail navigation features

The Edge MTB comes equipped with Forksight, which displays approaching trail names as riders navigate through trail networks. The device ships with preloaded Trailforks maps, giving users immediate access to trail information without requiring additional downloads or subscriptions.

Other features and specs

According to Garmin, the Edge MBT’s battery performance reaches 14 hours of standard operation, extending to 26 hours with battery saver mode. It has a scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass display and an IPX7 water resistance rating. Safety features include LiveTrack sharing and automatic incident detection.

The Edge MTB is available for $399.99, making it a mid-range option among Garmin’s cycling computer lineup. Mountain bikers are sure to appreciate a computer that does more than simply treat off-road cycling as simply road cycling in a different environment.
